Somewhat Surreal Department

froggy
Given the popularity of HBO's GAME OF THRONES, it is only to be expected that various costume companies would be offering GOT-themed costumes for Halloween this year.  So, unsurprisingly, you can go trick-or-treating as Arya, Daenerys, Melisandre, Jon Snow, and sundry other characters from the show.

Rather more unusual, however, is the outfit selling grisly Red Wedding costimes, complete with buckets o' blood:

http://www.halloweencostumes.com/blog/p-420-diy-game-of-thrones-red-wedding-costumes-spoiler-alert-.aspx

Even those outfits are not the most surreal offering for All Hallow's, however.  Stranger still, you can also attend your favorite Halloween party as...

... me.

I am not entirely sure how I feel about being a Halloween costume.  It does suggest a plan, however.  Perhaps I should buy several of these outfits, and send forth my minions, appropriated costumed, to all my public appearances and booksignings for the next couple of years, while I stay home and write.

Great idea! Just don't send them forth in a manner like Stannis might send his "clones". ;)

I think there were a couple people who dressed up as you as DragonCon, but it wassubtle enough to be something one doesn't feel comfortable being sure of.

There was definitely at least one guy 'costuming' as GRRM at DragonCon. However, the guy dressed as Varys, and another as Littlefinger, really did great jobs.

I responded to this, but I included a link, and I think it was marked as spam. The comment had been, "I wish I had seen another GRRM at Dragon Con, now that would have made my weekend!" followed by a picture of me in costume.

LMAO!!!! It would be really funny if Parris and all your JC theater staff and Minions wore the costumes! It would be hysterical if YOU wore the costume too!!

If Sants Claus can do it, in order to store up the energy to deliver presents in one, twenty-four hour period, you can surely do it as well, for the time to write. ;)

Costumed Minions
It's also a hell of an alibi for traffic citations and the like. "No, your honor, that was someone else, in costume as me. Yes, that's a thing now."

I've seen photos of people cosplaying as you with signs saying things like "I just killed your favorite character." XD

Don't know quite what to say. I will mention that back around 1990, when you were not yet a pop culture icon, somebody mistook me for you (my hat was orange, but of the proper style; and we have a very vague physical similarity).

Aside from missing the beard and mustache, I may already own a rather complete GRRM getup. I've done costumes without masks many times that have been very effective. Somehow, I think KaCSFFS would do fine this year if I ... just...don't. :)

Just curious
Do these costume companies go through a licensing deal with you, or HBO or are they allowed artistic license? I am curious, because if you have had a chance to look at the hoodie I sent you, it has custom buttons that I need to know about. I realize you have been gone a lot recently and may not have even gotten through all your mail yet, but please let me know :)

I say you should get the costume and go to a costume party, and when they don't know who (else) dressed up as you, and unmask you, well, there could be some fun to be had.

Well, I once had someone dress up as me and go to a Halloween party... and I thought it was great! Of course, Im not famous like you... Im just kind of infamous in my circle of friends. But really, I think you should consider it a great honor that people want to dress up as you to scare little children. :)

You might wanna check into getting royalties on those costumes of you tho. But really, how many people have said "I wish I could clone myself!" So, now you kind of can. And yeah, I think sending minions out to book signings and such is a great idea. You may however, eventually have a problem with "you" being seen on survaliance cameras at murder scenes, bookstore break ins, sleazy nightclubs and the like.

this idea
has been pondered by Rafik Schami in his book "Sieben Doppelgänger" which is fun to read. Though I fear it has not been translated into English.

Don´t stay home, just do whatever you want! if more books come out we will be glad, but if you want to live your life no one has the right to reproach you nothing.

I enjoyed how one of the "requirements" for a Robb costume was a Michael Jackson wig.

Comment at the site
I love that the only comment on the costume suggestion is from someone who wouldn't want to dress up like GRRM because he doesn't want to spend Halloween getting asked about Winds of Winter.

Oh God... those RW costumes are awful. And the costume of yourself must definitely feel weird. They were creative, though!

Perhaps there will be Wild Card costumes available in the future, such as Carnifex, Bloat, or Black Eagle. I would pay a fourtune to cosplay my favourite characters!

Halloween
Over the last several years my wife and I have often greeted tricker treaters dressed as Ned and Catelyn Stark but we did literary version costumes not based on the mini-series (I won't wear a version of that wig they put on poor Sean Bean) so we were only recognized by readers (in the early word of mouth days we passed out copies of The Game of Thrones to interested neighbors).

My son's Jon Snow costume managed to get him placed as one of the banner bearers for GOT in the Dragon Con parade (otherwise filled with mini-series clones).

He just got a copy of TGOT for his 16th birthday and long with held permission to read it from his parents....
