Cleaning Out the Lockers

G-men
Well, the NFL season is over. My NFL season, anyway.

Yeah, yeah, I know, playoffs, superbowl, yadda yadda yadda. I am an NFL fan, so I'll be watching... but with the Jets and Giants both eliminated, my interest will be mostly academic. I will be rooting against the Patriots and Evil Little Bill, of course, and if the Cowboys somehow make it in, I will be cheering for them to get stomped as well... but there's no one that I will actually be rooting FOR, which takes some of the spice out of the show. (Though it does lessen the tension considerably when you don't actually care who wins).

The Giants won their final game today, crushing the disspirited Philadelphia Eagles to finish at 9-7. That's the same record as last year, but last year it was enough to win the NFL East and start them on their Superbowl run, and this year it's not... mainly due to tiebreakers, although the Giants annual second-half-of-season swoon set up the mess. Big Blue looked great today, on both offense and defense. So great you have to wonder who the hell those guys in the Giants uniforms were the last two weeks. They couldn't possibly have been the same players. My G-Men are very hard to figure. They can beat anyone, and they can lose to anyone. They seem to play up (or down) to the level of competition. This season they dominated both the Packers and 49ers, the two teams most likely to be playing for the NFC championship next month, but they managed to lose to the Bengals, the Steelers, the Falcons, and the Ravens, and (worse) split with all three of their NFC East rivals. Had they made the playoffs, they could have been very dangerous... or maybe they would have been woeful. I never know. Neither, I fear, does Tom Coughlin.

And the Jets... oh, gods... the Jets lost to the Bills. Badly. Mark Sanchez played QB again, and was awful again. 'Nuff said. The curse continues.

Looking ahead to next season, the Giants need to sign Victor Cruz to a long-term deal, and they have a big decision to make on Osi Umenyiora, who is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent. Osi has been a damned good player for us, but I don't see him coming back. He wants big bucks, and the Giants are not going to give it to him. They have Kiwi at LB, just waiting to move up to DE, and Osi has been starting to fade these last few years. He's still a good pass-rusher, but not the sack machine he was, and he's never been great against the run. Too many teams ran right around him this season, when he failed to set the edge. I think he has a few more good years left, but I don't think it will be in blue. Maybe the Jets can pick him up. They need edge rushers. What the Giants need is more beef in the middle, a monster run-stuffing defensive tackle who can provide some pressure up the gut. Some young cornerbacks would also be good. Corey Webster fell off badly this year, especially against the Ravens.

The Jets... the Jets are a mess. They need to get rid of Tony Sparano and get a real offensive coordinator. Maybe Norv Turner, who is shite as a head coach, but very good as an OC. They need receivers. They need edge rushers. And, boy oh boy, do they need a quarterback. Maybe they can get someone in the draft, or pick up a free agent... though if it's Michael Vick, as I said, I am done with them. They should be better when they get Darrelle Revis and Santonio Holmes back next season, but that alone will not get them to the playoffs. They need to hang on to LaRon Landry as well, he was one of this year's bright spots.

So... a season ends. My seven-day work weeks resume.

Brady vs Manning
As a Bills fan I have nothing to cheer for, except hopefully another January classic featuring Tom Brady vs Peyton Manning. And of course I'll be rooting against Evil Bill and Tom "Boy-toy" Brady.

Good luck with your seven day work weeks George, drink lots of coffee! :)

The Sun Will Come Up Tomorrow
Dear George,
I have given a few taunts and eaten some humble pie; it's all in a days work for a fan of the NFL(even a Patriots fan, we are spoiled for the most part). On Feb 4 however, we are all undefeated again.

On another note, I remember that for us Red Sox fans, it wasn't until Stephen King finished his Dark Tower series that we won the World Series, so I was thinking that perhaps in order for the Jets to win a Superbowl you may have to finish ASoIaF, just a hypothesis...

That Jets game was fucking awful; even the Schadenfreude of watching them getting kicked up and down the field did not redeem it. I mean, I switch over from the Giants game to see Sanchez...lob a pick-six, like clockwork.

For my own team, I just don't have faith that the Niners can pull it out. Both AS and CK are not quite solid enough at QB to go the distance (although I said similar things about the SF Giants and especially their pitching staff, and look what happened in October). I fear that they'll be one and done in the playoffs. :\

NFL
Even if the Redskins beat the Cowboys (which I consider likely), I'd appreciate any cheers you can spare for the Seahawks.

Russell Wilson would've been a lock for Offensive Rookie of the Year in any season that didn't ALSO have Robert Griffin III in it.

26 passing TDs, 10 INTs, 3 Rushing TDs, and he may have broken a season passer rating of 100.

RGIII has fewer TDs by a smidge, fewer INTs by a lot more, and (as I'm writing this) a 6 point difference in passer rating, and about 15% more yards.

I think we're seeing a new Golden Age for quarterbacking in the NFL - which should give you some hope when it comes to replacing Sanchez.

Think the Jets might trade for Matt Flynn?

As a Bills fan, I was routing for the Jets to win and improve the Buffalo's draft position. So much for that. Ah well, maybe the morale boost will make it easier to re-sign some of their upcoming free agents.

Anyway, I'm completely with you on the Vick boat. The Bills have to share the worry of him coming in next year, and even in a Bills uniform I would only be able to route for a miserable and humiliating failure on his part.

Sorry For Your Loss!
Sorry to hear George!! :(

I haven't met you yet, but I have a feeling you're quite a fan of the Giants, though not sure of the degree. I think I like your series as much as you like the Giants.

7 day work week? Well, don't take on too many projects nor work too hard...hope it goes well!

PS: ordered the direwolf bookends, and pre-ordered the Ice and Fire 2014 calendar! My next GoT /Ice and Fire purchases shall be the Season 3 soundtrack, and The World of Ice and Fire...excluding Winds, of course.

I am pretty sure the Others overran Westeros and killed everyone in the days following the infamous Mark Sanchez Butt Fumble.

Well, on the bright side, you're not out of teams to cheer yet (if I recall something you mentioned on Strombo's show last spring).

Old Man Manning
I am much like you, George. Except I do have someone to root for this year. The other Manning. If he wins it all, I will at least know that Eazy-E is happy.

Until then, CRUSH DALLAS!

You have to admit their collapse was epic and entertaining in a horrible sort of way.

I too am an NFL fan - but rather than one individual team I enjoy watching the season develop and studying far too much Coaches tape.....

I am sad that Adrian Peterson didn't quite make it - just NINE YARDS short of Eric Dickerson's Rush record, but genuine respect to him - he did not KNOW when he came off the field - he was more concerned that they got the win and in.

A close game and I won't be that surprised if they repeat the dose next week up at Lambeau.

Giants join a select but sizeable group of Champions that do not make the playoffs the following year. Not that much to fix - still a winning team, and at the top for some time now.

Jets - toilet time. Sparano will be out and all the QBs with him. And maybe - just maybe, someone will buy Rex a lip zip.......

Liz sends Happier New Year wishes

Come on, how can you not want to cheer on AP?
I mean he was extremely close to breaking one of the most hallowed records in the NFL, and when asked how it felt coming up 9 yards short his response was "What?". He didn't even know, because while he wanted that record his real focus was on carrying his team to the playoffs, which he did. How can you not want to cheer him on in the playoffs?

Ugh, sorry George. I'll be rooting for the hated Pats, but that's just what New Englanders do...

Seriously though, don't work too much. It's good for everyone to get some time off. I want TWOW as much as the next person, but not at the expense of your health and sanity! :)

Seahawks!
Lifelong Wrecking Crew Fan. Now living in Seattle. Granted, I can't stand to watch Pete Carroll on the sideline but I'm all in with the SHAWKS. Trade in your big blue for some aquamarine or whatever that color is.

Jets QB
How would you feel about Alex Smith at QB for the Jets?

P.S. - George, I doubt if you remember me, but I was one of the American guys at the BWB dinner in Melbourne, prior to the con. I told you the story about getting a date by giving away one of your books as a present, and you shook my hand in response. =) You were a very gracious guest, and I wanted to say thanks for being so accessible to your fans. I hope 2013 brings you twice the success and thrice the joy of 2012.

Bye bye Mr. T
About time!! Just look at this year moves!! Gets Tebow, gives Sanchez a ton of money that could have went to the best player on the team, Revis! He's gonna come back and probably hold out! And this is hos our draft could have went:
1. Coples - I still like the pick - 5.5 sacks, gonna be a good player
2. Russell Wilson - taking the hawks to playoffs, would have replaced sanchize by 5th game.
3. T.y. Hilton good player for Colts!! 868 receiving yards, more than any jet
4. Alfred Morris - over 1600 yards rushing for Skins! Probably more than all jet rushers

Yes, that is just this year under Tananbaum!! Leon Washington, brad smith, Brett farve, cutting chad Pennington, Danny Woodhead, and lets not forget Vernon gholston!!
Happy new year!! With the Jets, it can always get worse!!

They need to land Vick. My eagles are going to let him go unfortunately. He's still a very good player.

Feel Free to root for the SEAHAWKS George. After all Seattle is very much like the Winterfell of America.

Northern Most City/Seat

A few leagues from the Border (The WALL) which of course protects us from the Wildlings (Canadians ;)

And of course their alternate Jersey's are "Wolf Grey" ;)

Cheers!

Consistency
I was sorry to see the NY Giants slump when they usually streak. I would not go so far as to say the Giants are a "fraudulent" team like the Houston Texans or Chicago Bears (frauds do not beat the Patriots in a Super Bowl), but consistency is definitely a serious problem. When the Giants are in gear, they are unstoppable, at least. That's better than nothing. It could be worse; they could be the NY Jets.

For now, go Ravens!

I wear Bills memorabilia all day. I'm not interested in sports most of the time, but it feels good when the Bills win because most other times people are just interesting in mocking me. And I do live in NY mind you, and aware of the consequences, though seeing their eyes of shame when they loose is priceless. And my father is a Jets fan, so getting to tease him is a bonus. xD
