Similarly, the appendices at the end of Lord of the Rings are what got me into world building in AD&D, which in turn got me into spreadsheets and HTML and other marketable skills when computers became available.

(I think there probably have been more RPG worlds made than there have been actual (tabletop) RPG players.)

However, what got me interested in current events was Tom Lehrer and MAD Magazine.
