In Memoriam

sword
For those of you who were not able to come to San Diego for Comicon... or get into Hall H for the GAME OF THRONES panel... here's the video that kicked off the proceedings, a tribute to all those we have loved (or not) and lost during the first three seasons of the show.

Seen all together like that, it does make me seem rather a bloody bastard, doesn't it?

In my own (feeble) defense, however, let me point out that Irri, Rakharo, the Thirteen of Qarth, Xaro Xhoan Daxos, Mago (not seen in the video), and Pyat Pree are all still alive and well (more or less) in the books as of the end of A DANCE WITH DRAGONS.  Like the guys in Spinal Tap, David and Dan do like to turn things up to 11.

Robb's wife is alive in the novels too, but Jeyne Westerling is an entirely different person than Talisa Maegyr with an entirely different fate.  Ros does not exist in the books, but of the characters she replaced, Kyra is dead, but Chataya and Alayaya are still around.

As to where we go from here... season four is coming, and no one is safe on GAME OF THRONES.

Not even those who you think might be safe for another book or two, from reading my novels.

Love!
First, I love the fact that no one is safe (even though I miss poor Ned-and fam-but I know his sacrifice was necessary for the war that ensued). Secondly, I had to laugh at the music that was used. And third (unrelated to your post), I need you to PROMISE you won't change your ending because of people either "figuring out" certain things or simply coming up with strange theories. Promise!! Oh yes & thank you for the books!

No prima donnas in that cast then..
"But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
Nor shall death brag, thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st,
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this and this gives life to thee"

It was so hard to read how Drogo died in the books. But Jason Momoa made the whole thing thousand times worse,i still can't get over it.Your characters are truly alive with such brilliant actors,George!

When reading Dance With Dragons I would imagine that some day Ramsey would meet his fate when the wall would come crashing down on him. Will it happen? No, but a man can dream.

Maybe not
Maybe the show has more deaths of the characters that still live in the book, but it seems to me that the show dropped a lot more deaths.
For example, when people are killed by Sandor Clegane men on road to Harrenhal or all those men in the battle for Blackwather (all these ships and onion knight sons)
Nevertheless, it appears that you are bloodthirsty bastard :-)

I don't have even a slightest hope that anybody in these books is safe.

Sacrifices must be made to advance plot. Some great examples:Obi-Wan in Star Wars, Gandalf (the Grey) in Lord of the Rings, Dumbledore in Harry Potter...there are other examples too of how dire the stakes are when casualties hit close to home.

The leaving Dead
Does this mean you don't plan to use any of those that died in the TV show and not in the books ?

Re: The leaving Dead
Not at all. If they are alive in the books, they are alive in the books, and may well turn up again. Irri (and Jhiqui) is still serving as Dany's handmaid, Rakharo remains one of her bloodriders, Mago will definitely show up again. You will learn the fate of Pyat Pree in WINDS. The Thirteen are still one of the factions contending for power in Qarth. You may see more of Alayaya and Chataya as well, and you will definitely hear more of Jeyne Westerling.

Of course no one is safe!
It's just like real life. No one is safe. Security is an illusion.

Please don't kill my favorite character. This would break my heart. </3 [And, NO, I won't tell you who my favorite is. ;D So maybe I'll have luck then that you won't kill that character. ^-^]

I actually wept when watching, fortunately my colleagues were at lunch and I had the office for myself. All these deaths, I didn't remember there were so many so far. That leaves a bittersweet taste waiting for the last two books...

bloody bastard
It's self-evident that you're a bloody bastard. That settled, the question is what New Jersey calls its bastards. I'd be tempted to go with George Turnpike, but I suppose we could use one of New Jersey's more pleasant features -- George Tomato? George Pine Barrens? I'm open to ideas. ;)

Catelyn followed by The North Remembers. Hm... Interesting.

Just finished THE ARMAGEDDON RAG
Thanks for posting the video!
I must sheepishly admit I had to re-read the Red Wedding chapter after watching the show and being disappointed that ten crows didn't gruesomely slash Cat's face open.

Was all this killing because you regret not killing Larry Richmond? I did not fully understand or like the ending of that book. It felt anti-climatic...something I can't say of SOIAF yet (Bar Catelyn's death).

Have you found any good elves to get you past chapter 37 of Winds of Winter while you're touring around? :P

I love you but you do hurt me.

Happy Endings?
I was starting to wonder if Mr. Martin knew how to write a happy ending for a character? I think I can barley count on one hand how many characters have left ASOIAF without some gruesome ending. Taena Merryweather, Sir Bronn, Hoster Tully...
My only concern is for the good of the people of Westeros!! ;)

Good of them not to include the death scenes of Robb & Catelyn. Though I haven't watched but one or two episodes of the series, the Red Wedding was a wonder to behold. Reading it was bad. I thought I was prepared to watch it, George. I don't think anything could have prepared me for actually seeing it. Yikes.

And look at all those bastards dying. Since I just finished ADOD, I'm a little (i.e. VERY) concerned about a different bastard...

Great video :D
But dear Martin don't justify your self, in the books there are many other characters that die but they are not in the series :D and so they are not in that video ihihih

Thank You
Thank you so much for these amazing books that keep entertaining me and my whole family for years. I mostly appreciate how people's actions in your world have real consequences (as seen on this video), which adds a layer of realism rarely found in other stories. Best Wishes.

Yes, I had friends posting online via Facebook and Twitter that this had been done. And yes, it does make you seem like a bloody bastard ;)! One thing I've learned from you is that no one is safe in your series. I'm ready (I think) for the next season...
