Coming to the Cocteau

We have a wild week of movies coming to the Jean Cocteau Cinema this weekend.  Something old, something new, something sick and twisted and depraved, and Shakespeare.

From the Bard and the Royal Shakespeare Company, we have HENRY IV, Part 1.  Prince Hal, Falstaff, great stuff.

Something new is THE DOUBLE, with Jesse Eisenberg:

Something old, the Jane Fonda/ Lee Marvin western comedy classic, CAT BALLOU.  A personal favorite.  Lee Marvin won his Oscar as Best Actor for his double role in the film, and Jane has seldom been lovelier (well, okay, maybe as Barbarella).  Stubby Kaye and Nat King Cole are on hand as well.  Rather than the trailer, here's a look at the scene where Lee Marvin arrives in town:

Our midnight movie (midnight begins at 11pm in Santa Fe) is John Water's notorious PINK FLAMINGOs.  With Divine.  (Not to be confused with Andy Devine).  And no, we will NOT offer special chocolate cupcakes for this one.  Or even pink flamingo cupcakes.

See you at the movies.

Cat Balllou
She's mean and evil through and through. I loved this movie, you have great taste.

I am crazy about Richard Ayoade, the director of 'The Double'. He is an alien, I think. I can't imagine how his brain works.

Cat Ballou
"Cat Ballou" was a favorite movie of mine growing up, along with my dad. We watch it whenever it's on, and it still makes us laugh - Kid Shelleen drunk on his drunk horse!

You should see about getting The Naked Prey. Cornel Wilde, being chased across Africa. Good stuff.

Cat Ballou!
Hats off for that choice! Love that film. First time I saw it I was 12 I think? Jane Fonda already looked dragonfire-hot to me at the time, so...

Now I have to restrain myself from whistling the ballad in the office, but all is good. :)

"Then there came to town
A gun deadly and frightening
A gun quicker than lightning
Fastest gun you've seen
It was the gun in the hand of
Steel-Eyed Kid Shelleen

Just one look at him
Had folks starting to booger
Wild, wild as a cougar
Proud and fierce and mean
There was no man who was tougher
Tough as Kid Shelleen"

Color me thoroughly envious of the RSC Henriad stuff, and awash with nostalgia at the thought of Cat Ballou. And Pink Flamingos! What a diverse output!

...anyway, I hope you'll forgive me dropping in out of the blue, but I thought that perhaps nobody had yet shared with you this example of how one of your readers recently discovered that 21st century technology can on occasion play merry hell with one's engagement with the text; they were waxing wistful at not being able to share the experience with you, since they thought it might tickle you.

The Double
The Double seems promising..I wish it will come to my country soon!

Prince Hal
Not sure what version of Henry IV you plan to show.

I really like the latest version with Tom Hiddleson (Loki) as Prince Hal, directed by Sam Rami. (The old BBC TV version with Robert Hardy [of Harry Potter and historian of longbows fame] is also good fun.)

(Hiddleson/Rami also did a very good verion of Henry V but it has to compete with Ser Lawrence and Ser Kenneth's versions - who directed Hiddleson in Thor.)

If only the BBC would provide the same armorer for Game of Thrones as it did for these films...

Often see a few touches from the Henry IV (1 & 2) and Henry V cycle in The Song of Ice and Fire...

Coming into town in July and hope to catch a show at the Cocteau. Love Shakespeare and wish I was going to be there to see Henry IV. Just saw Henry V at Chicago Shakespeare Theater and it was tremendous.

No way to go to Sta Fe..
..so I'll have to brag about taking the kids (Erik, Little Freddie and Princess Gracie) to the animated movie "How to Train Your Dragon 2." Happy to say, "I'm probably the most animated adult around!"

Hello George! :)

So not fair
Not fair I don't have enough money to fly out there 3-4 times a year and stay a week or two to catch the offerings at your theatre.

A message from Chinese fans
Mr. Martin

This is a letter from your Chinese fans and very glad to mail to you.
A Song of Ice and Fire is a great novel or a fantastic world for us.We noticed that you just give two opportunities to whoever donate 20,000 Dollars to Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary and The Food Depot of Santa Fe. But unluckily we knew the news too late, so we can not take part in because we think it will be very cool that if a character named by us can appear in your novel.
So we think if you could give another opportunity to us to have a character appeared in your novel and named by your Chinese fans.We will crowd funding the money and vote for the name and we will be very proud of seeing the name appeared in A Song of Ice and Fire. And it will be even cooler if we can donate it to a Chinese charity group you want because we think A Song of Ice and Fire is also belongs to the world including China.
here is my email address: wayyy_cn@sina.com
Very glad to write to you and hope for your reply!

Best Regards,
A Chinese fan of you

Some first-rate kickass movies in the pipe, George.

Me and the ladiez just got back from a crosscountry con marthon and I'm wiped. We met so many awesome people and a lot of indy comic lifers are quite aware of the great things going down at the Cocteau. Mark my words, your theater is going to be a household name among the true fannish.

Speaking of said awesome dudes, we got the chance to hang out with these guys after they performed. They also do a groundbreaking comedy routine on con life and Aspergers syndrome. Maybe one day we could see them at the Cocteau...
