Coolest Dragons Ever

Gotta love them dragons.

I have long maintained that Vermithrax Perjorative was the coolest dragon ever put on film... but Peter Jackson's version of Smaug, from the second HOBBIT film, may have stolen his laurels.

And I gotta say, our own baby Drogon is growing up fast.

Then there's Chrysophylax Dives - who is very cool in his own way. What he lacks in pure pants-wetting terror, he makes up for with cleverness and a level of personality most dragons don't get to display.

How about the dragons in "Reign of Fire"?

I just received my copy of the Jokers Wild reprint. Exciting! I hope that the next volumes are released soonish.

While I haven't seen Smaug in Mr. Jackson's over telling of Tolkien's excellent story, I imagine it would be high on the list with the state of today's technology. That being said, I have to agree with most here that Dragon Slayer's Vermithrax is the top dragon.

Not the dragons/my sanity
My dear George Raymond Richard Martin, I love your work so much, you cannot even imagine. I am reading the fifth book at the moment and can't get enough of it though I am very sad that it's coming to an end. I never thought about contacting you and honestly it just seemed a bit unrealistic, but then I found this page. Maybe you have some other way of getting in touch with your fans, but this one was the first I found. But anyways the point is that I wanted to ask you a question (If you will ever even read this): Did you ever happened to get shocked or at least surprised about the fan's choice of his/her favourite character? For example I don't really know if it is normal or common but I really liked the character of lord Tywin Lannister. I just found his personality very interesting just as his actions, decisions or interaction with other people. He is/was a fantastic character and I just wish you had written a bit more about him... Is this normal? Am I normal?! And if you could by any chance read this message I just wanted to say that you are a really amazing writer and from what i saw just as amazing person! Thank you again for writing these amazing books and looking forward for The Winds of Winter! Thank you once again. :) (And by the way I am terribly sorry for any spelling mistakes, I am not from a English speaking country)
-your dedicated fan David

I'm going to be that guy and point out you missed Ancalagon the Black, the dragon from the LotR Legendarium that crushed a mountain range when he died.

Ancalagon was the biggest dragon in Tolkien's work and Smaug the most famous, but for my money the scariest was Glaurung because he achieved his goals of destroying Nargothrond and ruining Turin's life, and died gleefully happily knowing he had done so.

Also a good-but-rare example of the wingless dragon in fantasy literature, which there should probably be more of. The drake-thing in THE NAME OF THE WIND is the only other one that immediately comes to mind.

Agreed, Glaurung is something else. Tolkien's dragons have intellect going for them, but Glaurung takes it to a whole new level.

Not sure if it's my physical similarity to Nettles but I would love to see what Sheepstealer would look like in the flesh, I also imagine Aegon IIs dragon was beautiful from its coloring.

I don't like choosing Drogon over these other dragons simply because it waters down the importance of Rhaegal and Viserion. I know HBO made Drogon the "main" dragon simply so they can save money on special effects but we all know three is an important number for Dany.

I am also a little disappointed that Smaug was turned from a traditional 4-legged dragon to a 2-legged one. Although he was amazing in the movie, it took away from the cohesiveness of the LOTR films that had drawings of a traditional Smaug. And that is also how the master, Tolkien wanted him to look.

Having said that, I believe Puff would kick everyone's arse if ever instigated. :)

Can't believe I didn't see the connection to Dragonslayer before! The female lead was "Valerian" Played by Caitlin Clarke (who sadly passed away in 2004.)

Drogon looks amazing! Can't wait for Season 4.
Will the dragons be mentioned by their names this season?

Feb. 12th, 2014 02:53 am (UTC)
Yes, yes, yes...
Coolest dragons ever indeed!
I want to say something about St. George, but, it's a bit off topic, him being history's most celebrated dragonSLAYER. It's an interesting aside perhaps.

My sweetheart's name is George too, as is our son. They come from a long line of Georges. I love Georges, what can I say...

Much gratitude for all you do George RR Martin <3

The Ice Dragon
George, don't forget about the coolest dragon (literally) which I think predates A Song of Ice and Fire - The Ice Dragon!!

I know it's not on film yet, but I think a CG film if done right can do the book justice.

(The book may be out of print but not the ebook.)

Please do an animated series about the conquest of Westeros.
Please do an animated series about the conquest of Westeros.

Just get the clone wars guys or a studio in Japan to do the series.

It would be cool to see the three dragons.

This is a cool idea. I second it if it's possible.

New Smaug rocks but VP was a champ
New Smaug is now the champ but VP was the old champ. It's amazing they did such a good job on her back in 1980. I have to give an honorable mention to the old anime Hobbit Smaug. I know animation is'nt part of this discussion but that character design and voice was so original, so out of the box.

Dragons in my head...
When I had seen Drogon in the Foreshadowing my heart really stopped!! And his roar!!!OMG. Everybody is questioning who will get the Iron Throne, but i ask myself: What is the gender of Dany's dragons? or Do they have a mating dance? I think i have serious problems up there.. :P Smaug is cool too.
