Jean Cocteau Lives!

flames
The grand re-opening week at the Jean Cocteau has gone by in a blur.  Only two more days to catch ORPHEUS and FORBIDDEN PLANET... for free.  So far, everyone seems to love the new art deco look of the entryway and concessions area, and our famous popcorn.  And the crowds have been great.  Of course, you'd figure that, with admission being free and all.

This weekend will be our first true test.  On Friday we start charging for admission.

We're going to continue to offer an eclectic mix of films.  Something for every taste, we hope.

Next up are SHOUTING SECRETS and EUROPA REPORT.  Check 'em out.

SHOUTING SECRETS

EUROPA REPORT

And for those of you who are allowed to stay up late, here's a taste of our Midnight Movie (11pm, actually) next Friday and Saturday.

RAPTURE-PALOOZA

See you at the movies ((I hope)).

That sounds great!

I think you are doing a wonderful thing with the theater. And if I lived anywhere near there I would be attending.

We have a older theater near us, the Alabama. They show a wide range of movies as well as special events. During Christmas, they have a month of Christmas themed movies. But its not just the movies. They will have special attractions during and surrounding the movies.

Good idea of what older theaters can do.

Hello, George.
It may be offtopic, but nevertheless I can't help but share the artwork of a friend of my friend and her team. Asiya is not on LiveJournal, but here is what she writes:

"Having read the three George Martin's books in 2002-2003, we were longing for the fourth book of the saga, A Feast for Crows, to release. We had been waiting for it veeeery long, for three years. And then, when an amature Russian translation had been released, we made up, printed, and bound the book. In 2013, I decided to make the cover in leather. So, here is the our beloved — hard cover, leather, letters in relief. Now I'm going to design A Dance with Dragons in the same way. The people who took part in the project are Andrey Petrov, Pavel Tarasenko, Yegor Prokhorov, and Asiya Petrova."

Shouting Secrets reaction:
Wow, i recognized Q'Orianka Kilcher from "The New World" by Terrence Malick and... "Sam" and "Billie" from the "Twilight" movie.
Europa Report:
They did it really well. I would definitely go to watch this. By the way, does GRRM believe aliens exist?
Rapture Palooza:
Oh, he killed Jesus. Ok. Hello Anna Kendrick, "Jessica" from "Twilight". The power of coincidence!

Congrats!
It's good to see long dreamt of projects come to successful fruition :)
On a slight tangent, have you had the chance to watch Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim? I was wondering what your opinion was on his extensive world building, given the limited parameters of a movie's runtime?

A bit off-topic but I bumped into this and had to share it with you, Mr. Martin:

"If I was a famous author I would publish a book with ten different endings which all went to print with varying degrees of rarity, but not tell the fans about it so I could watch their confusion as they disagree over how the story ended. Then when they figured it out I would 'come clean', telling them that I had released eleven alternate endings and watch them panic again as they all try to find the last ending."

Thanks!
If someday I ever win the lottery, I will buy up all the sad old movie theaters and bring them back to life. Thanks for doing what you did.

Some of the best moments in my life were walking out of a dim theater, my eye widening to adjust to the light, my eyes opened by what I'd seen.

Streaming, Netflix, DVD's... nothing compares to that act of going to a movie in a theater - alone or with friends - and to a theater that curates its movies.

So anyway, before I keep going on and on, thanks!

Congrats George!
You are truly doing the Lord's work...I would have killed to have met Robby in person. I will have to come down there next time I visit my folks.

I really liked Europa Report, by the way. Interesting, unconventional sci-fi.

I live quite far from there so it's not likely I'll be able to visit anytime soon, much as I really want to. But on the upside, I have a feeling this non-blog is going to become a source of great movie recommendations! If you keep on posting what's playing, that is...

Never heard of any of these before today, but after watching the trailers I want to see all 3!

Will you post any pictures of the interior or opening night?

Re: Congrats on the opening
Hope to, yes. I was too busy myself to take any pictures, but there were lots of cameras there.

First Darkstar, and now Europa Report...

I am really starting to regret my decision to stay in the midwest.

The theater looks to be a resounding success! i for one had a great time at the two showings i attended. But George, I hvaen't seen your smiling face yet at the taco truck. i promise you, ser, i WILL convert you to guac over green chile. But just in case, the little seniorita is rolling out a new menu item.... chili cone queso, and guaco cone carne! green chile with authentic mexican cheese, refritos, red onion cilantro salsa, scooped into a perfectly fried corn tortilla nacho-cream cone. Of course this is also offered as a smaller version of the vintage guacamole nacho platter, same goodness but in a hand-sized cone.

There will be limited guacamole nacho platters if your bringing an appetite. George all you gotta say is "platter" and we'll hook you up, on the house.
