Theon at Moat Cailin: the Calendar

The official 2013 SONG OF ICE AND FIRE calendar is on sale at your favorite bookstore, br it brick & mortar or internet (if it's not, time to find a new favorite bookstore). Some gorgeous artwork by Marc Simonetti this year.

And courtesy of Marc, and Random House, we also have a YouTube video about the "making of" said calendar, so you can see how all this comes together.

So Theon's not dead. No book has shown him at Moat cailin and i'm on aFfC.

Not cool George. I forgive you though!

Re: Spoiler!
Well, in fact, you can tell that in the book, it is never said that theon is dead. It's something that happened to me, first i think he was, but then i've realized he could be alive (in some dark place in some ominous castle in the north)

Hi :)

Re: Spoiler!
There's a mention about Theon being flayed alive by Ramsay Snow in "A Storm of Swords", shortly before the red wedding.

By the way
The painting is absolutely beautiful.

That is really cool. I LOVE the new calendar. It's really ominous and beautiful. Very unique. This month I have the Oberyn and The Mountain on my wall.

The imagery sends shivers down my spine.

This part of Dance with Dragons was one of those small victories for Theon, but where he had no joy in conquering at all.
Somehow, even though I love his arc and character, I want Stannis to decapitate him. Not because I hate him, but because he's been through enough and continuing to live would only bring more pain and suffering to him. Then again, that same pain and suffering makes his chapters such a great read. That, and all that based Manderly.

Also, George, was there a Russian inspiration for the coming battle near Winterfell?

Umm, yeah, that was awesome.

That was amazing!
That was truly amazing. The detail is incredible. I know a little bit about using PhotoShop an Illustrator, but I do not know what program this could be. I am in awe of the skill of this artist.

Re: That was amazing!
I think it is most likely Corel Painter 12. Its preferred by serious digital artists once they make the jump to a Wacom Cintiq.

Art inspiring art
Looking forward to picking it up and scanning right to May. A special month because my birthday falls on it, and the new Duncan and Egg story will be released. Which will make May everyone's special month.

I would love to see a video like that of you writing a chapter of Winds of winter. Adding bits, deleting things...
The calendar looks like a must have.

I'm on it! This is greatness!

A beautiful piece of art. I'm pretty sure I could watch speed paintings all day.

I bought this calendar as soon as it became available and it is absolutely beautiful. I couldn't figure out what this cover image was though, so now I know its Theon at Moat Cailin. I love all of the images, particularly the one of Dany in the pit in Mereen with her Drogon and Arya in the House of Black and White cellar with the faces. If anyone is a serious aSoIaF fan, they've gotta get this calendar.

Is Catelyn going to be in any of the calendars EVER?

Does Lady Stoneheart count? ;) She is featured very prominently in one of the pictures! Love this calendar... got it a few weeks ago! (Though there are some little details inconsistent with book descriptions that irk me a little... like Brienne looking much too small/feminine haha) But still, it's so so gorgeous and I can't wait to be able to use it next year!

The image of Lady Stoneheart with her scarred neck and the people hanging is very chilling, very well done.

Not quite Bob Ross...
Very cool.

WOW. What a kick-ass video! Thanks!

Got mine already1 Made sure I ordered the 2012 and 2013 ones respectively, after the 2011 was hard to come by (don't have it).

On the 20th, I'll send you a birthday message through here, but in case you don't get to read it until after the 20th, Happy Birthday! :D May there be many more :)

It's the 2009 calendar that's REALLY hard to come by.

And the 2010 calendar. (Which, alas, does not exist).

Aaaargh, and I've already picked up my calender for next year. I was looking for this last year, though! I'll be sure to look for it next time I'm at a Barnes & Noble.

Simply stunning...this was really amazing to see from start to finish. I am in awe of Marc's work and I must say I am probably going to have to go ahead and get one of these for my next year's calendar. Amazing what a lot of these talented artists can do through a digital medium nowadays.

So George, who did the artwork on the 2009 calendar, the one you said is so hard to come by? Probably a dumb question but what makes that one so hard to find? I am guessing there were just a great deal fewer of them printed.

Re: Wow!
Michael Komarck did the art for the 2009 calendar.

What makes it hard to find? The 2009 calendar was published by DB Pro, the 2011/2012/2013 calendars by Random House.

I prefer locations over characters...
The Calendar with all the various locations from a few years ago was the one I really wanted. I even considered buying some of the original artwork when the artist was selling them, but alas, I missed out on both.

I have not bothered with the more recent calendars, as they have featured characters over locations.

This one, going from Theon at Moat Cailin alone, seems like it might offer both, which might be great. It looks fantastic from little I have seen.

I will put this on my wish list. Maybe I'll actually even get it!

Re: I prefer locations over characters...
Some of Ted Nasmith's originals for the 2011 calendar are still available for sale, I believe.

This is amazing, what a piece of artwork.
Sep. 14th, 2012 01:43 pm (UTC)
Good stuff.
Beautifully gloomy. I must've missed something on my fourth reading of ASOS; I didn't picture quite so many trees.

I received my birthday books from you in the mail this morning, and they are wonderful! Thanks so very much!

I will of course be getting this beautiful calendar for next year. Wonderful artwork!

Thank you!
Sorry to be completely off-topic, but I just wanted to say a quick thanks! My signed anthologies I ordered for my brother and I just arrived today, complete with very nice little inscriptions that I wasn't even expecting! Thank you so much, George. You are very, very good to all of us fans :)

It is out. It debuted at the San Diego Comicon.

Alright, I'm giddy. I just bought the calendar on Amazon. I can't wait! Eeeee!
Sep. 18th, 2012 01:26 am (UTC)
Oh happy days!!!
Marc Simonetti is an excellent artist that much is clear! Judging just from that 10 minute video about the making of the calendar, hell I got tired just from watching. This man's brain must be a living canvas of creativity and imagination...scary! :-)

I am happy to report that I got my calendar back in Julyan it is now waiting for its day to come! I can't wait to unwrap it!
Sep. 18th, 2012 10:57 pm (UTC)
That was 10 minutes well spent, and the music was awesome! Loved it.
