Yeah. Looks like they're planning to make yet another adaptation. I'd liked to see that one with Stellan Skarsgård.

"The 1964 British-Yugoslav film The Long Ships is loosely based on the book. In the 1980s, there were plans for a large-scale Swedish screen adaptation. The film was supposed to be directed by Hans Alfredson and star Stellan Skarsgård as Orm and Sverre Anker Ousdal as Toke. The project was cancelled for financial reasons, but Alfredson's script was reworked into radio theatre which was broadcast in 1990. A comic adaptation by Charlie Christensen was published in four volumes between 2000 and 2004. In 2011 the Swedish production company Fladen Film announced they had acquired the film rights for the book, and that an adaptation was under development."

Bengtsson was pretty much an old school racist, Arthur de Gobineau - Houston Stewart Chamberlain style and anti-democrat, I'm told. Yet he was against the Nazis unlike many others back then. His magnum opus was about Swedish king Charles XII (Karl XII:s levnad) 1932, he never got the time to finish his doctorate. However, he made his thesis or dissertation on Thoreau's "Walden". Some praise his essays on the Merovingians. Had a good eye for madcap stories.

I'm a Finn, though, I might be biased. We were the same state for 600 years, the Swedes always used to fight to the last Finn before running off...
