Swords for Sale

sword
The intrepid armorers and brawny blacksmiths at Valyrian Steel have been busy of late. Valyrian has just rolled out two weapons in their new HBO-licensed line of replicas -- the Catspaw Dagger used by the rogue sent to kill Bran in his bed, and the Sword of Robb Stark.

(For those of you who have been collecting Valyrian's replicas of the weapons from the novels, yes, that line is continuing as well, but Jalic has also entered into this deal with HBO to produce limited edition replicas of the blades from the show. So it is entirely possible that eventually there will be two variant 'editions' of the same blade, though it has not happened yet).

Here's the Catspaw Dagger:

Catspaw 2

A handsome blade, I think. Though rather completely different from the dagger in the books, which was far plainer (though made of Valryian steel, with a dragonbone grip). It can be ordered here:

http://www.valyriansteel.com/shop/swords/catspaw-blade/prod_20.html

The Sword of Robb Stark is never described in any detail in my novels... but if I ever had paid it any mind, it probably would have looked quite a lot like the one seen in the show, which Valyrian Steel has replicated. So this one can almost be considered "novel authentic" as well as "show authentic." Here 'tis:

Robbs sword on Plaque

You can order Robb's sword at http://www.valyriansteel.com/shop/swords/robb-stark/prod_21.html

Both weapons come with a Certification of Authenticity -- though, please note, not a SIGNED CoA, since these derive from the TV show, not the books. The weapons from the ICE & FIRE range, as opposed to the GAME OF THRONES range, are the only ones that include my illegible scrawl.

Speaking of which, I should also note that Valyrian Steel's replica of Needle, the sword of Arya Stark, is now SOLD OUT, like Longclaw and Ice before it (a second version of Ice, based on the HBO version, is forthcoming, but the novel version is all gone). These blades are all limited editions; when they are gone, they are gone, and the price on ebay and other collector sites tends to skyrocket. Robert's Warhammer and the Night's Watch dragonglass dagger set remain available from Valyrian Steel, but stocks are dwindling, so if you want one, don't wait too long.

I love Valyrian Steel, they make such gorgeous replicas! I have Needle on my wall between two of my bookcases, I love it. I see it every time I look up from my computer.

Dagger
The catspaw dagger looks like something I would expect to see in a sci-fi movie/series. I'd expect the dagger to be double-edged.

Out of curiosity, is there a story/legend behind the Valyrian claim to the blood of the dragon?

When will we see one of those curved thingies, of the sort that sliced Khal Drogo?

Also, will anybody be making one of those wood practice swords?

The Red Wedding
Those swords are beautiful, and I wish I had the money for them.

Also, the show did the Red Wedding wonderfully, as wonderful as that horrific scene could be. I think it might actually be more upsetting then when I read the Red Wedding in the books. I really hope that the North remembers, according to Wyman Manderly.

Pretty neat. There are so many interesting swords in your ASOIAF series. I would love to see a replica of the mythical Lightbringer sword....though hopefully without a living heart being used to make that replica.

inspiration for the Reed's
Dear Mr. Martin,

I am leaving a question/comment in an inappropriate place. Don't know where else to go...

You seem "historically informed" with respect to how you create the world of Ice & Fire in that it seems some of your fantasy cultures where markedly inspired by true historical events/cultures.

I thus can not help but ask if the Reed's were inspired by a group of peoples, a tribe really, in France on the Atlantic Coast.

It seems that there was a tribe in France living in swamplands near the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. They were regularly revolting against whatever royal person was claiming to run France. They were such a trouble that a part of the reason the pine forest at Les Landes was planted in the first place was to remove the swamp where these people could hide and fight from.

I learned about this in the book "The Discovery of France," which essentially attempts a history of France from the peasant's point of view. It is a brilliant book, and as a history buff, you should check it out.

But... Original question... By chance, where the Reed's inspired by this group of people? Thanks,

The Canary

Sorry, no, these folks sound fascinating, but I'd never heard of them before.

Impulse Purchase
Impulse-purchased Robb's sword after last night's episode. I dreaded watching it the entire day, and actually started to suffer serious anxiety during the episode. My heart was thundering; my body was trembling; and my lips were quivering. The Red Wedding was just as horrific as I imagined. Maybe clinging to Robb's sword will help me cope with the devastation.

Illegible coa's
Haha! I have your illegible coa for Robert's war hammer (which is awesome). I was wondering if you just went through a stack of them and literally signed them all yourself. Not that I know you personally, but I feel you are the type of person who would.

Thanks for working through the hand cramps you most likely got while signing them. Fans such as myself appreciate all your effort.

Re: Unwise ;)
Yes, all over the Internet people are proclaiming GAME OF THRONES the greatest show of all time.

So, best day to promote its products.

The closest I see you coming to New York is Washington DC. Oct 17th... totally worth it to get all my Hardcovers signed as the Jewels of my future family library. I hope you get some more dates in New York in the future so I can come visit again

Needle
I have MY Needle! :) I Love it SO much!! I wish I could wear it everyday. I'm thinking of buying Robb's Sword and I'm definitely planning on getting the HBO version of Longclaw and Ice when they're released because I missed the book versions. If they release a book version of Lightbringer, I might get that.

That dagger looks like the ruby-hilted dagger from Shadar Logoth, from A Wheel of Time. Like right on.

Congratulations
Just a quick congratulations on the successful showing of TRW and to once again blow the minds of an entirely new fan base for the TV show. The uproar back in 2000 has been heard again in 2013. I am enjoying the fallout immensely and the look of my wife's face as she yelled at the TV was priceless. Thanks for the memories. :)

I have that scrawl too!
On Damascus Longclaw #074. My Needle is still in its box, but I had to mount and display Longclaw...much to the chagrin of my wife. I had originally asked for either #100 or #074 (with only 100 swords, they were taking requests), and the good folks at VS told me that I could have #074, but #100 was reserved for someone named George R. R. Martin.

Hi Mr. Martin,

I am curious if there are any plans in the works to release replicas of apparel, specifically the white cloaks of the Kings Guard? </p>

I very much love the world you've created and look forward to visiting Westeros once more in 'The Princess And The Queen'.

Happy Writing!
Ryan
