See You in Carolina

Tomorrow morning my executive minion Raya and I will be off again, this time to ConCarolinas in Charlotte.

If you're in the neighborhood, swing by the Charlotte Hilton and join the fun.  Parties, panels, autographing, speeches... did I mention the parties?  Sometime in there I hope to find some good barbeque.

And I'll be doing a reading.  This time, I think, a selection from the forthcominh WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE, for all you fake history fans.

Have a great time in uptown Charlotte - the Queen City! I live about an hour north - would love to take you to Randy's BBQ in Troutman or Lancasters in Mooresville if you fancy a short drive. I can't make the ConCarolinas, sadly.
May. 29th, 2014 10:46 pm (UTC)
Lancasters is the place I referred to in my post. By far the best BBQ in the area!
May. 28th, 2014 10:29 pm (UTC)
If only I'd known about this sooner! You'll be able to find good BBQ there! Just make sure it's vinegar based! I grew up just north of Charlotte, and my hometown has an awesome BBQ spot. I miss it :)
May. 30th, 2014 01:12 am (UTC)
I'm with you on being sure it is vinegar based! Wouldn't it be great to get George to have a fan meet and greet at Lancasters!??

I'll do my darnedest to get out to ConCarolinas this weekend and bring some eastern style 'cue from Allen & Son, the magical roadside barbecue restaurant near my house. If you have to resort to the local fare, Bill Spoon's or Bubba's are the best. Skip the chicken and go straight for the eastern style pulled pork, or chopped pork if they have it.

Enjoy George! I know you had a bit of a 'stretch' between appearances listed on your site. Enjoy the Con, and good travels!
May. 29th, 2014 02:10 am (UTC)
Goodness! I had no idea that you were going to be there. That might be the final incentive I needed to get me to drive four hours to check that Con out.

Coming to the UK
Hi George,
Will you be coming to the U.K for any speeches/book signings?
May. 29th, 2014 03:27 pm (UTC)
Re: Coming to the UK
Yes, coming to the Edinburgh Book Festival and to worldcon in London, both in August.

Would that I could afford a pass. Enjoy NC George!

Li wish there was some events in Ireland so I could get more info and readings out of you!!
May. 29th, 2014 03:28 pm (UTC)
There's Shamrockcon in Dublin in August. I might be there. Or might not. Depends on the Emmys.

Setting out for the Con on Friday.

Running a miniature game base on Ice And Fire Saturday morning with lots of toy soldiers battling for the Iron Throne.

We didn't make the final list for the banquet though...sorry to miss it.

Look forward to some more fake history (good for new game ideas...)

See you there!
Hey George! I will be there on Saturday with my good friend Lidia, dressed up as the rag tag duo of Joffrey and Cersei! Can't wait, it's going to be a blast! Safe travels, see you there!

Enjoy it! I wish I could be there!
I know how much you love these events. Personally I never attended any of these Cons. Unfortunately I can't at the moment, but hopefully I'll be able to attend one when you start reading from "A Dream of Spring." A long way to go...but i'll have patience.

I just swung by Boardwalk Billy's Raw Bar & Ribs across from the Hotel. I believe I ate four kinds of Meat.

Do you think you might drop in on Florida in the next year or two?

Come to the exceedingly warm side. We have beaches. And I guess I can make cookies too.

It was a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for signing my balls! :-)

Send me a raven if you ever come to Charleston. I would love to buy you some ales.

Best regards,

Con Carolinas
I really enjoyed the Wild Cards panel and I am very interested in starting that series. I only wished the autograph sessions were handled with more care. I was turned away from both sessions and honestly it was my entire reason for coming to Con Carolina. Unfortunately, I left with my heart broke and wallet much lighter than before. I did have a good moment though, without knowing your assistant Raya, I asked if I could help her with her groceries that she was dropping all over the elevator floor. She politely declined my help, but it wasn't until later that I knew why she declined. When you walked into the Opening ceremonies and she came walking in behind you, I knew then why she declined my help, she thought I just wanted to see the great and powerful George R. R. Martin. Well , hopefully I will get to have something signed when you visit Joesph-Beth Booksellers in Lexington, KY for you future book signings.

Re: Con Carolinas
There were days when I could sign for as many people as wanted signatures... as many books as they wanted... with personal inscriptions on each. Those days, alas, are gone.

These days I do two books for each customer, straight signatures, no personalizations... and I still get lines that wear me out. I did two autograph sessions, each of ninety minutes. You HAVE to cap the lines at some point, or I'd be sitting and signing all day.

I thought I'd taken care of everyone, but it appears not. Sorry.

Re: Con Carolinas
I don't mind having the lines capped, I can totally understand that if they were not, the lines would stretch on forever. The way the lines were formed was very unfair and unorganized. It was great getting to see you and hear you talk on matters other than A Song of Ice and Fire. And , Ser, you do not have to apologize.

Had a blast!
Just wanted to say thanks for coming to Charlotte! It was great getting a chance to meet you @ the banquet and the readings there & on the second Saturday panel were great.

It was truly an experience that I will remember for a long, long time.

The fact that your parting words were "Don't $%#@ with Tywin Lannister!" - I will be quoting that for the remainder of my days :)

Con Carolinas
My first Con was quite awesome. The Wild Cards panel was fabulous...I had no idea that GRRM was so funny!
I was able to meet GRRM during the Con, and I must say, he was one of the nicest, most humble people that I've ever met...especially considering the fact that we were bossy librarians who walked up to him, yet he didn't seem the least bit bothered and was so kind to us as we acted like tween fangirls.
Thanks so much, Mr. Martin; you truly made our experience! And when my students and fellow educators found out who I met, face-to-face, they were so excited!

Thanks for coming to Charlotte! The con was awesome! Particularly enjoyed the World of Ice and Fire reading! Don't fuck with Tywin Lannister haha! It was awesome getting to meet you.
That weekend just furthered my excitement for the upcoming books!
