We're Number One...

... in graphic novels.

The second volume of the GAME OF THRONES graphic novel debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list:

(And, hey, the following week's list is out, and we're still number one).

My thanks and congratulations to Daniel Abraham (who wrote the script) and Tommy Patterson (who drew the pictures) and Mike S. Miller (who did the covers). They do all the real work on this one. This is their triumph, much more than mine.

I'm glad so many of you are enjoying the funny book.

That's great news. I had preordered it so long ago I forgot it was being released, so it was a happy surprise when I received it.

About the comicbook.
I have realized you do not like fanart, but I wonder how you see this comicbook? I havn't read it yet, but from what I saw in forums they are very close to the book when it comes to events and chapters. Do you consider this to be semi-canon or do you fully support it?

Great Work!
This may be sad to say, but I just picked up volume 1 of the graphic novel yesterday. The art is really great! I don't know why I've avoided it for so long, but I saw it at Barnes and Noble and decided I must have it. I got Volume 1 and 2 and my friend bought me the Lands of Ice and Fire for my birthday. It's been an Ice and Fire couple of weeks.

I understand, that I overindulge on your friendly attitude towards fans (and you are one of the most friendly writers in that regard), but I asked a question in one of the previous messages about origins of Jaime's character (similarities between him and Samson). If is not too much, would you please give an answer (or answer, that there will be no answer)to that question.

Ever your admirer,

Hi George -I saw this wanted to say hi and Congrats. It has been a year since our mini Thai reunion - how time flies. Loving the show, loving everything...hope the writing is going great! All my best, Sheila

Big congrats George to you (for the story) and the team for the graphic novelization. Well done and deserved!

Glad to see this is doing well. Your real take on characters (particularly women) is an asset to the "traditional" (to put it as nicely as I can) world of graphic novels.

I pick up the Comic on a monthly basis but of course I pick up the collections as well.

Really enjoyed the forward and reminiscing about classic Illustrated. My Teacher used to buy them and leave them in the classroom as a "Gateway Drug" to reading the real thing...and it worked!

ASOIAF is truly a universal story, I mean how many stories are successful on so many mediums? Not many.

"Grey Worm"
Hi mister "Grr" :)
Do you know that "Grey Worm" in Valyrian sounds for italians "Porco Nudo" that means "Naked Pig"? XD
Cool name indeed, Naked Pig ahahah, you should use it.

George, does the first volume of the graphic novel cover the entire first book, and the second volume start at A Clash of Kings? I'm a little confused at what these volumes cover.

Re: question
No, not at all. We're still doing A GAME OF THRONES. This is a very faithful adaptation, so many issues are required.

Issue by Issue
Too bad that doesn't count those of us who've been following the series issue by issue. If so, you'd be...number one still, statistically speaking. But still! Know there're lots who buy the floppy issues too!

Hi George! This is a bit off-topic, but on behalf of all your arachnophobic fans, I was wondering if you'd be willing to conveniently forget to include "snow spiders" in the upcoming ASOIAF books. Thanks in advance!

Well, depending on how reliable Sam's memories are, they may simply be an inaccurate account in a book a scared man remembered in a bad memory.

So there is actually a chance there aren't any. That being said, I'd prefer one made of ice.

House Martell Casting
Hi George,

I was wondering what you thought about the most recent casting decision for the Martells...as a reader and a person of color who really appreciated the diversity in your novels, I was wondering if this means that the Martells will be white on the show. If so, that's disappointing to me because given how they were described in the novels, with their darker features and unique culture (particularly the way Andal Westerosi saw them) it definitely like they would match up to people of color in our world (eg. call out to Moors or different Middle Eastern cultures.) Is there anything fans can do to help encourage the showrunners to cast the Martells diversely?

Re: House Martell Casting
I wasn't present for Pedro Pascal's audition, but I understand that he really killed it with his reading. And since his casting was announced, the producer of another TV show on which he appeared recently has written me to say how terrific Pascal is, and to congratulate us on the casting. So I suspect that he will turn out to be a wonderful Red Viper.

I do know that David and Dan and HBO do favor having a racially and ethnically diverse cast on the series. It is true that we've lost several black characters who appear in the novels (Chataya and Alayaya, Jalabhar Xho, Strong Belwas), but to balance that, characters like Salladhor Saan and Xaro Xhoan Daxos, both white in the books, have been played by black actors. Missandei as well, though in the books the Naathi are golden-skinned, not white.

As for the Dornishmen, well, though by and large I reject one to one analogies, I've always pictured the "salty Dornish" as being more Mediterranean than African in appearance; Greek, Spanish, Italian, Portugese, etc. Dark hair and eyes, olive skin. Pedro Pascal is Chilean. (Check out Amok's version of the Red Viper, that's how I saw him. Or Magali Villenueve's beautiful and sexy portrait of Princess Arianne).

When and if the show introduces Prince Oberyn's daughters, the Sand Snakes, I expect we will see the same diversity as in the books, ranging from Tyene (blond and blue-eyed) to Sarella (light brown skin, as her mother was a Summer Islander). And I expect that the crew of the CINNAMON WIND will all be cast with black actors... assuming, of course, that Sam's voyage remains in the story.

I love these comics. The only thing that annoyed me in Vol. 2 was the armor of some of the participants in the Tourney of the Hand - open face helmets in a joust, talk about death wish :)

(anyone reminded of the tv show's lack of helmets for very important characters? :))

So nice to hear that there is a possible gap filler untill the WoW is out. I am guessing they will try and add a little more humor to the graphic novels.
I know the chances are slim but it's still worth it; George can you just tell us how many pages of the manuscript have you finished , dont disclose the probable date, dont give any time frame just tell us the no of pages done . I know how much these queries bother you(and please dont kill any starks for this comment)but please understand that after being patient for more than a decade after reading the first book , i am now scared that the show might catch up to the books if not WoW then by the time of ADoS.
Hope it'll be this comment that will be lucky enough to get the most awaited secret from you.

The day the first collection came out, the bookstore I bought it at didn't even realize they had it in the back waiting to go out onto the shelves until I forced someone to go look for them; now the second volume has debuted at #1 and apparently I'm the last one to hear about its release. There's some strange irony or something going on there. I can't believe they didn't mention this last week when I picked up my copy of the latest (usually) monthly issue at the comic shop; guess I'll be picking mine up later this week.

Anyhow, congratz to you and the comic book team! It's good to see I'm not the only one buying this adaptation in its various forms.

ASoIaF is my favourite series but I really enjoy Daniel Abraham's work too, so there was really never any question that I'd be picking these up. That, plus I'm basically locked into an ever-growing All Things Ice & Fire collection (the books in hard and soft covers, the miniatures, the comics/GN's, the Dunk & Egg stories & GN's...) Pretty much anything that isn't as expensive as the Valyarian Steel replicas, really. Or the stuff in the HBO store, which sadly doesn't seem to be available in Canada.

Something you should check out
Hey I just wanted to say that I love your books and personally I think that when it comes to creating characters you are unparalleled. I bring this up to show my appreciation for the hours of joy you have given me, and because theres another group doing work that hit me just as hard as did that thing in A dance with dragons. You know the one. The Walking Dead by telltale games is on of the finest examples of storytelling I have ever seen, and I am begging you to ask telltale to make a game of thrones game. I would reccomend you play the games, as they are short, but you are most likely incredbily busy. I know this all seems somewhat pandering but screw it, if theres a chance you check out the walking dead because of this then I feel we will have one of the best storytelling experiences in any media and I say that without restraint.

Re: Something you should check out
Thanks. I hear you.

We do have several cool GAME OF THRONES videogames out already -- an RTS and RPG from Cyanide, a social game from Disruptor Beam, and an MMORPG forthcoming from Big Point.

But I heard good things about Telltale Games.

It looks like there are going to be quite a few of these. Between SoIaF and the ever expanding Walking Dead series my bookshelf is going to collapse. I guess it's one of those "good problems"...

Rest of the series
Oh, is there any chance we'll see similar funny book versions of the remainder of the series, or will it be just Game of Thrones?

As long as the comics keep selling, I am sure we'll keep doing them.

Great news indeed!!

Are there any plans to re-publish / reissue the trades in paperback, as they are currently in hardcover? Loving the art, and the 'extra stuff' at the back.
