Wild Cards in Germany

Our German publishers will soon be releasing their translation of INSIDE STRAIGHT, first of the "next generation" of Wild Cards books, and they've released a cool "book trailer" to herald the event,

Enjoy!

Oh that's great! I will look out for it in August. This book trailer thing is something I just discovered recently. It still confuses me somehow^^

We're missing out!
I love that ad. Why don't we advertise books that way here?

Original
Are this the same publishers as for the song of ice and fire series? If this is the case, i would strongly recommend to read it in English since the translation of the song of ice and fire series is terrible. There are translations of the names like Jon Snow into the german word "Jon Schnee" and some mistakes in translating words with two or more meanings. The trailer, however, is a very appealing idea:)

Re: Original
It is indeed the same publishing house, but another translator (see beneath). The first German version, the one without the translation of proper names, was also published by Blanvalet though. So I think this doesn't imply a poor translation.
Besides, not all those Germanisations are terrible, 'Graufreud' sounds quite ok I think (although I also read the English series and therefore prefer it). Instead of Tolkien's Shire the German Auenland sounds very fitting, since we're used to it :)

And I had the honour and pleasure of translating this book! I love the characters and I love how they look in this ad! Let's hope that the German readers love them at least half as much as I do!

So, is this book the best way so start with the Wild Card series or should I read the original series first?

If you can read the first book, it's best to start there. The first three books, if possible.

But INSIDE STRAIGHT was written with new readers in mind, and starts with a little bit of set-up so you're not starting cold. You'll be fine if you start with it.

Awesome
I love this ad!

I guess we will have nothing in France when the first book will be released next September.

On this, I go back to Turn of the Cards.

Cool! Been reading your other novels, but looking forward to starting this series. Off-topic a bit, any news on the Mystery Knight Comics? Love Hedge Knight and Sworn Sword!

That looks suitably cool!

Y'know, though: sometimes it's easy to forget that at your heart you're as much as fan of speculative fiction as the rest of us. To see your mood as "bouncy" really made me smile.

And thanks for all the great stories, George! I love every word!

Yours,
Sylvan (Dave)

Born To Be Wild Cards!
Hi George. I heard that inspiration to write Wild Cards originated in a roleplaying game (playing with Gurps). Is this true? Please tell us this story...
Thanks!

Re: Born To Be Wild Cards!
Yes. The story has been told many times. Check out my afterwords for the old iBooks reissues. I believe the current Orion editions reprinted those, fwiw.
