Back Home

Got back from LA yesterday evening.

I had a great visit out there... well, aside from losing the Emmy (I am now 0-4 all time), but it IS an honor just to nominated, yadda yadda yadda. Some amazing meetings followed, with some amazing people, most of which I can't tell you about... yet. But maybe one day.

And it's always nice to be back in Santa Fe, with Parris, the cats, and the minions. And to escape the LA heat as well.

But the amount of crap that has piled up in my absence is daunting. There's just too damn much. Even with three assistants, I am falling further and further behind, and more and more stuff keeps getting dumped on my plate. Somehow just walking back into my office after a trip sends my stress level ratcheting up to ten. Or maybe to a hundred, depending on your scale.

There is no help for it, I suppose. Price of success, and all that. And I know, lots and lots of folks would love to have my problems. No one needs to tell me that.

Even so...

(Today's football games did not much help my mood either. Life is meaningingless and full of pain...)

Chicken Soup
I'm gonna add to the many suggestions...only because you are SO important to us all George RR Martin!! Of course you're stressed, that makes perfect sense. You have a LOT on your plate like, ALL the time and the pressure from every direction must be overwhelmingly demanding. YIKES!! OK with THAT said. I'd suggest getting a pool if you don't have one, install whatever creature comforts in your home that you've always wanted and while it's happening let the chaos be managed by the loving & devoted minions. Make sure at least one minion is extremely organized and helps you organize your time so you get at least 2 hours in your day relaxing, (preferably swimming), getting a message at least 2 times a week and have everything laid out for you in small piles in some sort sort of priority...keep the tasks as small bites as possible, they get chipped away that way and before you know it...they're all done!!!
Love you GRRM!!! You have to be a pretty special person to have created such an amazing world. Thank you!
here from your native neck of the woods...

If the Jets are getting blown out again next week I expect that Tebow will be under center for most of the second half. The Jets are a truly horrible team. (I'm hoping they make me eat my words) To my prejudiced eye they are the perfect reflection of the owner.

Osi, Osi, Osi... The Giants weren't sharp. They should have stuck with Brown as the RB. No one in the League is tougher than Ahmad nor runs harder, but Brown is the better back for the Giants. On that interception, either Eli misread the D or somebody blew the coverage and got lucky. That play and subsequent lack of defensive cohesiveness that we saw last season sealed the deal. Losing Phillips for the next game or three could be the straw although the replacement Brown (the other one) seemed to have gotten his sea legs by games end. How many injuries can this team weather?

As for the agita, it's beginning to sound like you do not want to prioritize your tasks. Sometimes you have to do some drastic pruning. Be honest with yourself and be firm with others. To sum up: Do less, accomplish more.

Maybe one of your assistants can have a button made with the slogan, "Just said No."

I Sense A Deal In The Works
A movie or series for "The Hedge Knight" perhaps? Would be very cool!

I love your work and work from home. If there is anything I can do, give me a holler!

s..s..s.. SSSTRESSS
Feel the same entering my office after a break.Self-employed,no minions to snarl at,(do kids qualify as minions?),I am Andy Dufresne hearing Shawshank's doors snap shut.I take a deep breath, say,'Suck it up,' & .. begin.Beginning is the hardest bit.Later I take the direwolf for a walk:in the forests, along the shore,up to the standing-stones.And then I am a Stark, escaping into the Wolf Wood. Sometimes I smell the smoke from Winterfell's burning or glimpse Theon & Asha's ships' sails off-shore.I race my direwolf through the woods to warn Castle Black. After our audience with the Lord Commander,we go home & I feed my direwolf "Shaggy Dog's Krunchy Kibble-fortified with calcium & iron.. born".So thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for keeping me sane(ish).

Still haven't learned to say no yet, George?
I think you need to go all Michael Keaton in Multiplicity to get things done.

Yes, I know. the clones get progressively less competent... but you can focus their attentions on your projects that mean less to me (I know, I am greedy). The worst clone can take care of your e-mail (but not you Not A Blog blog).

Keeping things simple
Hi George:

Your LA meetings sound exciting. Obviously we'll be thrilled if there are going to be Game of Thrones spin off series, or a Fevre Dream film, or whatever. Just like we'll be thrilled to see the ice and fire map book and world book, etc.

That said, maybe in part for your own sanity it's best to take things one at a time and prioritise! And maybe (tentative maybe, not wishing to offend) focus on son of kong and son of son of kong more than on all those monkeys.

After all, I suspect that in years to come the thing that will endure the most will be one of the best pieces of prose fiction ever written. It WILL be the ultimate kong, the sun around which the planets orbit – emphasis on the WILL because the way you write, it's inevitable.

King me for a day is what Damacles' friend said; he did not enjoy that sword dangling by a thread above his head for that fateful day. Take your time, ser! Rome wasn't built in a day, or even two days.

You know what time it is?
IT'S TEBOW TIME!! C'mon, say it with me!

If there is one lesson to take from your literary work, it is that things can always find a way to get worse. Well get ready, George, Gang Green isn't even halfway to rock bottom yet.

P.S. I apologize for the note of glee in my post, but it is just great to be a Broncos fan and know that this guy is someone else's problem now.

Thank you!
I think these are the best place and moment to express my sincere gratitude to you. I've just received the signed books today. They're one for me and the other for my girlfriend and most probably future wife and we decided that they will be the first books we'll put on our shelf in our house one day. If I had to pick one single reason for saying thank you I would say that from reading your books I realized how everyone in life must walk a long and winding road before coming to an epic end, and this gives me the courage to face the apparently unbearable stress of everyday's life. So keep up the spirit! You've got all of our support!!!

P.S. I've just realized that the comment above is about the same stuff more or less... but I wanted to thank you anyway even if that might sound trivial.

Anti stress tips: the cats! (obvious); a clean desk policy; watching a good movie or series (Freaks & Geeks, Dexter), sleep! (very important), listen to music (so much! from very quiet to very loud and upbeat) or go to a spa. All of these only take a couple of hours or less. Good luck!

I just finished watching a post-Emmy interview of yours and felt compelled to send you a comment. It is always nice to see you in your trademark fisherman!s cap, however this recent interview caught you all dressed up. I must say you clean up quite fine! You were looking very regal as you discussed Season 3 with a reporter. Besides your handsome appearance it is always a pleasure to hear your enthusiasm. I know you realize how much your fans appreciate your accessibility, but I have to point it out again. I eagerly await Season 3, but even more TWoW.

Say no more often
Oh dear, that doesn't sound good :-( Hire more assistants. Get more ruthless about saying no. Keep on writing The Book That Shall Not Be Named....
