My gawd, I would NEVER presume to send something to an author asking it to be signed. I have two signed books which I was lucky enough to get because I got to meet the authors; it's the memory of those meetings which makes the signed version of the book a bit special to me.
Oh and hey those baseballs? You could write back, "sure, we'll send them back to you. One by one.. At random intervals. Through your windows..."
You could build a trebuchet and call it research for the books...
