DVDs Set Sales Records

sword
Here I am talking about GAME OF THRONES in the Hugos, and I realize that I have forgotten to mention that season two has just been released on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Well, yes, it has. It went on sale Tuesday. There was even a Monday midnight madness event in NYC, at the Best Buy at Union Square (which I almost dropped in on, as I was on my way from Boston to DC at the time, but Certain People would not let me off the Acela). They had a direwolf ice sculpture and everything.

And the sets are selling sales records too, I am told. Says so here:

http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/02/22/game-of-thrones-dvd-sales-breaking-hbo-records/

HBO has done its usual bang-up job on these. Besides the episodes themselves, there's all kinds of extra goodies: audio commentaries, histories, interviews, round tables, deleted scenes, dragon's eggs. Also, several of the big retailers are offering special sets with exclusive content. The Best Buy sets have heraldic packaging and content no one else has, the Target boxes have stuff exclusive to Target, I think maybe there's some exclusive Amazon stuff too, not sure. (Yes, I can hear the obsessive completists groaning. I feel your pain, guys).

So if you haven't gotten your Blu-Rays yet, go ye forth and haul ye arse.

Just got the 2nd Season set ...
... and watched it in two nights. (I don't get HBO, so this was the first time.)

And now I've started with the commentaries.

I think I'll probably re-watch this stuff as much as I've done with The Wire and Deadwood. For Deadwood, I'm to the point of watching it in Spanish and French, w/English subtitles. By the way, there are no credits anywhere for those voice actors or the translators. Are there credits for those crews on GoT?

Oh, and seeing these episodes all in one go, I've noticed the real fantasy in this TV series: No matter how mud-spattered or starved, all the women have perfect skin, at least from the neck down, and no hair in any un-TV-approved places. (Not complaining, mind you.)

So for someone who's never heard of Game of Thrones now would be a less than perfect time to jump in or just the right time?

While you could try, the world is so massive and you find yourself overwhelmed. I will assume that you have HBO if you are considering "jumping in", HBO offers HBOGo online which will allow you to watch online old episodes. Of course, as good as the show is, the books really rock!

No, I don't have HBO, I don't even have cable TV at home. No time for television and I can't make myself spend money for cable access when I'm home and awake less than about 5 hours a day. If I want to watch something I have to actually make a deliberate effort to find it online or when I'm at the club and watch it.

NYC Midnight Event
Would have been awesome to see you at the midnight NYC release! That's too bad you couldn't make it. Any updates on writings you're currently working on? :)

Great to hear
That means the series is very popular, which in turn means that there will guaranteed be more seasons.

And in case you reply to questions; does the TV-show influence your writing on the remaning books in the series in any way, or give you new ideas? If it is, is the feedback a secret or something you can talk about?

Great news!
Glad to hear it's selling well, what with it being incredibly pirated - I remember reading about that 'round the summer. As can happen with DVD sets, as they are mass produced enough, there may some 'defects'. But HBO means quality, I doubt there has ever been any issues on *any* HBO release on either DVD or blu-ray. Kudos to HBO - series like Sopranos, Six Feet Under and Band of Brothers helped with 'tv on DVD', and the technical aspects on the episodes themselves are fantastic. Not to mention the extras.
I've been spreading the word and know of at least five people that have their sets now.

I ordered my copies of season 1 and 2 today, well before my bday on the 25th of March. Unfortunately I have to wait for season 3 to start, but it's worth the wait. March is going to be awesome. Looking foward to finding those hidden blu ray dragon eggs. :D

Wish you'd have been able to detrain and pop over! We had a blast, those hardy souls who braved the 25 degree temps for the duration especially so. Jason Yang's music, the Inn at the Crossroads' food and the camaraderie amongst the fen made the night something quite special.

Re: another book???
I can't answer for George, but I believe that there are two books left. How those will look is anybody's guess. BUT, if you want a hint of how they might end up start with "Everybody Dies!" and work backward from there. ;)

Re: another book???
Disaster might always strike, but it's been officially stated for a while now that the next book is "The Winds of Winter" and there will be at least one other after that (working title "A Dream of Spring") - personally I wouldn't be surprised if more than seven turn out to be needed. The description of the paperback version of "A Dance with Dragons" being released October 29 this year says it will include a preview chapter of "The Winds of Winter" at the back, as the previous paperbacks did for the books following them.

There are two sample chapters for "The Winds of Winter" available on GRR Martin's website, if you want to read them. And the Westeros forum has a subforum with threads summarizing sample chapters that GRR has read to audiences but that aren't available as web pages.

I can't include links without my comment getting caught in the journal's spam filter, but you can find links to all three places on the "The Winds of Winter" entry of A Wiki of Ice and Fire, which itself is easy to find by Googling.

Re: another book???
Don't worry...there are two books planned that we know of. Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, although it is a possibility that George could add another book (of that I do not know for sure). Either way, Mr. Martin has his work cut out for him as the first five were story telling masterpieces. From what I hear, the next book is supposed to be pretty massive. He is working on it, and in due time we'll see more of the story unfold.

Re: another book???
Yes, George is writing Book 6, which will be called THE WINDS OF WINTER. I'm sure when it's done, he'll let us know about it :)

Definitely "Pleased" from this side too! I know you've had other shows, and other books, and other stories. But I'm sure you must have a certain feeling of pride that your unfilmable story is out there kicking ass, in DVD land anyway (well, yes, the books too). There is, of course, more story to go which is awesome!

May HBO keep giving money to film this, is everyone's hope! :)

Ordered the Blu-Ray set as a birthday present for my father. The annoying thing is that when you open the shrinkwrap, the back cover of the set (where all the features are described, the runtime is given, etc.) turns out not to be glued to the rest of it. The back just comes away.

The 2nd season blu-ray came in the mail on Saturday. Although I don't have HBO I did get to see the episodes at my brother-in-law's when they first aired, but glad to have blu-rays of both season 1 & 2 now so I can watch the episodes over & over again whenever I want. Can't wait for March 31st!

My copy of Season 2 from Barnes and Noble has a nice canvas Stark sigil tote bag.

The exclusives I'm aware of are...
Target Exclusive Blu-Ray with an extra Blu-Ray disc containing an interview with George RR Martin.
Wal-Mart Exclusive Blu-Ray with an extra Blu-Ray disc containing "Inside the Visual Effects".
Best Buy Exclusive Blu-Ray with alternate Greyjoy or Lannister covers.
Barnes & Noble Blu-Ray or DVD comes with a beige Stark tote bag shrinkwrapped to it.
FYE Blu-Ray or DVD entitles one to a free poster (while supplies last).

I bought both the Target & Wal-Mart Blu-Ray versions because they had the exclusive content, but I'm very disappointed that they weren't also available on DVD. I don't at all like Blu-Ray and am still going to want to buy the DVD down the line, for the larger and nicer box that the DVD's come in. I wish that HBO had had more respect for DVD buyers when they negotiated their deals with Target, Wal-Mart and Best Buy.

I thought Seth McFarland did great as host.

Agreed with some winners, not so much with others.

Was very pleased to see Quentin Tarantino win. DJANGO UNCHAINED was a terrific movie.

So was ARGO... though, dammit, it should have been called LORD OF LIGHT, some mention should have been made of Roger and his novel.

I didn't know at all about the connection between ARGO and LORD OF LIGHT. I just got the back story from Wikipedia, though. Didn't see many movies last year, and ARGO wasn't one of them. May have to check it out now.

Positively jealous of all the show watchers out there; I can taste their anticipation. By the time HBO reaches the sixth season, I may cave and buy the DVDs.

Got mine through the mail, finished in 3 days! Pretty good, but took a little more liberties with the story/characters than the first season. I enjoyed your episode, especially intro showing cold, sick soldiers going to a siege, brilliant.
