This Week at the Cocteau

Jack Kerouac and Jean Shepherd are coming to the Jean Cocteau Cinema this week... sort of.

In honor of the reason, we're showing my second favorite Christmas movie of all time (I love it, but I have to confess, I love the Alastair Sim CHRISTMAS CAROL even more), A CHRISTMAS STORY.

Jean Shepherd was the great chronicler of what childhood was like for kids of 40s and 50s, and A CHRISTMAS STORY hits all the right notes.  A great film.  Watch out, Ralphie, you'll shoot your eye out!

As for what the grown-ups were doing in the 1950s, we also have BIG SUR, based on Jack Kerouac's writings.

I haven't seen this one yet, but it looks great.

See you at the movies.

I watch The Christmas Story every year! That and Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. :-)

What Christmas movies do you consider to be 'essential viewing'? I'm with you on the '51 (black and white!) Christmas Carol (aka 'Scrooge').

Christmas Vacation and Home Alone are musts.

Re: Christmas Movies
A Christmas Carol circa George C Scott, Muppet, or even the Patrick Stewart variant (which I saw first); Miracle on 34th Street (Edmund Gwenn variation), and Santa Clause (just for simple Tim Allen fun).

Re: Christmas Movies
ah yes - Miracle on 34th (original b&w) and It's a Wonderful Life. The original Santa Clause is good too. Let's not forget Die Hard...it does take place on Christmas Eve.
Not quite a 'Christmas' movie per se, but the Narnia film from '05 is a great winter-y film.

If you throw in It's A Wonderful Life you'd have my favorite Christmas trio. There are a lot of other Holiday movies I also watch this time of year, but those 3 are the top tier.

A Christmas Story Still Sticks...
Even when TBS streams this for the entirety of Christmas Day, I never grow tired of it.

The Alastair Sim Christmas Carol was on last night, late on the TCM channel. I hadn't watched it yet this season, so I had to stay up late to watch it, because it's an essential for me during the holiday season!
