NFL Draft

Round two of the NFL Draft kicks off in about an hour. Rumors are flying on the sports sites that the Jets are trying to trade up from the seventh slot to draft a QB. Boy, I sure hope not. None of the QBs available this year impress me as being much of an upgrade over Sanchez and Garrard. Maybe if one fell into their laps in, say, the third round... but in the second? When the team desperately needs help at so many positions? And trading UP to get him, which means giving up a lower round pick? That would be as foolish as trading away Revis.

The Jets flourished when Rex could run a ground-and-pound O. They have lost Shonn Greene, their starting RB. They should stay where they are and take the RB out of Alabama if he's still there at seven.

And don't get me started on the first round picks. All the mock drafts had the Jets getting Mingo and Austin at #9 and #13 in the first round. Wrong and wrong. The Browns took Mingo, and the the Rams traded up into the #8 slot ahead of the Jets to get Tavon. Once more, another team drank our milkshake.

Let us not compound the problems by chasing any of these QBs. Not one of them is a sure thing. Give me Eddie Lacy instead, and bring back the ground-and-pound. Sanchez plays best with play action, and that requires a strong ground game.

Not a word about the Big Blue Machine?

Re: Giants?
They picked a guard.

He seems to be a good guard. I hope he'll be the next Snee.

Re: Giants?
I'm pretty excited about him. He looks like a good kid, and he'll have a lot of mentors on the O-line. If he matures into the pros well, he'll be the kind of player we never really notice because he's always doing his job right.

must create competition
Sanchez might just play a little better with an actual prospect breathing down his neck, though. Not Tebow and not McElroy. I know you are probably done with USC QB's but Barkley is pretty close to NFL ready and could be an efficient game manager. Not sexy by any means but those Chad Pennington days seem pretty fond now don't they? lol. Also Geno is an elite athlete. He is no Cam or RG3 but is still capable of making plays. Finally Ryan Nassib may be worth a look. Like you say there are no "can't miss" QBs but if the Jets want to rebuild a young QB isn't a bad way to go. Lacy is a nice RB but I don't see him elevating the Jets to where they need to be.

The Jets do need some kind of help on Offense. I don't get how Rex is supposed to be some hot shot defensive coach but they didn't go for O at all on day 1. Maybe so he has no excuses when they go to fire him next season?

Seriously though Fluker at #9
Tackles were flying off the board! As an eagles fan Lane Johnson was a great pick for us.

Seriously thought the Jets would taken Fluker after Austin was off the board. Rex made it no secret they were eyeing up Austing.

Could have followed up and taken Desmond Trufont at 13 and it really not being a reach.

Just my opinion.

Lacy would be a great pick for you guys.

Justin Pugh, the guy the Giants picked, went to a rival of my high school (I'm a couple years older than him, though). I've never heard anything but great things about him as a person.

I'm an Eagles fan, pretty happy with our pick. He should fit what Chip Kelly likes to do.

As a Cowboys fan... I envy the Giants in this case because they don't have Al Davis....I mean Jerry Jones calling the shots. Two Pints of Dorish Red to being a punching bag again this year.

Eddie Lacy
I like Eddie Lacy, but there are rumors his medical evaluation didn't look good. Those rumors may be real or just misinformation to get him to drop further.

Core of the Jets is where they have to focus. That means selecting guys who won't get the cheers on draft day, but are critical on Sundays. The Jets two first round picks seemed to follow that philosophy. Milliner isn't Revis, and no one should be pretending he is, but he's pretty solid. I happen to think they got a pretty decent d-lineman.

Jets should stay put. There's good value in this round at a ton of positions. Trading up would be a mistake.

Ground v air
I don't think that it's possible to have a good offense in the NFL right now without a decent passing game. The Jets were flourishing because of their very strong defense and ability to make offensive plays at least often enough to win.

Geno Smith

Re: You have Geno!
We have Geno.

No one to throw the ball to, though. No one to run the ball.

But we have five QBs. Sanchez, Garrard, McElroy, Tebow, and now Geno. Wait till Rex unveils his revolutionary five QB offense!

Re: You have Geno!
If they give Geno the proper year or two to be coached up, and let Sanchez or whoever wins the qb spot lead the jets to another average record (at best), another pretty good year or two of draft picks should give the jets enough to work with for a rebuild around Geno.

This is my optimistic take on taking a projected first round QB in the 2nd round without trading up. Not really that bad at all. No real point in drafting a RB in early rounds this year.

Re: You have Geno!
Long time/First time.....(Btw love ASOIAF)Also long suffering jet fan...let's not forget we also have matt sims....6 QB's....

But of course they pick the guy who has been on espn allllllllll day, because what this team needs is more bad publicity for a dubious at best pick.... So we have 6 faux qb's now and I read they're going to cut the one that we have to pay anyway...

I pray to the seven.

Though 9th pick would have been Fluker
as an Eagles fan Lane Johnson was a great pick for us. The run on OT was quick and furious.

I would have thought after Austin was gone that Fluker would have been the Jets pick. Follow by Desmond Trufont at 13.

But now this bomb with Geno Smith in the 2nd. Wow!
Apr. 26th, 2013 11:16 pm (UTC)
I'm sorry.
Really. Geno Smith was the incorrect pick.
Apr. 26th, 2013 11:24 pm (UTC)
Look on the bright side...the Chargers snagged Te'o, so that's one less misstep for the Jets to make.
Apr. 26th, 2013 11:42 pm (UTC)
Re: Te'o..
Te'o would have been better. They could use an inside linebacker. Hell, they could use everything. It's a rebuilding year, and Geno Smith has done nothing to indicate he's an upgrade over Sanchez. I think Sanchez sucks, but he sure wasn't getting much help from the rest of the team.

You rebuild this year, you take a QB next year. Plain and simple.

They got your milkshake and handed you a waterskin full of horse piss... and the Jets keep chugging it!

What was that about not chasing a QB?
Sorry, George... at least Geno Smith came into the draft as the consensus top QB on the board? It may actually serve to bring some clarity to the position by the time the season starts, since there's no way Gang Green will actually carry Sanchez, Tebow, Garrard, and Smith on their 53-man roster.

5 qb system
I'm sorry my Browns took your Mingo, but with a name like Barkevious, I think we can agree he's better suited to play in front if the Dawg pound.

As for your 5 QB's, I think you could start Sanchez at qb, Geno at RB, and Tebow at FB, and specialize in triple option hb passes... It'd be entertaining if not successful.

And now you got Chris Ivory from the Saints, so there's that!

Carey Wilson

As a Buckeye fan, your "other" New York team is really going to enjoy Hankins. He is simply a run stuffer! He does not get many sacks, but he eats up offensive linemen while being very tough to move. He will free up other DL and LBs to make plays as he holds down the middle. He is also a stand up kid and has not even been hinted at as an attitude proplem. Reminds me of Ryan Pickett, who has been a long time DT for Green Bay. Enjoy Big Hank!

As a fan of the Bengals, I was hoping that Lacy would fall to them in the second round. The plan seemed to come together, only to have them draft Giovani Benard from North Carolina. I am a huge college football fan, but this is a RB that I am not familiar with at all. I hope the Bengals did their homework, because Lacy looks like a stud to me. Green Bay may have gotten a steal with the 61st pick.

Chris Ivory
Here's something to make you feel a little better: you guys got a steal on a great running back in Chris Ivory. As long as he stays healthy, he's a tough, productive, hard nosed runner who should help bring some ground and pound back to the Jets offense. He has some issues with pass protection, which was one of the things that kept him down on the Saints depth chart, but that should be much less of an issue with the Jets.

100 percent certanty rex will be gone by the end of the season, if not midway through when they are 2-6. They are setting him up to fail, and are going to blame their failures on him. While I think his mouth sometimes go away with him, he's not a bad coach. Its the front office that absolutely stinks.

They did Sanchez a huge disservice last year with the tebow circus. While he's not a great QB, he is not terrible either. If he had an offensive line and people able to catch consistantly he'd do much better and his self confidence would not be in the toilet.

But he has to deal with buttfumble for the rest of his life.

(disclaimer, I'm a Pats fan)

The Woody Johnson show continues. Good to see someone take the place of the late great Al Davis. Oops. Sorry Mr. Davis, you earned everything you had.

No JPP or David Wilson for the Giants this year, yet.

Geno Smith
I actually like Geno Smith - but not for the Jets. I think he is more of a project QB that will be a top 15 QB in a few years. The worst scenario which is likely to come to fruition is when Sanchez and the other three QBs can't get things done this year, Geno will be forced to play unprepared and he will get murdered. I really thought Jets were planning to bomb this year so that they could get Johnny Football, if that was the case why take Geno? If there is a silver lining to this pick, it is Geno's performance against Baylor: 45/51 completions, 656 yards, 8 TDs and 0 interceptions. The rest of the season didn't go quite as well, regardless those are numbers not to be scoffed at.

I'm a Steelers fan, but I was confused by the Jets grabbing Geno Smith. Granted he may turn into a decent QB, but he struggles in the 5 and 7 step drop. Also Sanchez seemed to struggle when he knew Tebow was coming into the game. If fans start clamoring for Smith to start, it won't help his confidence at all. At $8.25 million, you want to put Mark in a position to succeed. I think this years crop of QB's is pretty weak. Barkley and Nassib are still on the board!

Well, everyone in my home state of WV is thrilled about Geno playing for the Jets. They must not be Jets fans.
