A Taste of Winter

For all of you who have been clamoring, I have a somewhat belated Xmas/ New Year's gift, a new sample chapter from THE WINDS OF WINTER. You can find it on my website.

This one features Arianne Martell, Princess of Dorne.

(And here she is, couresty of Fantasy Flight Games and Magali Villeneuve)

Read, enjoy, discuss, and speculate to your heart's content... but not here, please, there are better places for that, like the forums at Westeros and Tower of the Hand.

Me, I have a lot more writing to do. On WINDS, and half a dozen other projects.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
I made the most ridiculous noise in the world when I saw the "New Material in: Ice & Fire Sample" on your home page. It was half way between a squeek of joy and a tea kettle screaming for attention. Never knew I could make such a sound and I actually believe my husband thought I was going to die. Thank you again!

A question for you about "Game of Thrones," if you're willing to share your thoughts.
In the last episode of Season 2, Jaime told Brienne that there were three men in Westeros who might be able to beat him in a sword fight. I assume one of them was Ser Barristan Selmy, but who were the other two? Assuming you know who the screenwriter had in mind, and agree with his assessment, of course. The possibilities that spring to mind as fighters Jaime *might* regard as credible threats include both Clegane brothers, Bronze Yohn Royce, Ser Lyn Corbray, Lord Randyll Tarly, the Red Viper of Dorne, and Darkstar Dayne. (I would think Loras Tyrell might have a chance against him as well, but I don't imagine *Jaime* would think so.)

Re: A question for you about "Game of Thrones," if you're willing to share your thoughts.
If you will check out that scene in the novel, you will see exactly who Jaime was thinking of... though in the book, he is mulling who is stronger than him, not who can beat him in a swordfight.

Thanks George! Timely too, I just finished reading "Remembering Melody" in Dreamsongs I, and needed something to take off that eerie chill it left me with - fantastic story though, and also a fantastic chapter, can't wait till Winds releases

You and me both. I believe he'll finish the book late this year, or early next year, for a release in 2014 (before or after the first volume of the Dunk and Egg stories, we'll see what gets published first tho of the two! Just my prediction...)

Today will be a happier lunchtime than I might have suspected.

I love the look on Aerys Oakheart (I assume that's who it is) in that picture. I imagine poor Oakheart looked like that a lot when Arianne was around.

Good way to start the New Year...thank you kindly ser! All the best in the New Year...I am about half-way through "A Dance Of Dragons" and I have to say, I do like the Martells more and more and of course Areo Hotah (great name by the way)plus the troublesome and quarelsome Sand Snakes...the Red Viper was quite the man and his daughters are quite something also! Still, Arianne is the ahem...center of attention...and for good reason! It will be interesting to see her on-screen if/when the show gets to that point in the storyline!

Sample Chapter
I am so very happy and thankful you bearded devil, you.

And here I was thinking we weren't going to get one this winter.

May the seven keep you.

I think I'm clicking on the wrong link. When I click "Ice & Fire Sample" next to the latest update dated Jan 8, it takes me to Theon's chapter (which is a great chapter). So I'm wondering where the link to Arianne's chapter is hiding.

So amazing! I finished Dance With Dragons about a year ago and I cannot find another book to read that is as good. For an avid reader this is depressing but your sample was a little ray of sunshine. I cannot wait to see what is in store for Westeros when the Dragons arrive!

The title of the webpage is "GRRM - Wild Cards Sample", despite displaying the Arianne chapter. Also there's a long empty scroll space under the last written thing.

Nice chapter. It's welcome to my eyes.

The Theon chapter
Mr. Martin,

I can't express how happy I am to get this christmas present. It got me siked for The World of Ice and Fire, The Winds of Winter and the new Dunk and Egg all at once.

However, and I know I'm asking much, a friend of mine didn't get to read the Theon-chapter you gave us last year. Arianne's new chapter has been put in it's place.

Is it possible to read that chapter online as of now?
I've seen it published as an extra chapter in the paperback version of A Dance with Dragons, but he and I already have the hardback, and as much as we love your books we can't really buy two versions of the same book.

You're an awesome writer and you've made me read again after many years of being sick and tired of it. I'm now reading the Wheel of Time saga after I read that Jaime vs Rand-battle sequence. Even though I spoiled myself a bit by reading that very sequence, it does not matter because the journey to those "spoilers" is written very well. A Song of Ice and Fire is still a bit better though, in my opinion.
I don't know if a Baratheon would say it like this but...

Yours is The Fury

Mathieu Thielemans

p.s.:I wrote this ten paragraph-long droolfest over the Theon chapter but decided not to post it because I'm sure by now you know how great a writer you are. Not trying to get that chapter, just saying you're a great writer
