Back Home

Got back from LA yesterday evening.

I had a great visit out there... well, aside from losing the Emmy (I am now 0-4 all time), but it IS an honor just to nominated, yadda yadda yadda. Some amazing meetings followed, with some amazing people, most of which I can't tell you about... yet. But maybe one day.

And it's always nice to be back in Santa Fe, with Parris, the cats, and the minions. And to escape the LA heat as well.

But the amount of crap that has piled up in my absence is daunting. There's just too damn much. Even with three assistants, I am falling further and further behind, and more and more stuff keeps getting dumped on my plate. Somehow just walking back into my office after a trip sends my stress level ratcheting up to ten. Or maybe to a hundred, depending on your scale.

There is no help for it, I suppose. Price of success, and all that. And I know, lots and lots of folks would love to have my problems. No one needs to tell me that.

Even so...

(Today's football games did not much help my mood either. Life is meaningingless and full of pain...)

You can do it!! Maybe hire a personal assistant? I am sure many would do the job for free. :D

Uh... I have three personal assistants.

I know the feeling
I know the feeling, except I have 3 assignments due next week for university and I have barely started. Good books keep finding me even when I am not looking for them.

It does sound quite daunting. . . especially if three assistants are still not making the burden easy enough to bear. Yikes. Shall I bring forth my Magic Paperwork Vanishing Trick?

Let me brush up my resume
Sounds like you need a fourth personal assistant, sir. After all, what would the Fantastic Four be without one? They'd be the Fantastic Three, and that's a complete alliterative fail. I'll refrain from revealing my NFL allegiances until after I've convinced you of how indispensable I am.

But, as for your stress, I suppose it really ain't easy being so awesome. Hope you find some calm in the storm at some point.

Congrats on the Emmy nod! But, if they pull this again next year, I say you make like Westeros and storm the stage. Take what's yours in fire and blood and stuff.

Oh, please, don't say, that "life is meaningless and full of pain"!
I am writing this on behalf of a group of your fans from Moscow who are constantly praying for your health and wellbeing.
For a couple of months already your statuses have been: tired, sad, disappointed and stresed... Telling you not to overwork yourself, to say "no" to new projects - that is meaningless.
You ARE great! Of course being great is hard but you'll manage. You always did.
I know my words can't make it easier and my friends and I can't help you (if we can - just tell us!), but please be strong and stay cheerful...

Fame and fortune has its price. I'm confident you'll get passed it.

Just don't go crazy and completely stop bathing and trimming your fingernails.

Or stay in your house and continue to watch Ice Station Zebra over a hundred times. That's when you know the fame and fortune is too much for you.

We didn't see the games, but we saw the Jets score and right away my husband said we'd be seeing "life is meaningless and full of pain" So sorry...

At least being home after a long time away you should be able to get some kind of rest without thinking about where you have to be at every moment. Try to find a few minutes a day for some "you" time. You deserve it.

I agree, life is painful and finding meaning can be difficult particularly when one is stressed out and jet-lagged. Hope you find some peace at home with your loved ones. Be kind to yourself.

Keep calm and feel the love
I cant begin to understand the level of stress you have, but I'm sure I speak for a lot of people(and you may already know this)We all love the work you're doing and what you are going through to deliver your visions to us.

Stay strong George no matter how tough it gets we the fans love you and are behind you 100%.

George you just need to make a clone of yourself and that would take care of much stress ;)

If you need another assistant, I for one would be more than happy to oblige! Three is the magic number but in your case you probably need seven :)

Work that requires inspiration is not well suited to multi-tasking. So I imagine the more stuff piles up, the more it clouds your mind with worry, and the less writing you get done per day.

The only advice I can give towards "clearing your mind to single focus" is to think of all tasks/problems/pending matters in terms of "what's the worst that can happen if I don't get this done?". Maybe most of it will seem less heavy when put in perspective... after all, it's "only work", and at your level, I don't suppose you need to worry about getting fired, or not being able to provide financially for your household, etc.

Finally, I would also remind you of what you wrote in Game of Thrones... most men would rather deny a hard truth than face it. It could be that you need to come to grips with canceling some of your ongoing stuff, cut off a finger or two, to save the hand...

Good luck!

The only way through a pile on your desk is one sheet at a time. The worst point is when you start. What always pisses me off is when a new pile is dropped on top of my almost finished pile. Hope the stress abates soon.

I really need your thoughts on yesterday's travesty, George. A friend had tickets and we (both Jets fans) sat there with our mouths open until we just couldn't take anymore. I understand your receiver is out injured, but he shouldn't be the only guy on the team who can catch the ball. Of course, if you're just passing it into the turf six yards in front of you every time it leaves your fingertips, that's a problem, too. I can't even talk about the blocked punt.

Keep calm, make a cup of tea and carry on. Don't think about climbing the mountain in one go, take one step at a time.

I felt a twinge of guilt watching the Niners obliterate the Jets. Not much, mind, but a little bit.

Frankly, if the NFL gave negative points for horrible performances, the Jets earned at least -10 for that game. The defense was porous and the offense rotten. I haven't seen an ostensibly "decent" team suck that much since the Raiders had JaMarcus Russell.

Perhaps you could take a short vacation from work? Let your assistants handle everything and spend a day or two doing normal stuff with Parris? I wouldn't want my favorite author to start wishing he wasn't so popular! And I don't know about all your fans but I wouldn't mind a more distant release date for Winds of Winter if that meant you could keep your sanity. Also, I was watching Beauty and the Beast season one for the first time and thought it was hilarious when an episode opened with you reading one of your books!

I'd like to say I felt a twinge of guilt watching the Eagles squeak another one out over the Giants, but instead I did a little sack dance. Sorry, George.

GRRM, we love your books and your characters and yes, we want to read more, more, more and watch them on television, etc etc etc but none of that will happen if you keel over. Stress kills. In so many ways. And if you die from a heart attack or stroke or whatever you know what? The world will mourn but it will move on and we will read other books. It's not worth your life. So for today and regularly... just say "fuck it"!! :D And do something fun.

Only stressful if you don't start...
It's only stressful if you don't start and you see it all just sitting there. Pick a spot and just "start". Pretty soon, before you know it, you'll be on a roll.

"falling further and further behind"
Please, dear god, no! Maybe a little holiday somewhere remote and stress free may be in order. Alaska maybe, let the cold get to your bones.

Don't worry...be happy...
Sorry to hear that you are soo stressed out and that you have so many things piling up, but there always a light at the end of the tunnel. Why don't you give yourself a few days and do nothing...I know that sounds like the opposite of what you should be doing, but sometimes if one is stressed out and pushes himself or herself to deal with things head-on with no rest or time-off, the results might not be as satisfactory as expected.

If you are in rough shape and try to deal with all that is in front of you, then you might not manage to accomplish all that you want! Perhaps some time away from it all (which doesn't include meeting producers, answering e-mails, nor trying to appease your fans etc.) will give you the energy you need, so that when you get back you'll have a new focus and new motivation...Its a kind of more with less type of deal.

Anyways I hope you manage to get some rest and relax a bit!

I was so disappointed Game of Thrones didn't win anything!! Looking forward to the next season!

Oddly enough, as I watched my favorite team beat the Jets to a horrible degree, I kept thinking how much this was going to upset George RR Martin and if it would prevent him from doing some much needed (and eagerly anticipated) work on ASOIAF. Please say it isn't so, George. Please say it isn't so!!!
