Season Four!!!

Spain
HBO has officially renewed GAME OF THRONES for a fourth season. (And I'm almost finished with the first draft of my script. No, sorry, not going to tell you which one it is).

Record ratings for our season three premiere, "Valar Dohaeris."

Also (sigh) record levels of piracy.

On other topics... no, no, Peter Dinklage is NOT being replaced by Warwick Davis in the role of Tyrion. That was just HBO's little April Fools joke. (I was so busy I forgot to make my own April Fools joke). So calm down, boys and girls. Peter is still with us.

Season 4 is going to be mostly ASoS material, so that is still more a season 5 question now.

HBO can't afford to put 50% of the cast on retainer for a whole year without using them. So I think the answer to that is no, they will reintegrate AFFC and ADWD onto the same timeline and do some restructuring to get coherent seasons of television out of them (finding good end-points from the books to end the seasons on etc).

Based on where we know (or think we know) where S3 ends, it seems unlikely that S4 will be 'just' the remaining part of ASoS (and from the sound of it S3 will be more like 2/3s of ASoS, not just half). OTOH, there are events in the back half of ASoS that make for excellent climax and season-finale moments, and would feel weird dropped in as Episode 4 or 5. I suspect we're going to see Dan and Dave getting really creative with the timelines in Season 4, and some events from ASoS dropping back to the end of the season and maybe some events from the start of AFFC and ADWD brought forwards.

Season 4 is definitely where the writers are probably going to start getting more headaches than previously :)

Season 4 may give headaches, but I expect it will have nothing on Season 5 or 6, should we get them. Set aside the momentum issue and you have the reality that the story of SoIaF has yet to settle down; it keeps expanding and expanding, with a whole slew of new characters and plot lines introduced between AFFC and ADWD.

Attempting to avoid spoilers, can the show actually manage to cast all the people it would need for the Dhornish plot line? Or the Ironborn and their Kingsmoot? What about the motley band of people who wander in and out of Tyrion's path in ADWD? Dany's assorted hangers-on?

They've already got (I believe) the largest cast on TV and yet, unless they decide to cut plot threads that will likely have an enormous impact on the last two books, it will have to grow larger and larger still. I don't envy them trying to make it work.
