Season Four...

... is almost at hand.

Tonight's the night.  Did I mention that?  Oh... I did...

"Two Swords."  Episode one of season four, written and directed by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.  It's a helluva season episode.  I've seen it three times now, at various premieres, but I'm looking forward to seeing it a fourth time this evening.

And next week, "The Lion and the Rose," the episode I scripted myself.  I haven't seen that one at all, but various folks I trust tell me it came at well, so I'm looking forward to seeing it for myself.

Anyone doing anything special in the way of premiere parties?  We're partied out ourselves, after the New York, Brooklyn, and Santa Fe premieres, so we're staying home, gathering round the tube, and laying in some ribs and pulled pork and brisket from Whole Hog.

My friends and I plan to get together and watch it in costume. I'll be in my Tyrell dress and cloak, one friend has her Targaryen dress, another a Blackfyre costume. There may well be some thematically appropriate snacks as well.

I can't wait to see it. I noticed Metacritic has given the first 3 episodes a 94 rating, a unreal score, which I only hope goes up.

With the show and the books, do you look feedback from both professional critics and fans, or just the fans? I've always wondered whether authors/producers took the feedback of professional critics seriously, or if they just stuck with feedback from other authors/the fans.

You know, feedback is great... whether from fans or critics or other writers... but I learned early on not to take any of it too seriously. Writers are entertainers, and like most entertainers we crave applause (some writers will deny this, but don't believe them for a minute). But you should never start to believe your own press. Rave reviews can make you feel great, and negative reviews can bring you down, and the same is true for emails, fan letters, amazon comments, whatever... but in the end, all that matters is the work. And when the work is being done, you should not be thinking about your fanmail or the critics... just about the characters, the scene, the sentence.

Different Writing Styles
Hi Mr. Martin,

Huge fan and fellow Jersey-boy, here. I was wondering how writing for TV differs than writing a book. Do you have to keep budgets, locations, costumes, etc. in mind or do you just write freely and make edits if necessary? Thanks!

Re: Different Writing Styles
I did most of my TV writing from 1985 to 1995, and did worry about all those things. On GAME OF THRONES, it's Dan Weiss and David Benioff who have those concerns, not me. (Thank the gods).

Oh my God! I'm so excited to see it. I can't watch first episode today but tomorrow I'll! As always I'll watch it with my boyfriend while sitting on the bed and eating some spicy snacks. And second episode will be more exciting, because I know you wrote it and you didn't see it!
Sorry for my English but I'm form Poland and I'm not really good at it!

In ASOIAF fashion, we're preparing a large feast with a lot of Steak and a lot of potatoes, as well some brownies and ice cream for dessert. We've also got some of the fine Ommegang beer, both a bottle of Fire and Blood Ale and Take the Black Stout, to wash all of it down.

Though I went to the Premiere in Brooklyn, I can't wait to see this episode again tonight. My Mom couldn't go with me to the premiere so it's her first time, and I can't wait.

Season 4
My wife and I are very excited for Season 4 yet remain one of the benighted souls without HBO. In actuality we have no TV in the house at all (though we do netflix for the kiddos).

So until I take the time to figure out how to get just GoT we will wait for the mass release.

Enjoy your time off and the fruits of your labor. The ribs sound good. I've never eaten at Whole Hog, though there is one just a few miles away here in ABQ. I keep meaning to stop in.

Usually I make cheese & onion pie from A Feast of Ice & Fire for dinner on Episode 1 Night - it's my favorite of the dishes therein, at least in part because it's one of the dishes I chose to pack in the basket I brought you at one of your ADWD signings back a few years ago! But this year my guy and I are making a seasoned pork pie, mashed potatoes, pearl onions in gravy, and a nice salad for dinner. But it'll just be the two of us, no big parties.

No parties here unfortunately since I'm under the weather but I'm really excited for the premiere, the entire season actually. I need that universal remote from Click so I can fast forward my life for a couple of hours.

Seven HELLS, I am absolutely STOKED! Hosting a Premier party and Feast at my place, complete with Old Bears Hot Spiced Wine, Blandissory, Honeyed Chicken, Honey Cakes, and the oh so customary Bread and Salt (for protection, of course). Doing a marathon re-watch of Season 3 now, and we plan to toast to Robb and Catelyn after Episode 9. Certainly NOT looking forward to seeing the Red Wedding again (shakes fist at you).

All three seasons and five books have been absolutely thrilling so far. Kudos good Ser. Carry on, and may the Gods be with you :)

Seasoning 4
I'm sure the title speaks to one of the saddest occurrences of the books. I'm not sure why but the death of that one inanimate object had a bigger emotional impact on me than most character deaths.

The pulled pork sounds great. We've been marinating steaks for the grill, oysters for the BBQ, and a fresh strawberry spinach salad, and a strawberry glaze pie. I'm feeling a little Abner Marsh'ish just reciting the menu. Here's to a great premier George!

season 4
Season 4 and feedback - Mr. Martin, season four sounds great! I already read the books, but it still will be great to watch. You are right about feedback. In the little writing experience I have, feedback is greatly valued. I sent you a fan letter earlier in March, and after I sent it I finished dream songs 1 and I started 2. The Tuf stories are amazing, and Sandkings was one of the best short stories that I have read. I just wanted to say that, because it was not included in the letter. Also, I forgot to include a reply letter in my fan mail, and I am sorry about that! Fevre River told me that they could supply postage, so that is a relief. Anyway, you are my favorite author, and I am very excited to continue reading your works! - Caleb Spall

Just ordered some Chinese and we're settling in to get ready! It's the first season I'll watch along with my boyfriend, and having read the books myself while he hasn't, I'm so excited to see how he reacts to all the new interesting twists and turns this season! I know there's some good ones coming that'll knock his socks off! Thanks George :D
