The Wild Cards series does have its own internal chronology, yes. But we try to provide various entry points for new readers. You don't have to read every Superman comic since ACTION #1 to understand the Superman comic on the stands this month, and you should not have to read all the WC books that have gone before to enjoy "When We Were Heroes."
Some good entry points, for those wanting to get into the series for the first time, are WILD CARDS volume 1 (recently reissued in trade pb), INSIDE STRAIGHT (first of the 'new generation' books) and FORT FREAK (the most current volume, and first of a new triad).
