Breaking Records

HBO's GAME OF THRONES continues to build.

Sunday's episode recorded our strongest ratings to date, breaking the record set the previous week, which broke the record set the week before that, which...

Let us hope the trend continues this Sunday with my own episode, AUTUMN STORMS... er, CHAINS... no, THE BEAR AND THE MAIDEN FAIR. Yeah, that's the ticket!

A Song of Ice and Fire
I am extremely pleased every week! This show absolutely deserves it. I never saw a show that made me feel so much anger, happiness (not so much of that though, heh), sadness and fear. I can not wait to see what is in store for us, and I already ordered the books too!

You made a truly epic story Mr. Martin, I am honored to experience it in my life!

Can't wait for next sunday :)

Well deserved congrats.
May the dumptrucks full of money continue to run express to Santa Fe! I am curious as to the the reason behind name change from the original of "Autumn Storms," however. It seemed like the perfect title for that dark and stormy night we're all looking forward to. I do understand why the new title would make sense, though.

Looking forward to saying hello at Worldcon and perhaps discussing plots and schemes for defeating Evil Little Bill in the coming months :)

I haven't always understood the changes that have been made from the books, but I trust that you guys are only changing what has to be changed. I absolutely love the show (almost as much as the books, but not quite). I can't wait to see how you are going to handle book four as a series, and I'm in a permanent state of anxiety/euphoria thinking about the release of book six. Keep up the outstanding work, Ser. A grateful fan :)

Super excited about your episode! I doubt it will top 'Blackwater', but I know it will be great!
May. 7th, 2013 08:46 pm (UTC)
"Autumn Storms" was an awesome name, but if a certain scene I've glimpsed in a couple of trailers is in your episode, well, you can't really do much better than "The Bear and the Maiden Fair."

Great news...yet not surprising!

George, do you have that hideout picked out yet for after Episode 9 airs??

Looking forward for next sunday´s episode, hope The Bear and The Maiden Fair breaks another record. Keep up the good work!

Season 4 GRRM episode
Do you know which episode you'll be in charge of in the 4th season?

Re: Season 4 GRRM episode
I do. I've already written it.

Re: Season 4 GRRM episode
yay! Not much more to say than that...cep't that I am happy.

This is great news for you and us all! it's all very exciting!

Jaime Lannister is...
My favorite character in the series. I love how the show has handled that storyline and I want Nikolaj Coster-Waldau to atleast be nominated for an Emmy or GG.

I've read and watched several of your interviews and know of your love of wriiting Tyrion and Arya. And your difficulty of getting into Bran's skin. But is Jaime a character that for the most part you're able to write with ease? His character arc is strong and flows so well, and I'm always left remembering his quotes at the end of his chapters.

I've loved the last two episodes in particular, and now trust that where the series diverges from the books, if it is of consequence it will be resolved later. Poor Ros!

Thank you!
The show is the best I have watched and the series is the best I have ever read and we all thank you! I have to ask where did you get the inspiration for the R'hllor faith?

Don't worry, the combination of your imagination and the books is definitely not second best.

The title scene was moved from another episode. Likely one or more of my scenes may have been moved out to make room for it, but I won't know until I actually see the finished show.

I came to ask the same. Many scenes appear to happen this episode that weren't in the book, i.e. Theon, Mel/Gendry, Robb/Talisa. Hopefully you merely wanted fresh material to pen; even if D&D wrote them and they are well done, I want a pure GRRM episode! (The bear scene still counts as your scene because it was in the original text -- well, if it is faithful.)

Excellent, I always look forward to your episodes. It can't get any better than when it comes directly from the source. Bryan Cogman's episodes are turning out to be well worth the wait, as well. I also enjoy Michelle MacLaren's work so this coming Sunday should be a real treat indeed!

Knowing what's going to happen, probably, I think "The Bear and the Maiden Fair" is the perfect title.

I only hope you kept Jaime's detailed dream in this episode, it is much fun and it seems fundamental to the story...

I love when u write an episode just to have a week of peace on the message boards instead of brutal arguing between book "purists" and everyone else. And the two you've done so far have been great, especially The Pointy End.

I don't mind literary arguments, so long as they remain polite.

In fact, I rather enjoy them.

This is a random change of subject, but I know you are a big Gmen fan, and I grew up on Pamrapo Court in Jersey, which I believe is near your roots, and I was wondering if you are also a Knicks fan. Because I'm watching them now and getting real frustrated.
May. 12th, 2013 01:26 am (UTC)
Not really. Never had much interest in basketball.
May. 13th, 2013 01:00 pm (UTC)
In this case, I do have a question for you, Mr Martin.
Regarding Robb Stark marriage with Talisa. How necessary you thought this change was?
I mean, I can understand the reasons of why marry Jeyne Westerling. She was the oldest daughter of an old House, that although poor, well respected and descended directly from the First Men. Also, Catelyn wasn't there to put any sense on her son about marrying her and break the alliance with the Frey.

While Talisa, well, she was a foreign, and while she WAS a noble, she is now just a little better than a peasant, regarding social status and she brings no army with the marriage, no matter how small. Also, Catelyn was there on the same camp with him, there are no witness to the marriage, save the septon and the marriage was a southron one, and not performed before a weirwood.
I mean, in this case, Robb Stark could lose not only his Frey allies but also his own followers.
Sorry, but that was the moment, for me where the show jumped the shark, and now, I just patiently wait for the remaining of your books.
Thank you for your time and sorry for the long rant.

Edit: For some reason my reply as linked to your comment about basketball and not about literary discussion. Strange...

My sweet congrats to HBO, and for everyone who work on the show. This episode, for me, was the best till now! Each episode is better than the next. If this one, and the "Now His Watch is ended" had a huge impact on me, I imagine Rains of Castamere. Once again: Congratulations to everyone on the show.

please, don't kill them all
give us one more episode with R ;(

Re: please, don't kill them all
Quiet, you; I enjoy blood in the gutters. An episode without at least five deaths is a dull affair.
May. 11th, 2013 03:15 pm (UTC)
The episodes this season have been the strongest yet. Exceptionally crafted. You have a lot to live up to. Looking forward to it.

Littlefinger's inspiration
Are there any real life individuals which inspired the character of Petyr Baelish? And of actual historical people, would Lord Baelish have found any personally meaningful or "heroic"?

You were complaining last month about record levels of piracy. How exactly do you think these records are being set? It's not like someone's going to walk into GoT cold halfway through the third season - all those people watching it on HBO are people who've already seen the previous episodes. If more people watch this episode than the last one on HBO, it's because people have watched the last episode off HBO(i.e., via piracy) and are now watching it live.

Personally, I own all the books, both seasons on Blu-Ray, and have an HBO subscription...but I still pirate it when I miss an episode, because I don't have a PVR and it's just easier than waiting for the rerun. Saw last week live, so I contributed to that record, but I missed the week before. I suspect most of the increased viewership did the same.

the wait is killing me :)
Excited about tonight!! I have been watching them all again today :) The scene where Dany speaks Valyrian for the first time to the Unsullied still gives me chills and I have watched that episode about 5 times now :)

Question: When Shireen sings Patchfaces' song is that how it sounded to you when you wrote it? I figured it to be a little more jolly/goofy sounding.

LOVED it. I'm so happy that Games is getting so much attention,...the attention it has deserved for so long. Well done Sir!
