Back Home

sad sack
Got back from LA yesterday evening.

I had a great visit out there... well, aside from losing the Emmy (I am now 0-4 all time), but it IS an honor just to nominated, yadda yadda yadda. Some amazing meetings followed, with some amazing people, most of which I can't tell you about... yet. But maybe one day.

And it's always nice to be back in Santa Fe, with Parris, the cats, and the minions. And to escape the LA heat as well.

But the amount of crap that has piled up in my absence is daunting. There's just too damn much. Even with three assistants, I am falling further and further behind, and more and more stuff keeps getting dumped on my plate. Somehow just walking back into my office after a trip sends my stress level ratcheting up to ten. Or maybe to a hundred, depending on your scale.

sigh

There is no help for it, I suppose. Price of success, and all that. And I know, lots and lots of folks would love to have my problems. No one needs to tell me that.

Even so...

(Today's football games did not much help my mood either. Life is meaningingless and full of pain...)

There comes a time when we need gatekeepers to say "No" for us when we can't do it ourselves. A gatekeeper is a step up from personal assistant. Someone who just says "NO" when all of those secondary requests keep making our life miserable. You are a wonderfully accessible person which is a great asset but can be a huge problem when trying to say "NO!". Good luck, please minimize your stress so we have you around for another 25 years or so....

Years ago I told a therapist about some problems I'd been having, and then I added, "And I know these aren't big problems in the grand scheme of things, and I could be much worse off..."

...and he stopped me and said, "But they're YOUR problems, so they are very important to you, and as such we're going to respect them and try and fix them."

No apology necessary for talking about your problems. They're yours and they're bothering you, so that means they're real and worth addressing (and often the first step is venting about them).

If I didn't know better I'd say you were a Cubs/Bears fan (we like pain...not). Totally know where you're coming from.

I'd say go write something to take the edge off but I'm pretty sure writing commitments are adding to the stress. So...go for a nice walk maybe? If the weather is nice?

so George
You think it's Tebow Time yet? Sanchez looked positively brutal, although it was a pretty tough matchup against that D.

Just above your post is a picture of Elizabeth Moon's office. I suspect the problem is endemic to your chosen avocations.

A nice laptop on the deck with a cool drink until your assistants bring faux order to the environment is just the ticket!

After the loss we took last week (lifelong 49ers fan). I was shocked at how we dominated the Jets. I will take it but I feel sorry for your Jets. Its never fun to be on the receiving end of one of those thrashings (I know we had enough of those the last decade).

Life is meaningful and full of joy
Dear George,

Don't despair. Life is meaningful and full of joy!

Because I deeply care for your well-being, I suggest you take a day off on October 14, surround yourself loved ones, maybe go to one of those lovely spa resorts in the great state of New Mexico. Stay away from TV and other forms of media. Don't work on that Patchface POV chapter for The Winds of Winter. Just relax, you deserve it.

Sincerely,
Jerry

George i am HUGE fan of your work, i am from Colombia, and i literally read the whole A Song of Ice and Fire in two months, and it has fascinated me since. I know it gets tough and one gets tired, but try to remember the reasons why you are doing all these! For the fans, for your wife, for yourself, because you created what i think is the best fantasy series of all time!! I know you can do it George, and i just wanted to send you this message to let you know your fans support you and will stand by you no matter what!

Thank you for all your work, never give up!

Sergio.

Circus Team
I have to say that I don't really feel bad for the Jets at all. I do feel bad for Jets fans, but not the Jets. The Jets and Rex Ryan have constantly and actively been seeking-out national attention and the Jets, as a generalized entity - I realize there are individual exceptions, have a certain, undeserved air of arrogance. Truly, the worst part is that there is beginning to be rumblings for Tebow to to takeover the starting QB job. What an absolute nightmare. I will say that any team facing the 49ers, after their loss to the Vikings, were bound to be obliterated. I don't mind that it was the Jets. I actually feel worse for the Giants. The Giants are a stark contrast to the joke that the Jets have become. I appreciate the professionalism and humbleness of the best organization of the past five years (my criteria is SB victories). It is too bad that they had to drop a close game to Vick, the dog-killing felon; I believe he is sorry he had to go to prison, but I don't believe he is sorry about the disgusting acts that he allowed to occur. Sorry the Giants loss and sorry that the Jets have become the circus team of the league.

Seems like every blog I follow written by someone who is either a writer or who works in publishing is all about the stress this week. It seems like everyone's desks are stacked high with projects, and they are feeling overwhelmed.

But these things come and go in cycles. Take a deep breath, smell the roses - stressing isn't going to make it happen faster, or more efficiently. It just wears you out.

And don't worry - that Emmy is coming, someday!

The night is dark...
George, it´s not that lot of folks would like to have your problems, stress is a problem,no matter where it cames from, it´s that lot of folks are waiting for you to publish your new book, to enlighten our day (sigh, have i really written that)
And don´t forget, life is dark and full of terrors
Thank you very much, I really appreciate your hard work.

Stress
I know that feeling of stress level going up ... and I hate it. It's almost daily for me these days.

So, my cure/fix to help deal with that stress is to read your books and get lost ... I wish I had something to give back!
