Coming to San Diego

flames
The next convention on my calendar is the San Diego Comicon.

My dance card is already almost full. Yes, there will be a GAME OF THRONES panel, and I'll be on it. It is scheduled for Friday, July 19, 2:50 to 3:45, in Hall H To be followed by an autographing at the WB booth. Of course, I'll be joined on the panel by half a dozen cast members (no, don't know which ones yet) and David and Dan.

I will also be doing a signing on Saturday, July 20, from 11:00am to noon, in the official autograph area. That one is for Bantam.

Working on two more signings: one for Avatar Comics, which will be launching their new comic of THE SKIN TRADE (based on my novella, scripted by Daniel Abraham) at the con, and one with the marvelous Gary Gianni, the artist for the 2014 ICE & FIRE calendar, which will debut in San Diego. Details on those when I have 'em.

I am not on any panels besides the one for GAME OF THRONES, nor will I be doing any readings (come to worldcon for that), but there should be plenty of chances for anyone who wants me to deface their books, maps, games, videotapes, or body parts with my illegible scrawl. But PLEASE, if you want my autograph, come to one of these four signings. Don't stop me in the hotel lobby or on the street or in a restaurant when I am trying to have dinner.

ADDENDUM: SIGNING DETAILS

I now have the details on another of my signings, so I thought I would add them here.

On Thursday, 2:00 - 3:00 pm, I will be signing copies of the 2014 ICE & FIRE CALENDAR, together with the amazing Gary Gianni, the artist. The signing will take place at Gary's booth, Booth #4902/ 4904 on the convention floor. First come first served, as usual... Gary has only 150 copies of the calendar, and I can only be there for an hour. Though this is a signing for the CALENDAR, not my books, I will autograph ONE (1) book for anyone who buys a copy of the calendar. As in other recent events, I will be doing only signatures, no inscriptions. Sorry, I'd love to, but time does not allow. Gary may or may not be doing inscriptions, don't know, that's his call.

Oh, gawd. Good luck with that. You just know there'll be some socially un-enclued individuals who think this doesn't apply to them. Don't you miss the days when you didn't need people to run interference? Ugh.

I do, actually. There was a time when I would walk the floor at comicon for hours, checking out the booths, visiting friends, buying books and comic books. No more. Now I need security.

But there are compensations, of course. The dumptrucks full of money are nice. All that green helps me Do Good, Fight Evil, and Have Fun. (But not dinner).

All in all, I actually do NOT want to be Greta Garbo, fwiw.

Supper time is sacred.....
Busting up your meals to ask for things is very rude. It is known. : )

Hope you still manage to enjoy the con given all that! I'd love to be able to meet you, but I have this funny little reaction to large crowds that tends to get me in trouble with the authorities. ;-)

So Excited! Been waiting for this news for weeks! Glad you are the one to bring it to us. Hope to see you there...again. Do you know if your signings are going to be ticketed or not?

This will be my 17th straight SDCC...I can still remember going in '97 and they were excited to have broken 30,000 attendees.

I'm hoping to make the GoT panel this year. Last two years I've had conflicts (I volunteer for Hero Initiative while there)and will hopefully be lucky enough to get into the HBO signing (Will be getting up at the crack of Dawn for the chance!)

Hard to believe it's only a couple of weeks away!

I would never dream of interrupting a meal.
That's completely reasonable. But say I do run across you in a restaurant by some extreme chance of fate: Can I at least send over a drink in appreciation of the countless hours of enjoyment you've given me.

If so, what drink might that be?

Got my fingers crossed that you can make a con someday in Canada. The 'main' ones are Ottawa, Montreal, and the one in Toronto in August.

In the mean time tho, looking forward to what Game of Thrones and Ice Fire treats will be in store come San Diego.

(Any remote chance of you going to London, Manchester or Sheffield?)

Hey GRRM,

Are there any events not tied to ComicCon in California where one could attend, say hi and generally give you a hearty "thanks" for all the wonderful hours of reading you've given us? ComicCon is so crazy these days. *crosses fingers*

Any conventions in NYC on the horizon, or did I miss out?
Mr Martin, first I'd like to thank you for your contributions to the realm of fantasy over the years. I have fond memories of watching Twilight Zone in the 80s as a kid. I think its great that you have this type of forum to communicate with fans and I admire how down to earth you are, with your impeccable sense of humor. I was never one to frequent conventions, but if you're going to be in the NYC area anytime soon, I'd love to attend! Also, I'm sorry if this might be off topic, but are there plans to make GoT/ASoIaF action figures, like the ones that came out for Lord of the Rings several years ago? I'd love to display The Night's Watch and Lannisters next to my vintage Star Wars figures. Take care!

Re: Any conventions in NYC on the horizon, or did I miss out?
I don't know about action figures, but they have bobblehead like figurines of a few characters. Though fat chance they'll make a Night's Watch one. THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE A SANSA STARK FIGURINE (something which infuriates me to no end.)

WEll, I wish I could come to Comic Con and World Con but am afraid that international air fare is to expensive right now...

Any plans to ever come to Brazil? :D

I wish you the best of luck in keeping your wrist exercised without any sprain during the Comic Con signings I am sure it will well attended by thousands wishing for your autograph!

you make similar posts to this one almost every time you have a major convention. the fact you repeat this admonition regularly suggests to me that people do not listen to your request. is this true? how often DO you get stopped while eating dinner to sign stuff?

Quiet dinner - leave the Gaslamp
While people should have manners, you may consider leaving Gaslamp for dinner if you want peace and quiet. There are great spots close to the area in Hillcrest and Kensington that will be Comic Con free. Then again, you may get the more casual fans who will just stop by to berate you for the Red Wedding...

Hopefully I'll make it by a signing, since I will have a couple young kids with me who will have no interest in the panel!

I am not quite sure what you are asking. But in any case, this is the wrong venue to ask it. Email my assistant Ty at grrmbooks@gmail.com and let him know what you're proposing, and we'll consider it.

In any case, good luck with your game.

I just want to say I had the honor of attending a reading you did at the (now defunct, alas!) west side Borders in Madison, WI. It was for the release of A Feast For Crows. You were so engaging I became a fan right then. I relish the experience.

Thanks. Very kind of you.

We miss Borders here in Santa Fe. With them gone (they had two big stores here), the only bookstore in town with a decent SF and fantasy section is Hastings, and they're mainly a music store. The nearest B&N is an hour away in Albuquerque.

Too quiet...
The Jets have been out of the headlines for almost a month now (Sanchez and his dance themed video sequel to the Buttfumble is the last cringe inducer that I can think of), while the Patriots have been in them. That violates several intergalactic offseason football laws.

Is this... is this really happening?

I hope there will be a video for us international fans.
On another note, there was a few days ago the Palio of Siena and I don't know why but I could totally see that happening in Westeros or maybe more in one of the Free Cities like Braavos. I don't know if you heard about it or watched some videos on youtube.

Since you are not on the roster for DragonCon which is close to me, and I am not able to attend there, is there a good way to send a fan gift to you? Is the fan mail address in Santa Fe someplace where you would actually receive what I plan to send you? I know you must get tons of mail and gifts, but what I want to send is totally unique, I can assure you, as a thank you.

That's very kind, but really, you don't need to send me gifts.

Having you read and enjoy my books is gift enough.

But yes, the address in Santa Fe is THE address.
