Farewell to the Iron Islands

Fans of fake history rejoice.  I am finally done with the Iron Islands.

And why does that make me so pleased?  Well, because it was the last little bit I had to write for our long-awaited and much-postponed concordance, THE WORLD OF ICE & FIRE.  Which we've been working on (along with many other things) lo, these many years.  ((And yes, yes, it's late, what else is new?  Please do not blame my faithful collaborators, Elio Garcia and Linda Antonsson.  They finished their part ages ago, and tossed the ball to me.  What can I say?  I remain as slow as ever.  And I added a lot.))

Anyway, it's done at last.  At least the writing part.  Now it is all in the hands of the artists, and our valiant editor Anne Groell.  (This will be a coffee table book, heavily and lavishly illustrated, so there's LOTS of art)).

World of Ice and Fire jkt - ElioLinda 1

Assuming we don't run into any problems with the art, THE WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE will be released this fall.  October, I think, but don't quote me on that.

And HEY, this means another monkey is off my back.  Only a couple left gibbering up there now.  That little joker monkey, HIGH STAKES.  And... gulp...

Being a fan of GRRM's works teaches you one precious trait, patience. Eagerly anticipating its release.

Congratulations on finishing the book....I was wondering if the house sigils depicted in any art in the book will be considered canon, from GRRM's perspective, or just a given artist's interpretation of such. Most folks maintain their own head-canon, I'd wager, but it's nice to know what George thinks too. :)

The World of Ice and Fire
Thank you for the brilliant world and saga so many worship. Just can't get enough. So, thanks to GRRM, Elio and Linda for extending our knowledge. Praying King Kong is sliding off your shoulders very soon!!

This is great news George, I love the cover for the book. I know however long it take to get done, it is going to be well worth the wait. Glad you decided to include the "Other Lands" section, I can see why you may have initially wanted to exclude them, keeping some of the places more mysterious. But I think overall fans will be happy to read about anything in the Ice and Fire world. I know I will be getting one as soon as they come out.

I love these sorts of detail works about my favorite fantasy fiction. Is there an 'Atlas of Westeros' around (or planned for)?

The map book has been around for some time.

Will it be authorative or from an in-world perspective?
I know that the history mentioned in the books comes from other characters and from the POV character's perspective, which means it could be false and/or misleading. It's one thing I love about the books, history as it was and is told is often inaccurate in the real world, and it only makes sense for that to be true in the world of ASOIAF. It leaves us guessing as much as the characters, which makes it even more engaging and compelling. Especially when myths and magic come into play...

My question is, will the history in this book follow that format or will it be definitively accurate and more akin to say, the appendices of Lord of the Rings?

In either case, I'm greatly looking forward to it. I preordered this on Amazon in May of last year and can't wait to get it!

Re: Will it be authorative or from an in-world perspective?
It's from the POV of a maester of the Citadel preparing a book on the history of Westeros and Essos for the edification of the newly-crowned King Robert, so it will be prone to POV errors and biases, not to mention occasional use of spilled ink when the narrative creeps into areas which are spoilerific (for either the books or Dunk 'n' Egg) :)

I hope the World Book is a month of solid reading.
And as for The Son of Kong. I've never seen the movie but I read that he was smaller and friendlier than King Kong. Could the same be said for TWoW? I hope the latter is true from a writing standpoint.

Will you excuse-me if…
Will you excuse-me if…

I do not share the general enthusiasm? Yes, I’ll buy it. Yes, I am sure it IS interesting, and I am interested, really. However, :( … I want to read the novels, not books about the world of the novels. You work on so many projects that yours readers have to wait a loooooooong time before reading the novels. And you know what? The novels are, for the majority of us, what is important in what you do professionally. The series is important, yes, the novels, more. This new book about the World of Ice and Fire is interesting. I’ll buy it when the last of the novels will be read. So I’ll not spoil any surprise for me, and it will be a mean to stay longer in your world, even after the word "end".

Awesome news! I just pre-ordered this yesterday, and am very much looking forward to reading it. :)

Any news on a "Dunk & Egg" anthology?
Mar. 10th, 2014 09:16 am (UTC)
The Dunk & Egg anthology has the working title of A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS. It's out now in Germany and a few other places, but the current, rough release date for the UK and USA is August 2015. I don't know why it's taking so long, but it's possible the publishers want to spread out their ASoIaF-related releases, so THE PRINCESS AND THE QUEEN last year, the world book this year and the omnibus next year. That's just a guess though.

Whether there is anything new in the book about Stark?
Mar. 9th, 2014 11:47 pm (UTC)
Great news! Always wonderful to hear that another piece of the puzzle is coming out.

But isn't it a tiny bit like putting the monkey before the cart to write the explanatory background book before "SoK" is finished and his friend has joined him?

At first when I read the title of the post I became afraid, and thought that the Iron Islands were like nuked or erased from the world or something... Turned out it's good news, can't wait to get it :)

Btw, the title of the German version is "Der Heckenritter von Westeros. Das Urteil der Sieben". Which translates as "The Hedge Knight of Westeros. The Judgement of the Seven".

Something to tide me over till Winds of Winter. Hoping for some insight on the Doom of Valyria, and possibly the story of the disappearance of Gerion Lannister.

It sounds like it only goes up to Robert's coronation, so it won't have anything on Gerion.

First I will have to buy a coffee table to put it on.

this is so great, but...
I adore you. Your writing, your style, your attitude; you are endlessly wonderful. I am so excited for this new book, and I am in love with the Maps of the world of ice and fire, which I own. However, NO more extras! Finish the series first, I beg you.

Love, Erika

The winged man
Hey mister Martin, i´m sorry my english is pretty bad, but i have to ask this...
i was wondering if the cities and places across the great sand sea like the bleeding sea, the cannibal sands, the cities of the bloodless men, the city of the winged men and all of those super "cool-named" cities will be shown in the books or in an anthology...
Cause i´m like... really looking forward to know the cities and the culture...
So i dunno if u will replay me but i hope so.

Re: The winged man
This tome is written by the maesters of the Citadel, who don't know very much about those legendary lands of the furthest east.

Name of the book
Hello Martin!!!

The book changed his name?
Because in Amazon is named Ice and Fire: The Untold History of the World of A Game of Thrones.

Thanks a lot for your work and waiting for TWoW!!!

Regards from Brazil.
