Coming to Texas

I have a lot of readers in Texas, it would seem. Every time I make a book tour or attend a convention or blog about my travels to Europe or Australia or wherever, I get a rush of emails asking, "When are you coming to Texas?"

I can finally give the answer you Texans want to hear: I am coming to Texas NEXT WEEK.

I will be flying in on Thursday, March 21, to College Station, home of Texas A&M University, where my papers and manuscripts and such are all on deposit in Special Collections at Cushing Memorial Library. (A&M has one of the country's great SF and fantasy collections, a treasure trove for scholars of the genre). I'll be doing a reading, a signing, and speaking at a fundraising dinner, and many of my manuscripts and papers and collectibles will be on display.

DTS teaser

More information here: http://deeperthanswords.library.tamu.edu/

The library events, scheduled for March 21 and March 22, are all sold out, alas.

However, immediately after "Deeper Than Swords" comes AGGIECON, A&M's storied sf/fantasy convention. I am staying for that one as well, so if you miss me on Thursday and Friday, you can still catch me on Saturday and Sunday.

You can check out the Aggiecon details at http://cephvar.tamu.edu/aggiecon .

Sign up there or at the door. Besides me, Aggiecon 44 (I told you, this is an old and storied convention) will also feature Ernest Cline of READY PLAYER ONE fame, and a number of other great guests. Ty Franck (also known as the back half of James S.A. Corey) will be coming with me, Howard Waldrop says he'll be coming down from Austin, and some of my other Wild Cards writers may turn up too.

Last time I attended an Aggiecon it was... oh, I don't know, 1980 or thereabouts... but I have fond memories of past visits to A&M, most of them involving great Texas barbeque, too much bheer, pretty college girls, and Aggies in uniforms politely but firmly asking me to remove my hat. 'twill be interesting to see if any of that still applies. Somewhere in A&M's student union may be my lost youth... I know I had it the last time I visited...

And for those of you who can't make it to College Station... have no fear, I will be coming back to Texas again this year, for worldcon in San Antonio over Labor Day. It's too late to nominate for the Hugos now, but there's still plenty of time to sign up for LoneStarCon 3, and see them awarded.

HOWDY! I'm so excited you're coming to A&M!

I wanted to ask, will you be signing books at aggiecon? :D

Yes, though there will be limitations, depending on the length of the queue. In most of my recent signings, I have only done straight signatures, no inscriptions or personalizations... it's the only way to survive the crush. But if the con is small enough, I might be able to soften that policy. We shall see.

re: Aggiecon
Mr. Martin,

I called the lecture hall where you're scheduled to be speaking (and where the pre-screening of SE3EP1 is supposed to be shown) and apparently they're all out of seats. In addition, all other paid tickets have been sold out for a while.

I understand you may not be able to answer this, but if I wanted to get my book signed by you would it make more sense to try my luck on Friday or wait till Saturday or Sunday at Aggiecon? I ask because I live close enough to College Station that I could drive over for a days event, but not close enough that I would be able to attend all 3 days. I just don't want to show up on Friday and be told everything is full.

If you could recommend any option to get my copy of Storm of Swords and DwD signed I would definitely appreciate it, thanks!

Im gonna be there..
Driving in from Austin to see you there... Looking forward to the event.. I unfortunately couldn't spring for the Dinner the night before, but I hope that's good..

But the exhibit, the signing, the lecture, and screening of "Valar Dohaeris" will make for an amazing day.

While we are on the subject...
G'day George! So when are you coming to Perth, Western Australia? It's very nice hear and the perfect spot to do some writing, readings and book signings. I'll even come to any signings you do and buy an extra copy of DwD just for you to sign. Can't say fairer than that. The plane trip is quite long from the USofA so also another opportunity to finish a certain book. Thanks mate!

Will you be doing any events in San Antonio outside of LoneStarCon? My finances are such that I can't afford it, and I'd like to get a copy of Dance with Dragons signed to go with my other signed books. I am willing to bake you a batch of cookies!

Aggiecon 20
You last attended Aggiecon in 1989. Beauty & the Beast was a Big Deal. Octavia Butler was the other main GoH. That was my very first Aggiecon and I was working the dealer's room as a student. The hat issue caused us no small amount of distress, I assure you! ;-)

Incredibly Exciting
Mr. Martin,

As a former student of Texas A&M and proud lifelong Aggie (class of 1998)(former member of Cepheid Variable and worked many an Aggiecon) I am so excited you are coming back to Texas and my hometown of College Station (will be attending the dinner). Texas A&M has grown up a great deal since you were last here and we are honored to host your visit. I hope you find some great Texas BBQ and warm hospitality during your visit. I, for one, cannot wait!

update update! I know it's a drive, but I just maybe have secured a great house for a moot. its in the Austin hill country and used to be owned by the guy who created Ultima--one of his castles. the new owner and me did business together in the tabletop aqualogged calendar series back in my old auctioneer days. talk about niche market, there are people who'd sell their mother for one of those old aqua calendars.

will proceed through usual channels on westeros. if you thought that house was nice in LA, wait till you see this baby... the owner is a huge fan of Beauty and the Beast, hes got some collectibles and props from the show. also loves the HBO show, gotta get him to read the books now!!!1

Fantastic stuff served there.

Pictures during Friday signing?
Thank you for coming to Texas! We're really excited about your visit (and about getting our Known World map signed, if items other than books are allowed).

We have bought tickets for the signing on 3/22 and were wondering if photos will be allowed at that time. We've seen the restrictions on audio/video recording during the screening, but we'd love to get a picture (or even have a camera for personal use) during the signing. Do you know if this is possible? We'll try to check with the library if not. Thanks!

Re: Pictures during Friday signing?
A lot depends on the size of the crowd.

You can certainly snap a photo. But if we have a really big crowd, we can't do posed photographs, you just have to snap on the run.

Small crowd, all the rules get relaxed.

not related to the topic, just whanted to say thanks
Dear, Mr. Martin! i've read your game of thrones series of books and i'm absolutely fascinated and compelled by the story. obviously, i can't say anything new to you. but i think the way you write is incredible. no too long diversions, gripping plot and ABSOLUTELY unexpected development of the plot. most books and writers are predictable and you always know that good guys will eventually win, but with your books you never know... and, to tell the truth, you keep killing my favourite characters, even those i "love to hate"..... but that's kind of refreshing)))) thanks again for your work, and i'm looking forward for the continuation.
P.S. you are a genius)

Well then.
Eh, Baylor would have been a better (not that biased... Not at all). Oh well, hopefully some other time. I'm still a relatively new fan (about to start the last one that is out), but I would still would absolutely love it Mr. Martin would be able to come to North Texas (Baylor would be perfect, but the whole DFW would be great as well). One can dream... And not necessarily about being a wizard either.

Great meeting you in Aggieland
It was great meeting you at the Cushing Library during the signing! All be it for only 30 seconds at most. Was hoping for a tiny bit more time at the signing table but alas your handlers were keeping that line moving at warp speed. Thank you for the signatures on my ADwD and my GoT RPG Deluxe Ed.

I do hope you will enjoy the Atlas of the Dragonlance World book and will hopefully understand my letter detailing the reason for the book and the references within. I believe it offers some great examples for a future ASOIAF atlas project that the fans, ASOIAF scholars and gamers would love. If we had more time I would have been better able to explain myself as I'm sure my short attempt at an explanation came out extremely jumbled in the rush.

I also very much enjoyed the lecture and the insight you gave us on your inspiration from literature. The explanation on the different levels of technology dependent upon geographical location also gave some much needed insight on the different cultures. I thought the part about how knights were the tanks of their time was also very helpful for those fans that are not historians. Thank you for the experience and best of luck on the ever increasing "To Do" list. Thanks again and Gig'em!
