WGA Nominates HBO's GOT

The writing staff of HBO's series GAME OF THRONES, season two, has been nominated by the members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) for the 2013 WGA Awards, Best Drama.

Second year in a row. The finalists are MAD MEN, HOMELAND, BREAKING BAD, BOARDWALK EMPIRE, and us. "Us" this year being David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Vanessa Taylor, Bryan Cogman, and yours truly.

Congratulations to David, Dan, Bryan, and Vanessa. And to the writers on the other shows, all of whom did some kickass work this year.

It is always nice to be recognized by your fellow writers.

I feel like this show really stands out as an illustration of the potential for a really successful adaptation of an epic series to the screen, and while I would never downplay the crew as a whole I think the writers deserve credit for that first and foremost. I'm a bit biased, though, as it's irritating for me that directors typically receive far more praise and acknowledgement than screenwriters. Sure, there's a lot of creative licensing with directing, but that starts with the writers! Without a good script you have nothing.

Now, if Stephen King's Dark Tower series could be adapted with even half the love and devotion that went into making Game of Thrones what it is today, I would be very, very happy.
