Back From LA

Just back from a week in LA.

I did Conan (the O'Brien, not the Cimmerian) and the Today Show, and taped a segment for a BBC special about Machiavelli... along with the usual dozen or so meeetings.

Also, while in town, swung by the Bookstar in Studio City and signed all their stock of my books, which was considerable. So if you're an Angeleno or just visiting LA, and want to snag an autographed copy of one of my novels, get yourself to Studio City while the supply lasts.

And now I'm back in the land of wolves and savage dust storms, digging out from under.

Book signings etiquette
It occurred to me when I was going to have you sign some books that I am not sure how I would benefit. I certainly am not going to sell them - in fact I have more than one copy of several. I guess my heirs could sell them but they will be pretty beat up by then even if I get hit by a truck tomorrow. So in the event that I find myself in a book-signing line - what should I do? Generally one has a squib of small talk with the author while he signs. What would happen if I just got in line and said Hi? and shook hands or something? It worked with Vincent Price but as far as I can tell, except for the ravens, you are not quite the same people. My last book signing I knocked the author right off the rails. He was doing a study of people's T-shirts and I wasnt at all interested in discussing it, not knowing he was on a quest. So I dont want to break the spell either. If having a book signed is necessary for the ambience I will definitely carry one.

Re: Book signings etiquette
If you just want to say hi, book signings are not the place to do it. Come to a con. Worldcon in San Antonio over Labor Day, for instance.

Damn thanks ! Never been to a con in 120 years of reading SFF mags. Now I might just go. Look for the oldest Arya there. Wow starting with a Labor Day World Con! Better start working out.
