The Beast

Here's another taste of Season 3, courtesy of HBO.

Me, I am off tomorrow for the Hollywood premiere on Monday night. Should be cool.

Maybe it will help me forget all the stress I have been under of late... too many damn deadlines, all of them urgent... sigh... someday I will have time to stop and smell the roses, kick the severed heads... but not now...

Starting tomorrow it is LA LA LA SF TX TX TX TX and then home... where all the work and all the deadlines will be waiting for me, along with a pile of mail three feet high and maybe a thousand new emails...

Yes, Greatness comes with a price ser Martin. If and When you come to NY to visit your old haunts (or Peter), please permit me to give you a hug!
Hang in there!!! No breakdowns, please!

I second that. I commented after only watching the video, not GRRM's message below it. :( Brilliant writer or not, too much on the go will wear anyone down and out. Take care, GRRM! Your fans appreciate your hard work :)

Should rethink being a genius then. Comes with the territory... ;)

I, on the other hand, am not a genius and have 20 pages of literature analysis due on Friday. Instead, I've been re-watching these trailers ad infinitum. Luckily, I graduate in May and the first thing I'll do with my free time is reread all of ASOIAF. Currently on TUF VOYAGING now and I enjoy it quite a bit, but 20 pages due on Friday, so...

Good luck to you and I hope you meet your deadlines! (No, not so I can read your material faster, well, not solely... but so you'll be less stressed!)

As much as every fan of your works, and especially the die hard ASOIAF fans (including myself) will hate me for this message. I have to say it George for the love of god take a vacation to the Bahamas or something nice and just RELAX for a few days. If anyone needs it its you. And who are we kidding here, your GRRM YOU set the deadlines.

Oh I love you, I beg you!!!! Please come to Monterrey, Mexico (it's not so far from Houston) and we have a comic convention twice a year where you will be much apreciated. :)

Thank you for all the epicness and for Tyrion!

Looking forward to some Stannis. Here and TWoW as well
Mar. 17th, 2013 11:02 am (UTC)
George! Please remember that you are allowed to say "No!" Stop and enjoy life while you still have the years to enjoy them!

I guess this is probably all a thrill ride, but still, I hope you will slow down.

Yes, even if that means waiting on the next book. I will wait, I promise. <3
Mar. 17th, 2013 11:27 am (UTC)
Living the high life George! And we love you for all the hard work you do.

Argh! I can't wait for this next season! I think they did a great job matching actors to your characters. Book 3 is my favourite so far. Very excited!!!
Mar. 17th, 2013 01:54 pm (UTC)
Trailer only serves to whet the appetite further.

Sad to hear of the stress levels though, George. What with this post and your 'power out' entry, sounds like you've a ton on your plate.

Are the deadlines self-imposed or those of your masters?
Mar. 17th, 2013 02:39 pm (UTC)
oh, beautiful:)
but, ser, take a short rest. one year waiting more or less can be accepted so long as you can work in a relaxed mood...
Mar. 17th, 2013 02:46 pm (UTC)
Enjoy it all, George.
Take your time. Hurry up. Choice is yours. Don't be late. :)
Mar. 17th, 2013 04:48 pm (UTC)
Chin Up

Not a nice word.

Still, chin up. IMO a good writer (a sparky, creative) writer is a rested, happy, relaxed writer. Which means you have a solemn duty to stay happy, relaxed, thankful, healthy …

I would advise focussing as much as possible on the one project that most of your readers are most bothered about, but, sorry, I know it just isn't that simple.

Keep up the good work and THANK YOU – the effort is appreciated!

Free Meals?
I hope you go to some swanky restaurants and discuss Fevre Dream with agents and the anonymous director.
Mar. 17th, 2013 09:34 pm (UTC)
If this show gets any better, all the others are just going to give up :D

Never thought I could love something more than Star Wars, but GOT is a definite contender for the crown

Summer Isles
I would suggest that when you can, take a week to go to the Summer Isles, Belize would be my choice, and kick your feet up! They have this fantastic rum called 1 Barrel (best drank out of a coconut) that will help you relax, I promise. They even speak english down there. Also, thank you for creating all of these wonderful worlds for people to escape to. I know that when I'm stressed out, I pick up one of your novels and escape the real world, so thank you for helping with my stress. Keep up the hard work and thank you!

So I wear a drool guard around my neck now. They don't want it on my keyboard at work. Everyone thinks I had a stroke, but it's just DAS. That'd be "Dragon Anticipation Syndrome."

March 31: A Family Affair
I just wanted to say thanks for this! I have been a "Book" fan for many years and was thrilled when you announced that HBO would be making a series out of it and a little worried just to be honest. I was afraid that a TV series wouldn't be able to do you or the books justice. I, of course, was so very pleased when the series turned out so wonderfully. My entire family watches it including my husband who isn't a lover of fantasy or a reader of books. They all keep bugging me with "Is he going to die?" Or will she/he kill this or that person. My response is always the same, Don't get attached to anyone!" Anyway, I just truely wanted to say thank you.

I don't know if you've seen this...but fun
Mar. 18th, 2013 09:12 am (UTC)
could anybody explain for non-American - what does "TX" mean? Texas or what?
Mike Halcomb
Mar. 19th, 2013 02:00 pm (UTC)
Each state in the US has an official two letter abbreviation. TX is Texas. Mine is OK for Oklahoma, from which I shall be sweeping down the plains this weekend to see George in TX!

why so many projects?
I can understand why less successful authors need to take on many projects in order to support themselves. However, given the success of Song of Ice and Fire and the TV series, I am sure you don't have to.

Do you just like working on lots of different things? I can understand that. However, if it causes so much stress I don't see the point. I have a hunch that Ty would be pretty good at saying no for you.
Mar. 18th, 2013 03:53 pm (UTC)
Success is Fleeting
[From the Chorus] Success is fleeting, Mr. Martin.
Enjoy the ride while you are on it! Someday, you may be looking back fondly on how busy you were during the height of your success. Hopefully, you'll be comfortably retired by then! Cheers!
Mar. 18th, 2013 04:52 pm (UTC)
What are you doing in SF?
Will you be appearing somewhere?

Bay Area fans would like to know.

Bad times will pass
George, I constantly have to fight with deadlines too, so I can totally understand how depressive these times can be.
I wish you good spirits and may you find the strength to overcome these hard days. They will certainly pass, I just hope they won't take a heavy toll on you

Might you, maybe, possibly, be making an appearance at Wondercon while you are in Los Angeles? And I second hockey_99999. Would it be possible to know what you're up to in San Fran? Just out of curiosity.

Thank you
Hi Mr Martin.

There's little chance you'll ever read this comment, and there's even a smaller chance you might answer, so we'll be quick.

This is a "group message" from french 15-25 years old students, with a passion for writing. The Song of Ice and Fire series basicaly changed our lives, in so many ways. We really wanted to thank you for that.

Also, we know an incredible amount of people want you to finish the series as fast as you can. We want you to know that thoses are only the crazy ones. There's a whole lot of people who just want you to take your time. You must be happy to tell us that story, not stressed, tired or grumpy from hysteric fan reactions.

So don't listen to the mad people. There are thoses out there who will happily wait 15 years for the Winds of Winter. We trust you, and we know you'll do your best.

Thank you so much for every tale you've told. Good luck.
Mar. 19th, 2013 01:30 pm (UTC)
Ohh, wonderful shivers when seeing Beric Dondarrion set his sword aflame! Should be a great scene, that one.
This season'll be so awesome! I look forward to the development of Jaime's character as well, which really took off in SoS. I hope he and Brienne click as much on TV as they do in the books, as I felt that relationship really helped in his character development.
Mar. 19th, 2013 02:21 pm (UTC)
Boy, this is shaping up to be stellar season, already looks like a solid grade A. Can't wait until book five makes it to the Home Box Office small screen.
Mar. 19th, 2013 07:15 pm (UTC)
Awesome trailer, can hardly wait for the new season!!!!

I hope you have fun in Texas, and can de-stress somewhat.

Best wishes, as always!
Mar. 20th, 2013 01:17 am (UTC)
Thank you =)
Came here to get your email address but reading your 'not-a-blog', I see you may not appreciate that so well!

But I have been a big fan of the books even before the HBO series and I am slowly working my way through the Season 2 dvd. Slowly, so it can be savored.

You have created a wonderful world, and I hope you aren't ready to give up on it yet. And just saying, if you wanted to make it longer than 7 books... maybe 10 books.. I at least, one humble fan, will eagerly await each one! =)

Travel -- Ughhh!
Sorry you're on the road, but the premier should at least bring a smile or six. When you're back in the Sangre de Christos, I have contact information for a wonderful, scale-model builder of castles, right in Santa Fe! Good friend of our family and a real artist in her work. Enjoy the premier and survive the travel.

Much gushing
New to discovering your work (sadly, not new to life at 58 LOL). Wanted to thank you for the wonderful world you created. You've captured my love of fantasy and history perfectly.

I told my husband that GoT reminded me of the War of the Roses in many respects. I even called the Lannisters Lancaster for a while. You seem to have captured the spirit of European history in your story while adding a touch of magic.

I have only watched the HBO series at this point but have the book set on order. I have NO idea how I've missed it so long! My husband and I haven't watched much TV (or done much besides run our business for many years) and assume that is how I missed this treasure. This will soon be rectified.

I wondered if the idea behind the Forest people might be the Irish Tuatha Dé Danann?

Have you seen the youtube vids of a lovely girl in Australia named Karliene? Here's a link to a couple in case you haven't had that opportunity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2l7wzOaODYQ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAsCt4GF6WU She is having vocal medical issues but I hoped you'd get the chance to enjoy these.

Again, many thanks for this wonderful delight and I am looking forward to more in both media.

PS While I write fanfiction for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandom (something not only acceptable to but actually encouraged by Joss Whedon) I fully understand and respect your stand regarding fanfic for your creations. I'd never presume. One day I will publish my original works and would not want them tampered with either.

Smell the roses, kick the severed heads....

Please Ser, go ahead and get yourself to an island and hide away for a while. Relax, recharge, and enjoy your life. In any case, you know you might have to do so by the end of Season 3 ;)
We'll all still be here.
Mar. 22nd, 2013 03:39 pm (UTC)
winter is coming ... in spring
So we just had the premiere of Season 3 in Seattle at the fabled Cinerama Theater with some members of the cast, and this morning, just north of the city, we have snow. In spring.
Thanks a lot, George.

Deadlines ... ugh.

I can understand how you feel right now, the pressure of the show, last 2 remaining books, Dunk and Egg series and facing lots and lots of love.(or maybe some criticism, but I highly doubt that) But at least you are busy by something which is your own creation and obsession of many. That' something very few people have the advantage of.

Take care.
Saw the words "tired" and stress" - please don't let it all get to you. I'm sure most of the GOT series' devoted fans would rather you took your time and led a balanced, happy life. What's the rush, anyway? We'll still be eagerly awaiting the final installments, regardless of whether you choose to take another 20 years to finish. And thank you, we love you.
Mar. 26th, 2013 03:40 pm (UTC)
Re: Take care.
Totally agree!! We just want you to led a happy & healthy life so you can write your story as you envisioned, even if it takes another 20 years. We will be here!!

I hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip Mr. Martin! I hope you can enjoy the Game of Thrones season 3 premeire in the comfort of loved ones!

can't wait for the show!!! I hope you get some rest in between all the cool stuff (and deadlines.) I just read an interview where you mention some cool Mexican food. yum. sounds better than my disgusting 'green drink' I had for lunch.

Mar. 26th, 2013 02:30 am (UTC)
Mr. Martin,

There must be one character or two that you had in your mind completely different from the actor they cast for the role. What happens then? Do you feel betrayed? Do you give up what you had imagined and go along with who they did cast?

Clive Mantle got his ear bitten off. Newcastle Hotel parties are as dangerous as Westeros feasts it seems.

Deadlines are meant to be extended. I'd rather see great work over time than it rushed. Take your time and continue to blow us away...
Mar. 26th, 2013 08:26 pm (UTC)
hang in there George. You've got a lot of people rooting for you out there. "Some of mankind's best work has been done under unrealistic deadlines" (made up quote)

Totally irrelevant but re watching and had another laugh from this line..

Grand Chief
I'd like to see George R. R. Martin in a very short scene, for example of elders council head, remembering the eccentric British director Alfred Hitchcock. Truly would be great in that role.
