It's cold in Iceland.
(Or so I hear. Never been there myself. Really need to rectify that).
Or so we're told, in the latest season 3 video from HBO:
Sad to say, I wasn't able to visit the shoot in Iceland for either season two or season three, but if we get a season four, maybe I can get over there this year.
I also want to stay at the Ice Hotel in Sweden. I must have Stark blood.

That's one thing I missed about North of the Wall in the TV series, no forests at all after Craster's Keep.
:)
The Rockies, mountains of British Columbia and Northwest Territoties are worthy of note. However when you venture North next, be sure to stop at the Nation's Capital of Ottawa, Ontario to make an appearance and indulge in some culture, food and drink, and friends. Our Winterlude occurs early Feb, and in October we feature and celebrate local craft beers.
Consider it 'research' - venturing North on this land mass, to gain inspiration for some Northern climates of YOUR land mass of Westeros ;)

Or maybe just then trees were higher and the sun shone brighter
And once in the north, I'd also recommend the Hurtigruten cruise (it's great off season; I did it in late March/early April and there were already several hours of daylight in the farthest north), visit the Viking museum in Oslo and the old town in Bergen, the cathedral in Trondheim (that one's part of the cruise, too) ... Gotland and Visby are worth a visit, too. But if I continue to list all _all_ the cool places in Scandinavia, you'll be there for three months and the fans will kill me. ;-)
I thought it would be fun to go to Iceland in August, because I had always heard that Iceland is actually unusally warm. I had not realized that they just meant "unusually warm for the latitude," meaning 60 degree his in the summer instead of 30 like the rest of the Arctic. So we went to Aruba instead.
There's a sad lack of skinchangers and wildlings, and the White Walkers haven't been seen for ages, but we do have wolves, bears, reindeer aplenty, dog sleds, aurora borrealis, and generally lovely cold winters. Try the Jokkmokk Winter Market; that's a 400-year old tradition and worth seeing.
As for the Ice Hotel, the local tip is "visit it, don't sleep in it".

*if*?? With the roll you and the production are on, I shudder to think what it wound take for there not to be a season four!
As an aside to George, if HBO doesn't complete your epic, I promise to write nasty letters... well, probably not, because as awesome the show is, their version of Westeros pales in comparison to your version of Westeros

So this may well be our second and already last season in Iceland !
Provided HBO sticks with the series, or course.
What do you mean if you get a season four????
I am sure Iceland is beautiful and has unique aspects, but I don't buy the "there is nothing like it"
In the town I used to live in, it is 30 degrees colder than in Reykjavik right now.
the record low is -45.7, where the record low is 39.7 for northern Ireland.
I think the coldest it was when I lived there was -35 with a windchill of nearly minus 50.
This is of course all in Celsius... you know, the temperature system that makes sense.
METRIC RULES. The maesters would agree.
I won't argue scenery one way or another, although there's a heck of a lot, but the fundamental landscape is unique.
Canada is no Iceland.
"You think it's cold out there? You know nothing George Snow!"
:)
