Dany and the Dragons

What's that, you ask? Dany and the Dragons? A forgotten rock group of the doo-wop era?

NO! It's a special variant cover for issue #15 of the GAME OF THRONES comic, available only (or so we are told) at the San Diego Comicon, as a comicon exclusive.

This special alternate cover was requested and commissioned by our friends at Mile High Comics, in cooperation with Dynamite Comics. It is my understanding that it will be available only at the Mile High booth. (Though of course the same issue, with the regular cover, will be available from numerous dealers at the con).

The artist is Fritz Casa.

((Before you all start posting messages and sending emails... yes, we're well aware that the scene depicted does not actually occur in this issue. In fact, Dany's dragons have not even hatched yet in the comics, that's a good ten issues in the future. And even when they do hatch, the dragons won't be that big until, oh, STORM OF SWORDS or so. [A couple of other things here are also bigger than I'd envisioned]. No need to point all this out. My editors and I pointed it all out already to Dynamite and Mile High, but this is the cover they wanted. Artistic License, and all. The Mike S. Miller cover, with a completely different scene, will also continue to be available.))

I am told that Dynamite printed 1500 copies of these for Mile High... but with 150,000 fans at comicon, there's no telling how long they will last. So if you want to snag one, I'd advise you to hit the Mile High booth early.

(Yes, that's Froggy. No, there's no casting clue in this post. I just missed the lil' guy. Hiya, kids, hiya, hiya.

So jealous that I won't be there to acquire it!

I just keep getting more and more sad that I won't be able to go!

Quick question, I have two issues of the books, one in english and one in Portuguese, there is a discrepancy in the description of Jeyne's hips in the english version as compared to a previous observation by Catelyn. In the portuguese version the hips are stated to be both somewhat "generous" by Catelyn and Jaime both.

Should I consider the portuguese or the english version correct?

That's a lovely cover, but aren't those wyverns rather than dragons? I thought dragons had four legs and wings, and those only have two...

According to the rules of heraldry, dragons have four legs and wyverns two, yes. But have you ever seen a heraldic "seahorse?" Heralds didn't know crap about biology.

Now, there are no actual dragons, to be sure. But there are bats, and there are birds, and once upon a time there were pterodactyls. Those are the models to use when designing a dragon. No beast in nature has four legs AND wings.

Besides, the best dragon ever shown on film, Vermithrax Perjorative, has two legs and two wings.

My dragons have two legs.

The best dragon ever shown on film
Wait for Smaug The Magnificent.

> No beast in nature has four legs AND wings.

But there are plenty that have six legs and 4 wings. They may not be dragons but they are dragonflies. :-)

In a recent Q&A, you said that you might add other mythical creatures in future books, including wyverns. How will you differentiate wyverns from dragons if your dragons are already technically wyverns?
Jul. 9th, 2013 03:22 pm (UTC)
Wyverns don't breathe fire.
Jul. 9th, 2013 03:04 pm (UTC)
As far as I know that's excactly how Smaug will look like in the next "Hobbit" movie. Hopefully he'll be even more impressive than Vermithrax Perjorative (and it's about time, "Dragonslayer" was released more than 30 years ago).

Edit: "Vermithrax Perjorative" will still be the coolest Dragon name ever invented.

I think you are mistaken.
Smaug can actually breath fire as we saw in the first Hobbit movie.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire also had the Hungarian Horntail, a very rather cool-looking dragon. It had two legs as well.

I think it's a bit sad that an author with as much clout as GRRM can't get more say in this kind of art. The fact that they feel they need dragons and large breasts, neither of which is accurate to the story, to sell books is somewhat insulting to the intelligence of the readers. I'd take accurate cover art over this any day.

Couldn't agree more; I really do not like the way Dany is drawn in this.

Yes two Big things here are defiantly bigger than I imagined... but be honest don't like her face especially eyes... too severe...

...and what about a little spoiler for The Winds of Winter??? please-please! :)

we love you!

Jul. 9th, 2013 12:02 am (UTC)
Still...the picture is awesome! Team Stark > Team Dany! :)
Jul. 9th, 2013 12:44 am (UTC)
wondered if you'd seen this. it's kind of hysterical to me that you've managed to traumatize an entire new audience.

Jul. 9th, 2013 01:47 am (UTC)
Well, at least they aren't offering pasty and pasty-free 'Risque' variants.
Jul. 9th, 2013 02:01 am (UTC)
I'll have to check these out sometime...especially if they're being written by some guy named Daniel Abraham.

how many more, or how long before they reach the end of the first book? I'm not sure where the latest issue is story-wise.

Mr. Martin,

Hoping you will humor me by answering two quick questions:

1. The waif in The House of Black & White in Braavos - are there any clues in any of the books regarding what great house she comes from & who her father is?

2. When the kindly old man gives you-know-who the warm milk, is the result punishment or just the next phase in their training?
Jul. 9th, 2013 04:41 am (UTC)
Sorry, that's not the sort of stuff I reveal on blogs. Only in the text.
Jul. 9th, 2013 04:33 am (UTC)
A couple of things?
Yes, a couple of things are bigger. This made me laugh so hard when I read that, I spit out some of my water I was drinking.
Thanks GRRM.

Sorry but I'm a bit of disappointed by the drawing's style... Looks like X-Men with not personnality whatsoever. Just basic american comics.
To my mind, there could / should have been so much more feeling and poetry in the drawings to reflect correctly the atmosphere of the books...

Seems that american illustrators can't sort themselves out from marvel, etc.
Jul. 9th, 2013 05:41 pm (UTC)
I like the drawing style but I really don't like the outfit Dany is wearing.

@belomor555 I hope you'll be dissapointed :p

A spoiler! A spoiler! (Well, maybe...)
Jul. 9th, 2013 05:10 pm (UTC)
Which means: "she will live and (probably) sit the Iron Throne"
Jul. 9th, 2013 06:06 pm (UTC)
OR George was simply expressing his disbelief at the fact that someone could hate Dany so much that he wants to see her dead.

Riddles in the dark...
Jul. 10th, 2013 06:23 am (UTC)
His posts are ALWAYS riddles :-(

Please, don't kill Danny.

Head, spike, wall. That's how I'm hoping Dany's story ends. I'm not holding my breath though.

I'd be plenty happy to see her stay in Essos while Young Griff sits on the throne. Or for the kingdoms to become a representative democracy, of course.

Dragons: children or tools?
Dragons are for Daenerys, her children, or mere tools?
