Still Writing

There must be something about the words "dance" and "dragons."

We all know how long the last novel took. And now I am writing the "sidebar" (hoo hah) about the first Dance of the Dragons, the fratricidal civil war between King Aegon II and his half-sister Rhaenyra, for THE WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE, and it's turned into a monster too.

As of today, I have a hundred and three bloody manuscript pages (some VERY bloody) and still no end at hand. I had hoped to finish this one today, but... no, not even close. Lots more to write.

I think there's some good stuff here, and judging by the reception my reading got at Chicon, most of you seem to like the fake history too. But DAMN, there a lot of it.

Nothing to do but keep doing.

Dance, you dragons, dance, dance...

I consider your work as a miracle, and yourself as a wizard... as if the whole world of Westeros is being created before my eyes. Thank you, Demiurge!

Even though it seems to be a pain, I am sure it will be great when you are finished. If I didn't rely on my fingers so much day to day, I would be chewing them to the bone right now while waiting on your next Song of Ice and Fire book to come out lol.

I need to find any thing else you have written in regards to this series to keep me entertained enough during my wait. Getting more information about the world and characters would be awesome and would also be a great addition to the five books I have of yours right now (the Ice and Fire ones so far). Is there a list some where?

Wow, I did not mean to write this much.. sorry! Good luck and try not to tire yourself too much!

Thanks for the update! Take your time, I'll be ever so patient. Already re-reading the series to keep myself occupied, and to go over all the nifty details that are missed during the first read.

Love to hear updates of your writing process.

You know how it is. Once you've unleashed that beast that Imagination is, it just won't return to the dungeon! It wants to fly and pillage and burn things and eat horses in whole... It wants to, you know, LIVE! ;)

That was beautiful!

I can't deny that the wait is agonizing, but I'd much rather wait a lifetime for something spectacular than just a couple years for something rushed and shallow!

'The World of Ice and Fire' is beginning to sound increasingly interesting! I had imagined a few notes and some pictures but it sounds instead as though we are in for some genuinely interesting content - something to keep readers ticking over a while :D
Tolkien was the king of fake history so it is a noble tradition!

What`s about Dunk and Egg tales?

Fake history
There can never be too much fake history! Never, ever.

I usually don't buy compagnon books but yours sounds like it contains original material worth a novel in its own.
I'll soon need a special tower for my books, too. *grin*

I still haven't finished A Dance with Dragons, although I bought it day one (somehow busy, and also got engrossed in Agatha Christie, love the old lady). I'm picking it up now again, but I'm in no hurry XD

Seeing that there is something like this "fake history" as you put it is something else to look forward to! I always loved Dunk and Egg stories, so I'm quite excited to see how this war goes :)

Awesome! History is one of my passions, real or not. "How did we get from there to here" is an important question to me, and one that I'm glad you take the time to work out. I'm not reading for the dragons, I'm reading for the detail and careful thought. The dragons are just a nice perk.

Sounds like you've got a lot on your plate there! Can't wait to read it, of course!

I'm curious about what sort of format The World of Ice and Fire is going to have. Is it written like some sort of faux history textbook? Or are there actual chapters with different POVs? Either way, I'm looking forward to becoming a Westerosi history buff (because God knows I totally fail at REAL history! Not that it's anywhere near as interesting anyway...)

That post made me laugh. ^^ Be brave, mister! You can do it!
And thank you so much for all those dances.

" There must be something about the words "dance" and "dragons." "

Hopefully good things can come from the words "winds" and "winter", and "dream" and "spring". ;)

It sounds great though! Despite there being lots to write, I hope it goes well...looking forward to this book next year. Does having it done now (between Books 5 and 6) rather than after Ice and Fire ends affect what history will go into Books Six and Seven? Each book you reveal more and more of the history, so I'd figure I'd ask and hope to get a hint of 'the history you tell in Ice and Fire' vs 'the history I tell in this book'.

How many more manuscript pages do you predict?

Also - two of my favorite teams play today...the Giants and the Ravens. With the lockout on for NHL, I'll be following football more frequently.
