Paperbacks Are Coming

tiger
Yes, it's true.  Your wait is over.  A DANCE WITH DRAGONS will finally be published in paperback, next month.

(Have you guys really been waiting?  Really truly?)

The paperback release has been delayed again and again, I know.  (Believe me, I've received a lot of emails about it).  This was done largely at the request of the bookstores.  The hardcover was still selling strongly (still is, actually), so they wanted the paperback delayed.

But no longer.  On October 29, Bantam Spectra will release DANCE simultaneously in trade and mass market paperback editions.

DWD5

And yes, the paperback will include a preview chapter from THE WINDS OF WINTER.  (Though at this point it has been so long that I've forgotten which one it is).

October, by the way, looks to be a huge month for me.  Besides the DANCE paperbacks, I also have OLD MARS coming out that month, and the MEATHOUSE MAN graphic novel, and a little Xmas book called THE WIT AND WISDOM OF TYRION LANNISTER.  But more about that one later.

Paperback
I know you mentioned you don't remember which sample chapter it will be, however, can you remember if it will be unreleased/unread chapter? I have read in interviews it will be new, but since there was such delay maybe you used it during a reading. I think it would be good motivation for prior readers to buy this release.

Thanks
Although, I am now amidst my second reading of ADWD. I recall asking the clerk at Barnes and Noble when I purchased the hardcover if there would be a paperback release anytime soon. He laughed at me. I LOVE my hardcovers books. Thank you GRRM. You're writing is extraordinarily addictive and enjoyable to the reader. All the best to you with TWOW.

I actually have been waiting, and since I will be traveling on the release date, plan to find a bookstore while I'm on vacation so I don't have it arriving at my house while I'm not there.

Sweet! Completists will definitely be pleased!

I'm gifting to this to someone who has your first 4 Ice and Fire books in paperback. I'll read that Winds chapter before wrapping it up, though.

christmas chapters
The Wit and Wisdom of Tyrion Lannister? sounds like a good read!

Hopefully the preview chapter at the end of ADWD is something other than the Theon and Arianne chapters you so wonderfully showed us.

Is there any chance you'll release another sample chapter this Christmas?

For a second there, I thought you were announcing the release date for The Winds of Winter! Alas, my hopes were dashed to the ground, like Gregor Clegane did the presumed baby Aegon (too soon?).

But an Xmas book featuring my favorite character? Huzzah!

THE WIT AND WISDOM OF TYRION LANNISTER for Christmas
Because of all your characters, he's clearly the most cuddly and heartwarming and Tiny Tim-like.

Yes, actually. As useful as the hardcover of ADWD was for battling my way off of a crowded subway on occasion, I've been putting off a reread until the paperback was released as that's much easier to handle while commuting.

I ran out of patience long ago and just ordered the UK paperback. It was worth it! Who am I kidding, though. I'll get this one, too.

ADWD paperback
Weird. Harper Collins paperback edition (UK) has been available since 2012 (and it includes an excerpt from TWOW -Theon- too...)

OK, I just checked my bookshelves because I thought I was hallucinating. It came out in paperback in the UK ages ago, and I bought it at the time! I guess it's the US publishers that have been dragging their heels?

I've been considering getting an e-reader just to make it easier to read DANCE.

And that sound like the best Christmas present ever'

I am confused by this. My ADWD is a paperback and I bought it shortly after release... Was there a small paperback edition or something? I live in Sweden, and I've yet to see the Swedish translation in paperback (waiting to buy it for my mum), but my English one definitely paperback and already bent out of shape from being read a few times!

I'm nearly positive my local English language bookstore in France has had the paperbacks of DWD on the shelves for about a year now.

Are they pirated copies? They are broken down into two editions with half the book in each addition.

This post confuses me because I bought ADWD in paperback more than a year ago. Unless they're releasing it as one book rather than two?

I don't get it. I saw many a paperback A Dance with Dragons in a bookstore near me a moon's turn ago. I read the preview chapter too, it was Theon's.

These are the UK paperback editions. I bought one too (I'm from Germany), but sadly it didn't include the Theon preview chapter.

Same here in Germany. Bought the paperback version form amazon Germany in March 2012 (Bantam Books) for a friend of mine. But great news for your readers in the US. I must confess that I prefer reading your books on my kindle, it's just more conformtable and my paperbacks on my shelf stay in shape.^^
Also, "The Meathouse Man", I loved the this story, when I was reading "The Living Dead", I really exicted to see it as a graphic novel.

Trade paperback

Yup, out in paperback in Ireland, too (though we're probably the same as the UK for publishing.

But - what is the point of trade paperbacks, as opposed to mass market?!

Hardbacks at least provide some protection to the book. Mass-market paperbacks are lighter and convenient. But trade paperbacks have all the extra size and inconvenience, and most of the weight of a hardback, and none of the extra protection afforded by a hard cover. The print is the same size in both. So it seems we get all the disadvantages of both other formats, and none of the benefits of either. Which I suppose is fine if the reader has a choice of formats and likes the larger format, but less so if - as seems common nowadays - publishers insist on only making the trade size available for several months. The upshot for me is if it's not available in hard- or mass-market size, I won't buy it in physical form - and the bookshop loses a sale.

paperback re-read&
Strange thing has happend to me. I've started re-reading a AGOF, got to the point when Cat meets Ned in the King's Landing, so some 200 pages deep, and I don't feel like being hooked.

At least, not in the way I used to be. It is quiet a different read. More contemplating I would say.

And, by the way, I like the paperback edition. The hardcover of ADWD is too bulky for me.

Regards form the City of Kings&Dragons
