Mr Martin, I know this isnt the right place but I was wondering something about Asoiaf, a tiny question I hope you will have time to answer:

Dalla is older than Val right ? Val is the little sister ?

Monty Python?

[slightly, but only slightly, off-topic]

Do I see the faintest hint of a recurring Monty-Python referential gag?

"Hacking off some boy's stones with a butcher's cleaver and handing him a pointy hat don't make him Unsullied. That dragon queen's got the real item, the kind that don't break and run when you fart in their general direction..."

"We are fighting shrubbery, Asha thought as she slew a man who had more leaves on him than most of the surrounding trees..."

[...and others...]

I would love a Novella detailing the conflict between the First Men, and what remained of the Children of the Forest, and their conquest by the Andals. Especially the events in Nothern Westeroes in that conflict. How do the Starks hold on? (Being a direct line from the first men.) It my explain how some Children of the Forest escaped as well as the origin/reason of the Others if the people of that time knew.

Of course George, beware! This story may also grow in the telling :-)

Whatever you decide to write, we will quickly purchase and read.

Of the parts of the lore that I had no hope of ever seeing something in this fashion, my favorites are:

-Before EVERYTHING in westeros, like already said before: the first men, the Others invasion etc...

-The Doom of Valyria.

-Brandon Stark and the contruction of the Wall (this one intrigues me the most).

Just saying

In my idealized world, Old Valyria = Melnibone. (Heh.)

Great to hear
Keep up the good work, halfway through Dances with Dragons and loving every page of it!

If you had written
"real" history books, there'd be no end of enthusiasm for the subject.

Craving information
I am among the horde of your fans that are excited to hear that you are expanding the back-story and the world of Westeros.
My personal hope is that we get to learn the "words" for House Dondarrion.
Anyway...this post has me super excited!

You mean he'll never complete his Dothraki / Klingon dictionary?

That's unfortunate, as we have some pretty impatient Klingons in this neck of the multiverse.

turning into tolkein
You will have a host of appendices for your sidebars. You were named the American Tolkein.

I am eagerly anticipating the 50 Shades of Tyrion Novella myself.

I know you've resisted it thus far because you don't want to be held down by the answer but is there any chance we will get a map of Westeros (if not Essos) with a scale? Or will the world book reveal that the reason the maps in the book don't include one is that map makers in Westeros haven't figured out how to draw scale maps?
Aug. 24th, 2012 12:12 am (UTC)
I tried to avoid giving a scale so that obsessive fans with rulers would not be hectoring me all the time about long it took character x to get from A to B. (It takes as long as I said it takes, damn it).

But then I made the mistake of mentioning the Wall was a hundred leagues long, and someone looked up "league" in their dictionary.

Not sure the map book will have scales either. Why make it easy for 'em? It sure isn't easy for me...

Hello George, I really don't want to start some kind of trend of having people bug you with questions on here and make you regret answering that other fan's question, so feel free to ignore this if you wish. But I did think it was really kind of you to answer, and figured I'd take a stab at asking you something small and insignificant that I'd been wondering.

I was just curious how old Brienne is. Unlike most other characters, we don't have lots of info to go on, but I always assumed pretty young (20-ish)? Thanks so much. :D

Re: Question
Good stab. I may even have made her younger than that. I think her age is mentioned in there somewhere.

Benjen and Jon Snow
My dear George,
Please do not let Benjen be dead or Jon Snow for that matter. Leave me some decent characters pleeeeaaassseee! Some men of honor must live!

Books 4 and 5
Hi George, have you ever thought of having an eBook made that combined Books 4 and 5 in chronological order?

No, I will leave that exercise to my fans.

Your use of "threatening" is rather like the "comfy chair torture" of Monty Python's Spanish Inquisition, IMO -- please "threaten" your fans some more. ;D

BTW, don't know if you've seen this yet or not, but I thought this might amuse you a wee bit:

Pseudo-history of ASOIAF in detail? Sign me up. I guess it’s too late to add a bunch of tourney stats from bygone eras. Sure, everyone knows who won, placed or showed at Harrenhal, but who finished fourth? And how do the knights of the “Live Lance” era compare to those in a time when it was still legal to rub weirwood resin on their gauntlets? Who is considered the Babe Ruth of the melee? I’ve been known to geek out.
Aug. 26th, 2012 05:01 am (UTC)
This is slightly embarrassing to admit, but I think I know Westerosi history better than REAL history.

Aug. 28th, 2012 01:02 pm (UTC)
I'll send you a box of most delicious chocolates if your threat comes to light. Fake history, especially by yourself, is just too engrossing.
