Something Old, Something New

Hiya kids, hiya hiya hiya.

With season 4 of HBO's GAME OF THRONES almost upon us, I thought the time was ripe for me to give my readers another taste of WINDS OF WINTER.  So I will shortly be posting a new sample chapter there.  (If you have not read the Arianne chapter that has been up there lo these many months, better do so soon, because Arianne will be coming down when the new sample goes up).

The new chapter is actually an old chapter.  But no, it's not one I've published or posted before, and I don't even think I've read it at a con (could be wrong there, I've done readings at so many cons, it all tends to blur together).  So it's new in that it is material that no one but my editors (well, and Parris, and David and Dan, and a few others) have ever seen before, but it's old in that it was written a long time ago, predating any of the samples that you have seen.  The first draft was, at any rate.  I've rewritten it a dozen times since then.

Anyway, I've blathered on about it long enough, I will let the text speak for itself.

Chapter title is "Mercy."

(And as with past samples, please don't talk about it here.  There are dozens of great places to talk about the books on the web, but this is not one of them.  If you want to talk about the chapter after you've read it, check out Westeros or Tower of the Hand or one of the many other great Ice & Fire sites).

Watch my website.  Coming soon.

Amazing chapter! I know it wasn't explicitly mentioned so it probably wasn't meant to be her, but I got the implication Arya was playing Sansa, or at least someone loosely based off her. You're breaking my heart! Thankyou :) (not for the heart-breaking).

George, I just finished reading it.

Congratulations. Your ability to continuously push the envelope in the scope of this story is unprecedented. Shakespearean, self-referential, dark, playful, tragic, climactic...it has it all. This is one of the most sadistically beautifully chapters you've written. I am completely disturbed and elated at the same time. The excitement this gives me for TWOW is incredible! Can't wait. Thank you, George!

It appears we have crashed the site in our hunger for more.

Website Down
I'm sure this is a bandwidth issue since there are probably thousands of people wishing to access the new chapter, but nevertheless, I have to inform GRRM that his website is down.

"She had dreamed of wolves again, of running through some dark pine forest with a great pack at her hells, hard on the scent of prey."

Found a typo, should be "heels" not hells.

Can I be one of your editors? I'm an expert with your writing, lol.

And there's an 'it' missing from 'you can keep in your breeches'.
Imagine being a proofreader for winds of winter... :D

Timeline error?
First of all, beautiful (and disturbing!) chapter! Thank you so much for that.

One question, if I may (and my apologies if this is not the right place to ask about this): (VERY SLIGHT spoilers)

The chapter obviously takes place after the epilogue of Dance, yet there's a mention of Cersei as if she's still acting as regent. Was that a relict from an older version of this chapter which would have taken place earlier in the timeline?

"Mercy passed an old man with a lantern walking the other way, and envied him his light."

Lots of web chatter today about this.
I'm excited but I have lots of catching up to do. I'm on the 2nd book and right now Asha is my favorite character. I love the way she was introduced. I appreciate everyone not posting spoilers since I'm so far behind. :)

I don't have words for how grateful I am. This is like waking up on Christmas morning without realizing before that it's Christmas :D Not in a million years I dared to wish for that POV. Everything I dreamed of and so much more. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Just Read Tyrion's Chapter
Loved it Loved it. Thank you! Mention Dragons and it pulls me in. Tyrion is my favorite character thus far. He is actually the one I think is most similar to your personality.
I'm Just wondering if you add a lot of your self into this character or do you associate yourself with another?
Anyways Thank you very much for the chapters. I'll be satisfied for another 6 months before I go wild with anticipation again :)

HELP! Where can I find the (old) Arianne chapter?
Maybe I missed this somewhere, but for those of us who had our head in the clouds these past 3 months and missed out on reading the Arianne chapter, is there any place where that text is still available? From what I can tell, the Adrianne chapter went down once the Mercy chapter went up - at least on GRRM's official site. But surely someone saved the a copy of the Adrianne chapter somewhere else online, yes? (fingers crossed) If you know where I can find it, hookabrotherup! Thnx!

Awesome Chapter
'Mercy" was awesome, can't wait for the rest!!

The picture and greeting from this post; in reference to Froggy from the Armageddon Rag? (which I also enjoyed greatly, must say!)

Re: Awesome Chapter
Yes, Froggy is mentioned in ARMAGEDDON RAG... but of course, he first gained stardom on ANDY'S GANG, the show that corrupted an entire generation.

Re: Awesome Chapter
To receive a reply from the great and powerful Gurm! My day is made!

Andy's Gang is a bit before my time, but Youtube still has some clips. Froggy (the prof) was my favorite sub-character in the Rag, just saying...

I've also read Fevre Dream, Dunk& Egg (all), Blacks & Greens, and of course all of aSoIaF (which I'm reading again btw), so needless to say I am a huge fan.

Any suggestions as to what to read next?

Here's hoping you say Winds of Winter!

Re: Awesome Chapter
If you're a fantasy fan, read the classics: Tolkien (of course), Frizt Leiber (Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser), Jack Vance (Dying Earth).

If you want more of my stuff, get DREAMSONGS, the retrospective collection of my short work.
