Chicon Looms

We're off to the airport in a couple of hours, on our way to Chicago for worldcon.

And I've got some great news for the GAME OF THRONES fans who will be joining us there... HBO is sending in our own late, lamented Ser Rodrik Cassel, RON DONACHIE, and his lovely wife to represent the series at the con.

Ron tells me that he'll be glad to sign autographs, do interviews, kaffeeklatches, and whatever, and I've passed that word along to the concom. It's late, of course, and the program book is already at the printers, but they should be able to add him to some program items. Watch the daily newsletter for updates on that.

Looking forward to seeing him... and all of you.

Worldcon! Accept no substitutes.

YOU WERE ROBBED AND I AM DAMN MAD!!
I know you are a bigger person than I so please excuse my “rant”.

So sadden and disappointed that the brilliant DWD did not win the HUGO and am still trying to figure it out. Sure you will take the high road as you usually do and remain a gentleman. As one of the loyal readers of the ASoIaF series, I do not have to do so. Have been reading fantasy & sci-fi for years and this series from the beginning – so am no newbie to this genre. Your work on this series has to rank near the top for creativity and taking chances. When I first read GOT was totally blown away – the creativity was amazing and not having to resort to the use of magics to “save the day” was such a breath of fresh air. If not for the success of this series would be interesting to know how popular/mainstream fantasy would be today? Tolkien inspired others to write and personally I believe you have done the same. HUGO voters should be giving you a lifetime achievement award rather than this travesty.

I am wondering if commercial success had a bearing on DWD not winning. Many times people will vote for a more obscure nominee thinking that most everyone else will vote for what they feel is a shoe-in. Just a thought.

Hope you are not too disappointed – and in closing would like to say this? 20+ years from now when people are still reading ASoIaF wonder how many will have ever heard of Among Others.

You win some, you lose some.

Hey, I'm not the founder of the Hugo Losers Party for nought.

Lots of great books have won the Hugo. And lots haven't.

It's a honor just to be nominated. And DANCE has received plenty of honors, so I'm not exactly overlooked.

So all you can is congratulate the winners, and strive to make the next book even better.
