Gang Green and the Purple Haze

Okay, I cheated.  In between packing and answering emails and paying bills and otherwise getting ready for our trip down under, I watched a little of the Jets game.

Seven hells.  The Jets won.  Over the Saints.  Who'da thunk it?

And they won the way they were winning a couple of years ago, when Rex took them to the AFC title games: with killer defense and a running game.

Ivory was unstoppable.  I hope this guy stays healthy.  He's a terrific RB when he's not hobbled by injury.  And I can't say enough about the D.

On other football fronts, however... you know, it's a good thing I don't follow college football.  I just learned today that my alma mater, Northwestern, lost to Nebraska on a Hail Mary in a fashion that would surely have given me a heart attack if I'd been watching.  Ah, Northwestern... I'm a member of the Class of 1970 (BSJ) and the Class of 1971 (MSJ), which means I went to school there in the 60s.  During my tenure, the student body voted overwhelmingly to change the team nickname from the rather cliche "Wildcats" to the much more distinctive "Purple Haze."  Now you see why.  (Alas, the university  ignored the will of the students, in favor of the will of the alumni donors).

I can't figure the Jets, or the Eagles. They can look awful one week and like world beaters the next. I do wish the Jets would overtake the Pats in the East, but there might not be enough good teams left on the Pats schedule to allow that.

re: It is a crazy season
Jet defeat the Saints after a blowout loss to Cincy the week before, the Chief are 8-0 and I am glad I have no easy access to a bookie.

Football Craze
Vegas had Jets over/under win total for the year at 4. I thought that was high. Simply amazing what they are doing.

Here in Nebraska though, Huskers are the show and none are too happy with the play of late. Sorry your Wildcats had to be the victims of our illustrious team's first Hail Mary. Go Big Red!

Just trying to imagine what the mascot for the Purple Haze would look like.

Nov. 4th, 2013 02:13 pm (UTC)
Maybe now that the students of the 60s have become the alumni donors, they could get the school to change the team's nickname.
Nov. 4th, 2013 02:48 pm (UTC)
As a Nebraska fan who was in the stadium for that game . . . yeah. I would have been beyond heartbroken had it happened to us like that. Tough way to lose.

I miss Ivory. I wish we had a running game...

Purple Haze
Wish that were true for all of us. Those that still follow the Wildcats were stung particularly hard this weekend. But there's no time for moping in football - gotta pick up and try again against Michigan.

You missed a great game
I'm a Nebraska fan, and it was an incredibly exciting game. Nebraska got very lucky to escape with a win, so as an alumnus of Northwestern you should be proud.

I honestly can't believe the Jets beat the Saints. That's amazing.

I know this has nothing to do with the entry, but did you know that Finland is re-trying to have Worldcon in 2017 in Helsinki? You posted about your support when we tried to get it 2015.
Nov. 4th, 2013 06:12 pm (UTC)
Yes, I know, and I have no doubt I will support the 2017 bid, as I did the bid for 2015. But this is off topic in a football post.
Nov. 4th, 2013 06:54 pm (UTC)
Yes, sorry, just wanted to make sure. (I am pretty excited about it myself, I hope we have better luck this time)

But seriously, congrats for your team winning!

If you haven't been following NU football in the past 15 years, you've been missing out, friend. Well, maybe not this year, but it's been a fun ride!

Also, during my time there, the students elected as student government president some idiot whose campaign centered on the fact that the construction of the Lakefill slaughtered a race of aquatic mer-creatures who were determined to exact revenge for their sufferings. So, you know, the students don't always make the best decisions.

A victory over the Saints is now small deal. Hopefully they can keep it up.

I think Purple Haze, while cool, doesn't really sound like a team nickname. A school newspaper? Definitely. Sounds like NW made the right call on that.

I think Purple Haze sounds like a great team nickname. The Crimson Tide does okay.

New uniforms to promote awareness to the Wounded Warrior Project
Well they're shedding the purple on Nov 16 and going for a more patriotic look against Michigan.

Point taken. Though I never understood the origin of that name and the use of the elephant on some Alabama logos.

Any particular reason you don't follow college football?

And of course the Stanford Cardinal!
(The color, not the bird.) But the dang Tree is even more disturbing than Li'l Red, the Huskers' junior mascot.

I see a Jimi Hendrix lookalike as the mascot.
he would stroll out strumming an axe wreathed in clouds of funny smelling smoke.

I like it.

Things have changed just a little bit: now, the largest Northwestern sports blog is "Sippin' On Purple" over on SB Nation.

I'm on the Rogers Park [northeasternmost corner of Chicago] - Evanston line.
I try to bring up the Purple Haze period as often as I can, because it is totally down the memory hole. The Grateful Dead Homecoming show was the only time I ever schnorred Arnie [JAM Productsions] for tickets.

And a flippin history of youth movements came from the barricade across Sheridan Rd. after Kent State. Some history professor went by and said, "Oh, a barricade." And then, "at Northwestern?" and eventually published "Bombs, Beards, and Barricades"

I still have a handful of amazinggrace stubs in some box.

beat us today...
NFL Hall of Famer (TV color commentator) Dan Dierdorff said that when his Michigan team went into northwestern students would hold signs that read:

'You might beat us today, but you will work for us tomorrow'.

He thought that was pretty mean and you guys hurt his feelings.

In my life I have been (and remain) a Cornhusker (Nebraska), a Boilermaker (Purdue), a Terrapin (Maryland), and an Apricot Forest (Kyorin University in Tokyo). Ergo, I am relieved to be a Heritage University Golden Eagle now. Compared to some of those previous monikers, "Purple Haze" stacks up quite well as a team name.

Northwestern Wounded Warriors Uniform
Not sure when they plan to wear these:

Robb Stark gets vote in Bayonne
A write-in vote was cast in Bayonne, NJ for Robb Stark for the State Assembly. Wasn't me, but I would have voted for him if he ran. I've become hooked on the series.

That was an amazing win
If the Jets continue their habit of winning every other game, they will finish .500! Way better than anyone thought they would be. Ryan has turned in a spectacular coaching performance thus far.

I don't think there's any way Ivory stays healthy though. The guy is about as durable as a Hummel figurine.

Purple Haze as a beer is fantastic. I'm a bit loopy after three. As a mascot, not so much. It doesn't project power or even ironic whimsy like the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. Besides, it's possible Hendrix or his estate may have had a problem with it.

Where is GRRM?
I'm used to coming to your site every day and watch your posts. I have only one question: There is no internet Down Under? :-)

yes dude.. I think he abandoned us for a while :(

The JETS are nowhere near as bad as expected this season, its quite nice to see. I think my vikings have slipped into the vacant under-achiever spot.

ASOIAF at espn.com
Mark Schlabach's weekly "Bottom Ten" column, which usually employs musical references to comment on the troubles of life in the lower echelons of college football, instead used comparisons to "Game of Thrones" characters this week. Ironically enough, the "coveted" #5 slot, which he reserves for a "better" team suffering some disastrous game, went to Northwestern U in honor of their six-game losing streak since holding a fourth-quarter lead on undefeated and 3rd-ranked tOSU. The latest indignity was a triple overtime loss to Michigan in which neither team managed a TD in regulation (9-9 prior to overtime).

Rex Ryan may be the first person to save his job because he was so obviously going to get fired. It says a lot that Jets fans are ecstatic and Giants fans are morose when the Jets are only one game better than Big Blue.

But then the 5-6 is a wildcard in the AFC right now while 4-7 is not even close in the NFC.
