LOWBALL Done & Delivered

ape
Another monkey off my back...

This time it is a hideous mutant joker monkey. LOWBALL, the twenty-second volume in the ongoing Wild Cards series of shared world anthologies and mosaic novels, is finally complete, and has been delivered to our editors at Tor.

The lineup this time:
“The Big Bleed,” by Michael Cassutt, starring STUNTMAN,
“Those About to Die,” by David Anthony Durham, starring INFAMOUS BLACK TONGUE,
“Galahad in Blue” by Melinda Snodgrass, starring FRANCIS XAVIER BLACK of the NYPD,
“Ties That Bind” by Mary Anne Mohanraj, starring MICHAEL STEVENS of the NYPD,
“Cry Wolf” by David D. Levine, introducing THE CARTOONIST,
“Road Kill” by Walter Jon Williams, starring GORDON THE GHOUL,
“Once More, for Old Time’s Sake” by Carrie Vaughn, starring EARTH WITCH, CURVBALL, DRUMMER BOY, and JOHN FORTUNE,
“No Parking… “ by Ian Tregillis, starring RUSTBELT.

Special thanks this time around to Melinda Snodgrass, who stepped in heroically to help with the editing on this one when I was being crushed beneath the weight of other deadlines. I could not have pulled this puppy together without her.

LOWBALL will likely be released by Tor in hardcover in summer, 2014. More details when I have 'em. Our main man, Michael Komarck, is already hard at work on another spectacular cover.

YAY!!

I'm starting a friend on the series so I'm glad to know I can keep her hooked for even longer!

I wonder what is involved with such an editing job? How much work is it?

It's a LOT of work.

Editing a mosaic like Wild Cards is about ten times as much work as editing an original anthology of stand-alone stories, like WARRIORS or DOWN THESE STRANGE STREETS.

Editing an original anthology is about ten times as much work as editing a reprint anthology.

And editing a reprint anthology is about ten times as much work as editing a Hugo or Nebula anthology. Those are like editing fish in a barrel.

I would think editing fish in a barrel would be rather difficult.

Quite honestly, were I to edit fish a barrel sounds like the best location to get it done. They are slippery, and the two-handed fish snatch is harder than it looks.

Ah, but it's always the fish at the bottom that need editing.

Congrats on another monkey off your back! Hopefully there is fewer and less of them these days, compared to this time last year.

I haven't tried editing...yet. Also, I've pushed my short story back a bit because my own main series is going quite well - keep an eye out for a short story by me called NETHERWORLD (under 'Jeffrey R. Hawboldt') in Asimov's. I'll be submitting in October sometime. If it doesn't get published, I won't give up.

I already can't wait for this.
Time to once again start lobbying my masters at Tor.com to let me do a Wild Cards reread...

Knowing how much work editing a normal anthology of original fiction is, I can't even imagine how much cat-herding goes into something as intricate as the Wild Cards series. :) My hat to you!

After reading your short story "The Monkey Treatment", I can't ever look at the phrase "monkey off my back" the same way again! Congrats on the successful completion of your editing =] I'm looking forward to checking it out!

The tenacity, voracity, and sheer audacity of Ms. Snodgrass never ceases to amaze. Without her drive and dedication the pulp literary world would not have Wild Cards, among other things, like arguably the greatest ST:TNG episode where Bruce Maddox calls Data's sentience into question and puts him on trial.

Am I correct that Lowball is the middle book of a three book Wild Cards contract with Tor? If that is the case, then isn't another Mighty Joe Young about to land mid-way up the GRRM spinal column?

Hey Mr Martin, I was wondering what you thought of the "Mereenese Knot" joke in episode three. I thought it was an awesome nod to book readers. Pretty clever stuff.

Re: copyright ??
I have some licenses that predate the HBO deal and have been grandfathered in -- Fantasy Flight Games, Dark Sword Miniatures, Green Ronin Press, Valyrian Steel, Mystic Spiral Traders, Shire Post Mint, etc.

The only authorized t-shirts are from HBO and its licensees, and Mystic Spiral Traders and their licensees.

Re: copyright ??
yes sir. that what i was thinking too, i thought only HBO and you can sell your products or ideas, i dont think it is right for people to be stealing something of your without your permission even if i do love that moon of his life shirt a lot. HUGE FAN HERE!! but still, i think if someone is trying to make money of your ideas and creations, they should go through you first. i think you should go to HBO or let them know about this. because this is not right. but it is up to you. and i agree with you, i hate fan fiction too. because it is your story and your creation, they should let you handle it and not force it upon you. they are free to write but do not force on you. i mean i would love ! for khal drogo to come back to life, but that is all up to you. because i believe in your story and i believe whatever you have plan for it will be great :)

A Dance With Dragons -- Astonishing NYT Run Continues
A Dance With Dragons continues to dance on the New York Times Hardcover bestseller list.

I have a database going back to 1977 that calculates the score of every book that has appeared on the Hardback list for every week since and including 1977 to today's published list. The scale is calculated from the top down. A #1 place gets 15 points, #2 gets 14 points, and so on down to #15, which receives 1 point.

After running my calculation script today...

A Dance With Dragons has notched up one more slot on the list, passing Like Water For Chocolate, to #19. Here's the top 50:

1 The Da Vinci Code
2 The Bridges Of Madison County
3 The Celestine Prophecy
