The Princess and the Queen

enthroned
The final story in DANGEROUS WOMEN will be my own, a 30,000 word novella entitled "The Princess and the Queen," a history (somewhat abridged) of the Dance of the Dragons, as set down by a maester of the Citadel.

Tor.com has  uploaded a sample to their site.  You can find it here:

http://www.tor.com/stories/2013/07/dangerous-women-george-r-r-martin-excerpt

Enjoy.

(The full 80,000 word account of the Dance will eventually appear in a book, as yet untitled, that we're calling the GRRMarillion).

Fish and Steve Hogarth were members of the British rock band Marillion (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marillion), which of course sounds like GRRMarillion.

Uh... no... it's a reference to JRRT's Simarillion.

Aha! Being a huge fan of the band, my mind immediately went in that direction, but this makes more sense...Silmarillion, GRRMarillion...epic prequels :)

Loved the excerpt, by the way. Can't wait for more!

Ok, just saw your blog entry from three years ago regarding the character. "I was tired of people assuming he was named after the band. I had never heard of the band when I named him, though I've heard a lot about them since." Sorry for bringing this up since it looks like you've been asked about it more than enough!

" JRRT's Simarillion. "

SilmarilLion is JR's best book by far, but what do you think it's Clarke's best one ?

The band Marillion
The British prog rock band Marillion took their name from Tolkien's Silmarillion. That was originally their name, but they shortened it to Marillion to avoid issues with the Tolkien estate

Their original incarnation (with singer Fish) was often compared favorably to the Peter Gabriel era Genesis. They released 4 studio albums between 1983 & 1987.

Marillion
I think it's a reference to two members of this band (btw, a very good one)
