Me and some friends have an online discussion group called "TARDIS in Westeros" where we discuss all things Doctor Who and A Song of Ice and Fire. This conversation fits perfectly! :D Was this a random interview or do You like Doctor Who too?

Jack Vance Question
Great interview! I have a question, which goes out either to George or to anyone who reads this blog.

I just finished Jack Vance's Dying Earth collections. It was stunning, written with such rich imagination, with characters who are written who are deceptively rich. And the prose! He has such a beautiful, even hypnotic cadence. It's like listening to Coltrane, where the rhythms are hidden for a while, but once you learn to hear them, they just make such sense. There are a lot of people who write what today is considered serious fiction who can't do what he can with language or with characters.

After the Dying Earth, where does one turn with Vance? I've actually found it tough to acquire other books, never mind knowing which to read in which order. Any hints? Or even a reliable website for Vance-related information?

(And yes, I know I will be able to turn to any good online retailer to find the books once I know which ones I need.)

Re: Jack Vance Question
Well, you can continue with the rest of the DYing Earth books... EYES OF THE OVERWORLD and CUGEL THE CLEVER are next.

(Then maybe sample my own tribute anthology, SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH).

There's so much more, though. Really, you can't go wrong with Vance.

Re: Jack Vance Question
Yeah, sorry, that's what I meant by "collection" - Tales of the Dying Earth includes all of those.

I will pick up your anthology, though. Better be good...

Re: Jack Vance Question
Try "Lyonesse". I seem to remember it not being as rich as "Tales of the Dying Earth", but it's still a damn fine book. I think the Fantasy Masterworks series collects the trilogy in one volume.

Re: Jack Vance Question
LYONESSE is great, but DYING EARTH is Vance's best, at least in fantasy.

In SF, there is the Demon Prince series... and so much more.

Re: Jack Vance Question
I've never tried those. I ought to.

I wish I could go to the BWB party now (I've never been to any of the cons). It'd be awesome to have someone to talk to about Jack Vance, since no-one I know has read anything by him. I figure you could use a break from ASOIAF talk, too.

Maybe next year.

That's sad.

Never met Kubert, as best I recall, but he was indeed one of the great ones. His HAWKMAN was a classic.

Doctor Who
Any chance you could ever write a Doctor Who or Torchwood episode?

Re: Doctor Who
A thousand times this. A Doctor Who episode wrote by Mr. Martin would be amazing! But only if the Doctor doesn't die... =p

And by the way, I was thrilled to watch this interview. Barrowman is a great interviewer and Mr. Martin is so pleasent, as usual. And it was awesome to get know that he is a long fan of comics and was at the SDCC right on the beginning. =)

Jajaja you'll kill more characters in the serie than in the book! Then, the 4th season will be nobody :P

The only thing that could kill Jack Harkness would be an episode written by GRRM.

Maybe that's how Captain Jack gets his head cut off and ultimately becomes the Face of Boe! :P

Do you intend to go to the french comic con, one day?
It takes place during 4 days at the end of June / beginning of July.

In the age of podcast, have you considered bringing yours back?
Heck, I'll even edit and post the day-gone thing.
I will however play awful music behind any liberal rantings:).

No, don't tempt me. Podcasting is fun. Writing is hard.

This was one of the rare interviews where I wanted to do some fankid squealing at BOTH people involved!

When you guys were discussing how you can't just walk around the con anymore, my mind immediately went to how Adam Savage of Mythbusters does his "Adam Incognito" thing every year at Comic-Con. Maybe he'll let you borrow his full-body costumes, haha. I think you could pull off his No-Face or Nazgûl. ;)

A death that benefits the story is to be commended
Remember: not a single death of a major character in ASOIAF did not, somehow, feed the story. It's commendable.

Thanks, but I visit my old neighborhood once a year or so. I still have family in Bayonne.

I hear they plan on raising (not razing, RAISING) the Bayonne Bridge. Sacrilege!

I've only been going to Dragon*Con for the last 7 years, so I know only of it being held on Labor Day weekend. When was it held previously?

Re: Walking around
It was originally in July.

Labor Day weekend has been the traditional worldcon weekend since the 1940s. When Dragoncon moved to that weekend, they broke a half-century of fannish tradition.

Re: Walking around
That's sad. I'm sure it must have upset many people who had been around from the beginning. Wish it had been different. I live in South Alabama so Dragon*Con is the nearest big time con for me to get to. I'll just have to plan on visiting another con to shake your hand one day. :)

This made me smile. Your bit about your turtles reminds me so of my son. He is 6 and very much wants a turtle, and his imagination is incredible. Also, I read the books to my husband and he would agree, that his favourite character and point of view is Tyrion. I love your blog. Thanks for posting.
