Banned In Turkey

It appears that GAME OF THRONES has been corrupting the morals of the Turkish military:

Who knew?

Can't really understand that. I mean, what does the reader of GoT learn? Things like "Love your children, prepare them for the future life", "Keep your promises", "Control your urges", "Know your goals". Nothing wrong with that, I always thought :D

Good Old-Fashioned Censorship
I think you should be offended that they're banning the show but not the books. It's disrespectful to the source material.

No surprises there. Turkey has been turning more towards Islam.

censority
I'm so ashamed of my country and it's "protective" decisions. As a reader of ASOIAF and watcher of GOT, I think this perfect work of art must not be banned or cencored in anyway.

It's the kind of thing that happens in any theocracy, and what better way to enforce a religious edict than force of arms?

Turkey's military
My understanding is that, for the last hundred years or so, Turkey's military leadership has been sort of a secular counterweight to its civilian leaders. As vg36 notes, this has been changing recently, and the country is being pulled more and more toward Islam. They're a NATO country, and they desperately want to be part of the EU (which will probably never happen), so that's pulling them in the opposite direction. And ISIS is fighting against the Kurds just across their southeastern border. The Kurds want their own state, which the Turkish government opposes. That's a lot for one country to deal with.

Re: Turkey's military
+1
Since the beginning of "modern" Turkey, almost a hundred years ago, the military has been a guardian of secularity; proto-Islamists were restrained by military coup if they got too carried away. Obviously, amid the turmoil of the last generation, this has given way somewhat, but the tradition did not serve Turkey badly.

Considering the backstabbing [literal], violence and decadence of the Turkish Caliphate before it finally imploded, some of GOT would be close to history...

some wives sensor game of thrones also
USed to work with a guy who was a big SFF fan. Gave him a copy of Scalzi's Old Mans War when he had prostrate surgery (seemed appropriate). He borrowed a DVDs for game of throne season 1 from someone at work. His wife came home and yelled at him and told him to turn that trash off.

told him to get the book, but he is afraid his wife will take it away from him. He has been married for 35 years... guy is a totally beaten down shell of himself.

The harsher the Turkish government seeks to restrict GoT, the more eagerly it will be watched in secret, undermining the authorities in the process.
