There must be something about the words "dance" and "dragons."
We all know how long the last novel took. And now I am writing the "sidebar" (hoo hah) about the first Dance of the Dragons, the fratricidal civil war between King Aegon II and his half-sister Rhaenyra, for THE WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE, and it's turned into a monster too.
As of today, I have a hundred and three bloody manuscript pages (some VERY bloody) and still no end at hand. I had hoped to finish this one today, but... no, not even close. Lots more to write.
I think there's some good stuff here, and judging by the reception my reading got at Chicon, most of you seem to like the fake history too. But DAMN, there a lot of it.
Nothing to do but keep doing.
Dance, you dragons, dance, dance...

On your side in Kansas City.
I need to find any thing else you have written in regards to this series to keep me entertained enough during my wait. Getting more information about the world and characters would be awesome and would also be a great addition to the five books I have of yours right now (the Ice and Fire ones so far). Is there a list some where?
Wow, I did not mean to write this much.. sorry! Good luck and try not to tire yourself too much!

For sure, it' s going to be an awesome guide to us fans.
Keep on the great work George (:
Cheers!
Tolkien was the king of fake history so it is a noble tradition!
I'll soon need a special tower for my books, too. *grin*
Seeing that there is something like this "fake history" as you put it is something else to look forward to! I always loved Dunk and Egg stories, so I'm quite excited to see how this war goes :)
I'm curious about what sort of format The World of Ice and Fire is going to have. Is it written like some sort of faux history textbook? Or are there actual chapters with different POVs? Either way, I'm looking forward to becoming a Westerosi history buff (because God knows I totally fail at REAL history! Not that it's anywhere near as interesting anyway...)
And thank you so much for all those dances.
Hopefully good things can come from the words "winds" and "winter", and "dream" and "spring". ;)
It sounds great though! Despite there being lots to write, I hope it goes well...looking forward to this book next year. Does having it done now (between Books 5 and 6) rather than after Ice and Fire ends affect what history will go into Books Six and Seven? Each book you reveal more and more of the history, so I'd figure I'd ask and hope to get a hint of 'the history you tell in Ice and Fire' vs 'the history I tell in this book'.
How many more manuscript pages do you predict?
Also - two of my favorite teams play today...the Giants and the Ravens. With the lockout on for NHL, I'll be following football more frequently.
