I Broke the Internet

Sorry about that.

The upload of the new sample chapter from THE WINDS OF WINTER created so much traffic to my website and blog that the servers crashed.  This is the first time I've been able to get up myself all day.

Anyway, it seems to be easing off some.  And we are looking at ways to increase capacity.

The "reviews" of the chapter have been amazingly enthusiastic as well.  Thanks.   I am pleased that so many of you -- thousands and maybe tens of thousands, it would seem -- enjoyed "Mercy" so much.

I mentioned that this chapter had quite a history.  It's true.  The first draft was written more than a decade ago.  Originally, it was intended to be the opening Arya chapter after the infamous "five year gap," her first appearance in A DANCE WITH DRAGONS as initially conceived.   Then it was supposed to be a part of A FEAST FOR CROWS, after I abandoned the five year gap and split the books.  Then it was going to be the concluding Arya chapter in A DANCE WITH DRAGONS.  But it seemed more like an opening chapter than a closing one, so shortly before ADWD was published my editor and I agreed to remove it from DANCE and shift it over into WINDS.  Of course, it has been revised, tightened, polished, and tweaked at every step of the way, so the version on my website has some significant differences from the "five year gap" version.

Some of you who enjoyed meeting Mercy may not have found the other sample we've put out there of late, a new Tyrion chapter.  That one is live and available with the ICE & FIRE app, and can be found at

Well i can say that this surprised tremendously,i expected something like that comming at for Sansa considering she's been walking with LittleFinger, amazing chapter it's pretty shocking how fast Arya's been developing

Thanks so much.
A truly spectacular chapter. You once again masterfully challenge us to step back and evaluate what a beloved character is doing. It will be interesting to sit back and watch the controversy erupt as readers freak out about Arya's new situation.

Again, deepest thanks for this and for all of the hard work you do.

You're a fucking genius, you know that? (well of course you do). Not only for teaching Raff how to properly say his lines with Mercy (no pun intended) but for feeding us with this piece of mastery at the right time (say, just in time for me not to kill myself out of despair for WOW). Now in a more "serious tone". I'm a fan of very few things. Fan of fewer persons, and you... you are on my list (not in an "Arya's list" sort of way, mind you). May the force (and the inspiration) always be with you, George R.R. Lannist--- Martin! Whoops! :P

I'm so tempted to read this, but part of me wants to wait until the book is completed so I can get the "full experience." Either way, thank you for sharing pieces of your work!

How do you decide which chapters to share and which to hold on to until publication? Do you ever worry about revealing too much too soon?
Mar. 28th, 2014 02:00 am (UTC)
Yes. I worry about that all the time.

And I think I may be at the limit with WINDS.

Though I do intend to offer you all a little taste from THE WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE soon.

Thank you, George!
Thank you, George for the Mercy/Arya chapter. I really enjoyed it!

use google cache
Thanks! Few people were expecting an Arya chapter. Nice surprise.

Lets see if you can break Amazon´s Website when Winds of Winter come out =]

By the way, for people that are still having issues with GRRM´s site: use google cache

just google for the website, and choose 'cached version' on the small menu besides/below the address on the result list

Enjoyed the one with the app update as well as the newest one you uploaded to your site. Looking forward to the finished product. Hope it gets better and better for you!

I was suspicious of "Mercy" from the start and I'm glad my suspicions were well-founded. What a good twist and I'm so glad she finally got Raff the Sweetling!

Arya and the Jets
George I love your work. Thank you for being the most accessible author of all time. Now how about them Jets? Can Geno really be the guy?

Is the blade that Arya stabs through Raff's neck Needle? For some reason people are debating this and I thought it was clearly described as Needle. Since it's not really a spoiler, and more of a clarification, I figured I would just try to ask the man himself.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Not just for the chapter, which left me shaking, but the whole series. Your work made me realize that there was hope for fantasy yet.

I'm curious; did removing the five year gap change your way of telling Arya's story in Winds a lot, or did you manage to salvage most of it?

Loved the chapter, I can't wait until the book comes out. I've been following the series since it first came out. Can't wait!!

Winter has cometh
Too good. Too good. I can't. Wait. Oh but I must.

This chapter has essentially driven ASoIaF fans bananas. I expect that when you release the sixth book, it will probably cause social media to crash.

Kill Bill Influence?
Thank You George, for breaking the Internets in the best way possible!

Is Arya's storyline influenced by Kill Bill at all? I had already dug the female assassin in training vibe, but was blown away by Mercy's similarity to O-Ren Ishii, Lucy Liu's character. Love lovelove it, and thank you again for sharing.

Thank you!
Just can't wait to read Winds! I really enjoy all about song of ice and fire, and hopefully Arya and Tyron (my favourite, please don't you dare to kill them jk hahaha) bring us big surprises.
Thank you for this great story!

In case it is helpful, if I were faced with the 'server too busy, fell over' thing, I'd go straight to Rackspace Cloud. It's really good for that sort of web traffic with sudden huge spikes to it. Not cheap, but totally worth it. (This is going to sound like an utterly spammy ad, but honestly, I have no financial stake in Rackspace, I just wish I could convince all my website development customers to pay enough to host everything with them, it would make my life a happier place).

Have to admit I'm less enamoured of your current host 1&1: my experiences with them have been at the 'mixed to unhappy' end of the spectrum.

just throwing that in there for the benefit of whatever techy is currently heaving a huge sigh of relief that the damn thing has come back up again now.

Hey there George how is it going?
Mar. 28th, 2014 12:32 pm (UTC)
I feel like a kid who's been waiting for Christmas for years. ;-) I'm really excited about The World of Ice and Fire as well. =D Your books make me want to explore that world from The Lands of Always Winter to the remotest corners of Ulthos. Though I'd probably catch some disease in Sothoryos and die a horrible death before I got anywhere near Ulthos. Oh well... =D

Releasing too many sample chapters too early?
Arya is probably my favorite Stark, nice to get some insight into where her character is going. You say that you reached your limit for sample chapters with WINDS, but also say that you are not in the final draft stage. Is it possible that you may have shown too much of WINDS too early, and that you should have sent out samples in their absolute final form later in 2014, given that the book's likely release is 1-2 years away? Seems like ending the release of sample chapters this early will result in less of a splash once the book is released so many months or years from now.

Re: Releasing too many sample chapters too early?
GRRM used to say that AFFC was beyond the limit: by the time the book came out, ten chapters had been shared in their final form (and more read out at conventions etc), which was a quarter of the novel in terms of chapter-count. ADWD was actually less (six or seven, IIRC, or less than a tenth of the novel), and TWoW is less again (so far). If we assume TWoW is going to be as long as ASoS/ADWD in terms of chapters (70+), the sample chapters released so far are fairly modest.

IIRC, one Dany chapter that didn't appear in a book until 2011 was previewed as early as 2002 or 2003, and that didn't hurt ADWD too much.
