Dark Sword Strikes Again

tyrion
My friends at Dark Sword Miniatures in Minnesota have released some terrific new figures in their range of Ice & Fire miniatures.

Here's Strong Belwas, sculpted by the incomparable Tom Meier and painted by the amazing Jen Haley.

And here's his travelling companion, Arstan Whitebeard, who may be more than he seems. Another Tom Meier sculpt, another Jen Haley paintjob.

The latest batch of "GRRM Masterworks" also includes Ser Jorah Mormont, Lady Margaery Tyrell, two new ladies of the court, and a battling brother of the Night's Watch, all by Tom Meier, and Balon Greyjoy of Pyke, sculpted by Jeff Grace. To see them all, and lots of other cool minis besides, visit Dark Sword's own website at http://darkswordminiatures.com/

Strong
"Strong Belwas hungry!" He cried out to everyone, and no one in particular.

Love the miniatures!!!

Re: Strong
There's something incongruous about Strong Belwas's defined "Arnold" arms and his man-boobs.

Re: Strong
If you ever spend much time watching Strongman competitions, you'll see people that look a lot like (this sculpture of) Belwars.

Re: Strong
Fat guys can be strong, of course. But I don't recall ever seeing arms this defined on the same body as a fatty chest. Just an observation.

Since the revelation of Ser Barristan Selmy came without the intervening Arsten deception, I'm assuming that there will be no Strong Belwas in the series.

That's sad. I really wanted to see Strong Belwas outside the walls of Meereen.

OK, now maybe I can settle something that has been confusing me.

Is the weapon Strong Belwas is holding in fact an arakh?

If so, it appears that he is holding it with the curve backwards, relative to the strike motion.

This is backwards of how I envisioned it being used - based on the books, I thought it was curved forward relative to the strike motion, with the cutting edge on the inside of the curve.

However, this interpretation never made sense to me as a cavalry weapon. I horseman wants a blade that curves away from his strike motion, like a scimitar or katana. That way, the edge slides across the foe but the point does not get stuck. Using the arakh from horseback with the curve and point forward seems like an invitation to get the tip stuck in the foe, which probably means the weapon is wrenched from your hand.

In short, the apparent depiction of Belwas makes more sense, militarily, but conflicts with what I thought I understood from the books and the movies.

So, which direction is right? Or is the weapon sharp on both sides, and used in different ways depending on whether one is on foot or horseback?

Strong Belwas
Hi, George, i have a doubt about the Game of Thrones series, is Belwas the Strong going to appear in the show? I guess he is a great character and should be there, I´ve stayed a little upset when I saw the first episode of the third season and he wasn´t with Barristan.

Re: Strong Belwas
I am afraid not. The show cannot possibly include all the characters who appear in the books, so cuts have had to be made.

Re: Strong Belwas
ahh it is a pity. I saw a fella on the Spartacus Series who would have been perfect. Being that he was killed a few episodes ago he certainly would have been available during the shooting of GOT. and he so closely matches the description of Belwas, though his man boobs were more muscle than boob he could have pulled it off.

Anyways thanks for taking the time to answer a few fans. and if you could enlighten us, which episode did you pen this season? (if it has been asked already apologies)

Re: Strong Belwas
Then I really look forward to this episode!
The writers deviate from the books too much for my liking and it drives me so nuts. The two episodes by GRRM are the best ones, so I'm sure this one will be great as well! Oh, do I dare ask... bear pit??! :D!!!!

Castings?
Hii!

First of all I want to thank you so much for Game of Thrones. I look forward to the next episode!
But I have one question. I am 19 years old and from Sweden and I was just wondering... Will you have any casts for new characters and if so is the case... Is there any way you can try out for a role? I do a lot of acting and I am very intrested!

Here's my mail if you want to answer: freiheit94@live.se

(Sorry for my bad english, hehe)

Love from a huge fan/Felicia Johanneson

Re: Castings?
Hey there, Felicia. I have also been trying to get involved with the show for a long time, but you somehow need to get Nina Gold's casting department to pay attention to you - which isn't easy, I can tell you.

I've been acting professionally for 9 years and (without meaning to blow my own trumpet) am the lead in a feature film, yet I've still never even had the opportunity to audition for the show - it seems they only use actors from a selection of agencies. I have been proactive and put together my own audition video (which OTHER casting directors have contacted me about), but even doing that doesn't guarantee anything (I can't say whether it's helped me at all - and even George himself said in an interview recently that putting together your own audition video isn't necessarily the right way to go about it)! It's a very tough industry, so I wish I could suggest more, but sadly, there's a lot of luck involved! Just do what you can and try to be as proactive as possible.

Good luck with it all anyway and feel free to add me on facebook - as it's always good to keep in touch with other up-and-coming actors.

lol interestingly that is always more or less how i pictures strong belwas... i could never really picture darkstar... i know he's been a minor character in the series but id like to see a miniature take on that anti-hero bastard

Is Belwas the Strong going to appear in the series? He is one of the best
characters in the Daenerys circle.

Their work is stunning!! (I just checked out Cersei's miniatures!) Is every miniature hand painted??!!? Jen Haley & Marike Reimer are just astonishing in their skill, not to mention the sculptors' work!!!

Hi there. Thanks for the kind words on our GRRM Masterworks Pewter Miniature range.

The miniatures come bare pewter and are not painted. This is where the hobby aspect of collecting pewter miniatures comes into play as people can paint them up however they see fit. Or they can simply collect them as unpainted little sculptures.

It is a wonderful hobby (as George himself will tell you) and alot of fun collecting these little miniature works of art.

These are all hand-sculpted by some of the top miniature sculptors in the world in true scale (no 3 up models that are then shrunk down). No computer generated models here folks. This is old school artisan type stuff. The molds are hand cut and the casting is done by a live human as opposed to a machine as each miniature has its own naunces for casting and such.

Thanks!

Jim

ever consider adding an Asian to your a song of ice and fire books ? lol ! just kidding ! still a huge fan :) ur the only reason why i sign up for the site thing so i can keep up with you and your news and talk to you. and see how you Twow is coming along, no rush..and to see if you going to bring back drogo with dany or not, still a very fun book to read ! i enjoy the reading more than watching, but i love how they bring the characters to life ! they should have made it into a movie instead kind of like harry potter, but harry potter is more like a pussy version of GOT , and GOT is more the R rated bad ass version like adult harry potter , cant even be compare together cuz GOT kick ass !

Strong Belwas
This is the most upsetting thing to happen to me in terms of GoT. Was so looking /spoilers/ forward to Belwas's duel. That duel can only be replaced by Selmy, but he wont defecate to complete the moment.
