thumbs up
Hot damn.

GAME OF THRONES has just won the Radio Times BAFTA Award:

The BAFTAs, for those unfamiliar with them, are the British Emmys. Despite the fact that we shoot in Belfast, Northern Ireland (and Morocco, Iceland, Croatia, and Malta) and that half of our cast is British (most of the rest being Irish, with here and there a Dane, a Norwegian, a German, and even a token American), we are considered to be an American show, I guess because HBO is an American company, and therefore ineligible for the BAFTAs.

However, this one category, the Radio Times award, is for the best international show, and unlike the other BAFTAs, it is chosen by popular vote.

Which I guess just proves that a lot of Brits are watching, even if we are an "American" show.

Congrats to all!!

Not just international shows, ALL shows on Brit telly so GOT is officially the best programme on the box according to the Great British public, (you beat off 'Homeland', 'Call the Midwives' (Brit show), the opening ceremony of the London Olympics (Brit obviously) & couple of others I can't remember. Lord Tywin & Brienne were there too!

I guess it could be difficult get the whole cast to chant "USA! USA!" for this "American' show... We only have one man, or just Halfman, representing US!

Great news! You guys deserve it!

Congratulations to everyone associated with the show! Considering the mixed cast and shooting locations, nice to see international recognition.

As a Scot, I'm so pleased to hear that GOT got this award, and it is even more significant being an audience choice :) Game of Thrones is certainly the best TV show I have seen. The TV show and books are a mythological masterpiece. I love every second of it.

Incidentally, will need to get my backside to the place where the Winterfell scenes were filmed! Only recently learned that was in Scotland.

Congratulations to all! You have much to be proud of.

I am hearing rumors on Facebook that there is a cameo with you George in the episode tonight. Will be interesting to see if I can spot you since I don't think you would be wearing your hat :)

Good on the Brits! Clearly, they are discriminating viewers. Congratulations to the whole GOT team!

Congrats to you, and the crew!

today was the last day of the Ottawa Comic Con, and there was a panel with Ross Mullan (White Walker end of season 2). great guy, someone suggested him for Bloodraven.

Well, sir - not bad for a "Yank" show! LOL Congratulations!

Congrats! I just returned from a vacation in Jamaica and there were a good number of Brits there. We got into a great conversation about Game of Thrones with some of them. Yes, many are watching and loving the show! I impressed them with my Nook cover that was autographed by GRRM at last year's ChiCon in Chicago.

pheck yeah!

Congratulations! The BAFTAs is a cross between the Emmys and the Oscars, in that it awards both British television and film. Still, as other's have said, to win the popular vote above such "local" shows as 'Call The Midwife' and 'Doctor Who' is testament to the work of the cast and crew.

That's brilliant!

As a Brit I can in fact say the the international award was not won by Game of Thrones (the one the posh critics vote for). GoT however won the audience award, which is spread over all the categories and is the one decided exclusively by the British Public. So this is the "best on the box" according to British audiences and is perhaps the mist prestigious award on the night. So congrats GoT

Indeed it was not just international but Radio Times was a popular vote. GoT competed against:

Call the Midwife
The Great British Bake Off
The London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony
Strictly Come Dancing

Radio Times did do a great article stressing the number of British actors in GoT though I did think Call the Midwife might beat it. Considering that it is on a subscribed channel only available to SKY (folk like me who are with another service have to wait for DVDs) over those in the same category which are available on terrestrial channels like BBC is quite an accomplishment.

Well deserved, I was surprised to see the shock when it won - as a Brit I can safely confirm that people LOVE this show. Everyone is talking about it. Can hardly turn on the radio or a chat show on TV without someone mentioning it in some context or other. It may possibly have been so eagerly anticipated at the start because it was an HBO show - which have huge following here after a few major success stories. However it was immediately a talking point once it started so it's not just that. It is great to see 'ordinary' people enjoying fantasy on TV. Let's hope it continues as it becomes more... complex. :-)

That's because we LOVE it! :D

It hasn't won any awards here in Turkey, but if conversations among my students are anything to go by, it's incredibly popular among the kind of Turks who watch foreign TV shows. Just this morning in class I was asked what "The Bear and the Maiden Fair" was all about ;-)

By the way, did you see that Arya was the girl's name that gained the most in popularity last year:

Most readers and/or viewers I know here on the sceptred Isle think that it is secretly British anyway - inspired by the War of the Roses. Whatever: it is a treat to have a US show with Brits not getting just the parts of the Baddies. On the other hand who is not at least in part bad in GoT? Congratulations.
