I've done a new podcast, for the website of the 2008 World Fantasy Convention in Calgary. It can be found at

http://worldfantasy2008.libsyn.com/

for those who are interested.

Elsewise? Writing. Gaming. Editing.

Oh, and we have a new kitten, an orange Maine Coon Cat, female. So far she's the Kitten Without a Name, but we'll come up with one soon, I'm sure. She's a great hit with me and Parris, but Caligula is less than pleased at the presence of another cat in the house, and he hisses and spits whenever he sees her. So

Aw. Kittens! Wish we could have them over the house. Much luck with the new addition in the family, and I hope the kittens gets along eventually with Caligula.

Gah. You can't talk about kittens and not post pics! Especially an orange kitten. I have a huge soft spot for orange cats, which is why I have possession of a feisty little orange rescue named Floribunda.

Mz. Thang is gorgeous, and Caligula will fall to her wiles (read: ginormous fluffy tail) soon enough.

Good luck with the new kitten! I'm glad I'm not the only one who names a pet "Caligula"! I once had a Doberman named Caligula--she was a female and the sweetest dog you could ever hope to meet.

If Caligula dislikes the kitten, then obviously her name is Agrippina.

A Maine Coon? Those you address as "Your Majesty" and "Ma'am".

Name her Drusilla, that should soften up Caligula. :)

She's truly a cutie
I've seen her on Parris' LJ. I agree with Drusilla or Agrippina.... though that will shorten to pet names soon enough.

We tend to give more attention to the cute little kitten, so make a point of giving as much or more attention to Caligula when she is around. He will see that she wont take his place in the house and he should soften...

The only thing you have to watch out for is his stress level, cats cant handle stress very well.

Good Luck with the new lady in the house!

Orange cats are the best.
What color eyes does she have? My Tiger has some wicked yellow ones.

I loooove Maine Coons - we've had several in the family, one mix and two purebreds. There's nothing quite like 18-24 pounds of fluffy love landing on your lower intestines at 3am, nor the extermination of all mammalian and bird life in your yard.

I also have an orange (or a Red and Silver to be technical), Maine Coon. He's the gorgeous beast in my user picture. MC's are fantastic cats, good luck with her!

Congrats on the new family member. My newest, Stingo, is nearly 1.5 and is just *now* learning how to play with the dog ('cause the old man won't have any of his kitten crap), 'tho he finally stopped hissing at her a few months ago.

Interesting podcast! Thanks for posting the link.

Congrats on the new baby. I hope Caligula adjusts to his new house mate quickly.

would it be too nerdy to name the new cat Chaerea, or even Cassius Chaerea (the guy who killed Caligula)? Or possibly after Caligula's successor, Claudius, though I'll grant that's not nearly as cool a name as Chaerea.

red cuteness
(see my user pic) yes, she is the most beautiful girl cat in the ever expanding universe. Wish I had had the foresight to take a picture of her half brother, Jesse. He was winning every ribbon he was eligible for, and deserved them. Not quite two years old, and he was truly ginormous. She got the oversized fluffy paws, lynx tips of a classic Maine Coon.

Having a new kitten for the first time in 12 years? Absolutely delightful.

naming the kitten
I appreciate all the suggestions, many of them very cool, but Parris insists that this time it's her turn to name the cat, since I named Augustus (Gus) and Caligula (Boots). I've suggested Drusilla, Agrippina, Livia Augusta, Valeria Messalina, and other great choices, and she has vetoed them all.

And Claw-Claw-Claudius is the name for a mail cat, of course. But we need to get a Tiberius in there first. Our friends John and Gail already have a Nero, though they insist he's named after the detective, not the emperor.

Next time, we need a Savannah cat named Hannibal.
