The Amazing Maisie

If you weren't at the Jean Cocteau Cinema on Monday night, you missed out on all the fun.

We had a great day.  People started lining up as the sun was coming up, and the queue grew longer all day.  We sent out coffee and donuts to make sure no one froze or starved to death while waiting in line.  Doors opened at 6:00, with the show starting at 7:00pm, but Maisie Williams and the wolves turned up at 5:00 or so to meet the fans.  Maisie is amazing... not only a talented young actress, but a delight in person.  I think she spoke to everyone in line, signed their books and Funko Pop dolls, posed for pictures.   Not everyone got into the theatre, alas, but everyone in line got to meet Maisie...

... and the wolves. Flurry and Zorro, the wolf ambassadors from Wild Spirit, were great hits as well.

Maisie is on her way back to LA now... but I think she liked Santa Fe, and one day we hope to have her back again.

Meanwhile, the GOT marathon continues next Monday night at the Jean Cocteau.  Next time we will be screening episodes nine and ten from season one -- "Baelor" and "Fire and Blood."  And we'll be joined by executive producers and showrunners DAVID BENIOFF and D.B. WEISS, who will be Skyping in after the episodes to answer your questions.

Line up early.  It's sure to be another epic crowd.

I wish I've met her!! Oh, I have to meet you first! Haha.

GRRM, do you feel that watching the show made you change something on the upcoming books?

I mean, when you write you write for the books only or do you take into consideration "well, that is too big or might not work on the HBO show"?

Re: -
No, the show has had no influence on the books.

Re: - I remember the answer to this one
I had the extreme pleasure to meet GRRM at Eastercon in London three years ago. And someone asked this very question. The answer--which made perfect sense--was no, the TV show does not affect the books in any way. One thing people seem to forget is that the book series started over 15 years ago now (maybe more). GRRM has had this plot and these characters in his head for a long time. No three year old TV show is going to shake that around!

Re: -
What about Osha's role in the books? I read that Natalia Tena did such a great job that you wanted to give her (Osha) a more interesting role to play in the books...
Have you changed your mind about that, or can we expect a more interesting Osha when next we see her?

Does anyone has a video for Q&A part? :)

Re: Q&A
We were asked not to photograph or video in the theater.

Positively green. But I don't think I could've stood out in the cold until the doors opened at six.

It delights me to no end that she is lovely in person, too.

When I read the books sometimes the characters are similar to the show - other times quite different. She is just how I imagine her character.

...and she came with wolves. :)

Sounds like a great time was had by everyone.
Wish could have been there rather than dealing with
the snow in NJ!

It'd be awesome of you and some GoT cast members could make it to Denver Comic Con!

Awww! Maisie is so cute! :) Wish I could be there instead of in IL. :)

I just finished reading the whole series thank you for this wonderful story, it has made me cry, laugh and bite my nails, it has made me love and hate some of the characters but it has made me change my mind many times, when I think I hate one of them suddenly something happens that makes me feel sad about them, it's been a long time since I waited with so much anticipation for a book (since the dark tower series Stephen king) thank you thank you for this wonderful world that you have created I'll be here waiting and re-reading till you share with us another little piece of your soul

Sounds like it was a fantastic day. I would have given my right arm to be there. Maisie is a wonderful person, I hope to meet her one day.

I love that you've been able to create these wonderful experiences for people, but as a person with limited mobility I always worry a little when I hear about things which are first come first served. I'm curious whether you have any provision for people like me, who might not be physically capable of standing in a line for hours, and can't walk sideways so they need to sit near an aisle?
Jan. 24th, 2014 02:35 am (UTC)
Well, when we remodeled the theatre, we did rip out some seats to provide some space for wheelchairs, which did not previously exist. We have one patron in a powered wheelchair who comes every week to the GAME OF THRONES screenings, often with her service dog... though, wisely, she left him home on Monday when the wolves were here.

Thank you for caring enough to make that happen.

George, do you have any plans at all to come up to the NW anytime soon? I'm from Oregon and would love the chance to meet you/buy you a beer and talk football. I'm jealous of all the people down in the SW, I really wish I could see something at the Cocteau!

Re: Oregon
There's a big ICE & FIRE art show at a gallery in Seattle next month. I'd love to make that, but I don't know if time will allow.

As a long-time fan of the books, (I'm one of those who waited all those years for every book release) it's truly wonderful to see the explosive popularity of the books and the HBO show. You deserve every bit of this popularity, George. Congratulations!

I think the show is just fabulous. I could easily be one of those die-hard, this-wasn't-how-it-happened-in-the-books kind of guy, but I just can't do it. The show is just that good, even the deviations from the text. I think it has fully captured the "spirit", if you will, of the text.

I anxiously await the release of Season 3 on Blu-Ray and the soon to be here season 4 opening episode.

And that next book, of course. But I'm very patient. Dance was exquisitely good and I'll patiently wait 10 more years for the next book if that's what happens. There are, after all, five massive volumes already here and I haven't memorized them all yet.

You look like you are her bodyguard in those photos. Keep being awesome by putting together amazing events! Will you put together a panel of writers when Rogues comes out like you did for Dangerous Women? ...also, when is Rogues coming out??

Punishing myself for not hopping on plane, train, and automobile to get to meet Maisie and buy you a drink. I even had four days off this week. Still, got to spend them reading Wild Cards Lowball and playing dice.

Aw, what an adorable little girl.

Sad for missing out
Ayra is my favorite character in the book and Maisie Williams is a great actor who did a great job with portraying her on screen. I'm very sad I couldn't go to Santa Fe. I would have been camping out there if I had the time. Hopefully there is a next time.

Planning ahead..
Hoo boy lining up at sunrise? I'm going to have to do some thinking to make sure I can get into the screening that my wife and I are planning to attend. Only 125 seats if I remember... Time to get up early and head north from ABQ.

Unless of course you have room on staff for a new gopher? I run errands and fetch coffee pretty damn well. Oh and I'm a nurse too. Just saying.

Looking forward to getting up there and hopefully getting in and getting to say hello to you sir.

Thanks again for all you do for your fans.

Dear George,

I am greatly enjoying listening to the wonderful Roy Dotrice reading your wonderful works... Keep up the good work!

I am a resident of Belfast, Northern Ireland, and have greatly enjoyed following the progress of filming of Game of Thrones, with plenty of local interest.

As a fly fisherman for trout and salmon, I enjoy many of our most remote, beautiful and timeless parts of my country, for example, out in my traditional lough boat on Lower lough Erne, stopping on one of its numerous islands for lunch in splendid isolation, or, solitary walking for miles of the banks of a local river out into the wild places of our countryside... I often find myself day dreaming, imagining scenes and encounters in an alternate time and place, with some characters akin to those in your books... Quite a distraction until I am jerked back to reality by the take of a fish..

For me, the books have re-opened my mind and reinvigorated my imagination to a younger time, before I became conditioned to thinking of little other than conventional reality.. I thank you for effectively returning my mind to me, where flights of fancy are once more prevalent, and I am reinvigorated to see beyond the mundane and the everyday commonplace perceptions of life... Scrape beneath the surface and there is always a richer, intricate tapestry to life, death and the world, such as that alternate version depicted in your fantastic books... World within worlds and wheels within wheels. Part of me, and millions of others, have had the privilege to share the world of A Song of Fire and Ice, and our lives are by far the richer for it.

Best regards,

Colin Watterson

I certainly hope that the meeting of Maisie and Ghost is inspiring some Arya material for The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring...

Ha ha, characterful photos. MW looks a little bewildered by the crowds but that side of being a (semi-) celebrity can't be easy when you're only 16. The poster above is right - you do look a little like a bodyguard in those scenes ! I would have liked to have seen a larger version of the second shot, with the white wolf
Jan. 25th, 2014 07:16 pm (UTC)
My first thought on the first photo was "George reviewing the troops."

I love that you (or your assistant) took the time to upload some pictures of Maisie and the wolves. I still wish I could have been there in person but it's better than nothing. Thank you :)
Btw. the sky in the first picture looks just amazing. I love the color!

Thank-you for the added perk of living in Santa Fe! Maisie Williams visit was a real treat, I enjoyed her stories from the set. The wolves were simply majestic, and it was great to learn more about the Wolf Sanctuary.
I may have to miss next Monday- I don't have the wherewithal to survive Ned Stark's beheading again! Your generosity to this community is most appreciated.

This may be off topic slightly, but since we are talking wolves, this warrants a re-post.George, I'm fleshing out my world in my book series I'm working on, and I have a question for you (and your readers) related to wolves:

What do you think of a 'sabrehound'?

Think of a wolf equal to sabre tooth tiger, or sabre cat. Please note that this species will primarily inhabit polar regions. My goal for finishing the first book (as sadly I am a 'part time' writer) will be when a little book called 'A Game of Thrones' turns 20.
