The World Is Mine

Morocco
My slow conquest of the world continues, nation by nation and language by language.

Just signed contracts for an Icelandic edition of Ice & Fire, the first time I'll be published in that language, and now my agent informs me that he's closed a deal for a Persian (Farsi) edition as well... a first for him as well as me.

WILD CARDS is marching on as well, with new deals for the first seven books in Mexico and Russia.

Promising news for the world of Ice and Fire. Must admit I'm a wee bit more excited for the Wild Cards translations, as I have been studying Spanish for the last three years and would like to try a crack at those works.

Yeesh, I'm going to have to check whether we support those languages. We added over a hundred options last year, but then somebody came along and pointed out half-a-dozen more we needed to add (I think he was working on every single version of "The Arabian Nights"). We mostly work in just a handful of Western European Languages still though, and all our help is English only for now. I still live in fear that Marc Okrand will join us and complain about the lack of "tlhingan" support - your agent hasn't been negotiating with any Klingons recently, I hope?

Congratulations!

(Though, as a Dutchman, I shudder at the thought of actually reading Ice & Fire books in my own native language... glad I can read some English.)

Yes the world is yours. You are the best (don't let it go to your head). It makes sense that Iceland should have its own edition since the HBO series is partially filmed there. Congrats!

Does the persian translation mean that it will be published in Iran? If so, that's very good news, leads to a more open world and all that. I wouldn't have expected it myself but obviously someone somewhere believes that the persian translation will sell, otherwise they wouldn't have invested in it.

Anyway, it's good that more people get the oportunity to read this fantastic series.

I was watching 'In the Mouth of Madness' last night, and this part reminded me of your post:

John Trent: Your books aren't real.
Sutter Cane: But they've sold over a billion copies. I've been translated into eighteen languages. More people believe in my work than believe in the Bible.

My husband and I were in Barcelona last summer and I was very excited to see a huge display of ASOIF books in Catalan at a bookstore inside the Sants train station.

(And being a professional translator myself, it just tickles my nerdy side to see my colleagues doing such a great job at bridging the language gaps to share such great writing!)

I was in Barcelona myself last summer. One of my favorite cities. The Ramblas, the old town, the cathedral, sangria, jamon, and my beautiful Spanish fans... (some with diresheep)...

It's gorgeous and the natives are some of the friendliest I've seen in a major city. Definitely one of our favorites as well. Nothing like sitting outdoors having genuine tapas and sangria without being hurried to leave by the waiter and without breaking the bank.

I have to say, though, some of the best sangria we had on our trip was in a place called Tarragona (about an hour by train outside of Barcelona). My husband and I are big history buffs and the Roman ruins in this place were incredible. If you are ever in the area again and haven't checked it out, we highly recommend it. And stop by La Casa del Vermut for a nice pitcher of sangria. :-)

Ho-ho-ho!
Alexander the Great is getting envy from the afterlife. A brand new empire from Island to Percy… And not only of course. Wonderful news indeed. Congratulations for the successful conquest!

Great news indeed! I look forward to seeing the covers, as well as the titles if the titles of your books are not 'directly' translated.

As an Iranian fan of your great work, I'm not thrilled about the news of Persian translation. Mainly because a book with incest and dictatorship and atheist characters will be butchered with censorship. Also because- sadly- fantasy is not considered serious enough by more able translators and most probably someone will translate it with a "Google Translate" level of literacy. (I'm sorry if that sounds too judgmental, but it's true).

Sweet! I can now read it in two languages!
I was born and raised in Iceland but have lived a majority of my life in the NYC/NJ area. It has been difficult to keep up with Icelandic especially when it comes to reading the language. Now I have real motivation to do it and I am very excited!

So, awesome news.
